Öğe The effect of pessimism on mental health and tendency to physical violence: The mediating role of psychological strain(Elsevier, 2025) Yücekaya, Mehmet Akif; Uğraş, Sinan; Sagin, Ahmet Enes; Mergan, Barış; Temel, Cenk; Aslan, MuratThis study examines the relationships between psychological strain, mental health, pessimism, and physical violence tendencies in athletes. The sample for the study consists of a total of 600 athletes, including 362 women and 238 men who participate in team sports in the university league. Structural equation modelling was used to test the hypotheses. The findings indicate a negative and significant relationship between pessimism and athletes' mental health, while no direct significant relationship was observed with physical violence tendencies. Furthermore, it has been determined that psychological strain acts as a mediating variable in the relationships between pessimism, athletes' mental health, and physical violence tendencies. These findings point to the importance of psychological support and stress management interventions aimed at protecting athletes' mental health and reducing their physical violence tendencies. The research offers important implications for future studies and applications in the field of sports psychology.Öğe Effects of 8-week Tabata training on cardiopulmonary and performance parameters in wheelchair basketball players: A controlled study(Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2025) Sanal, Alperen; Özen, GökmenBackground: Wheelchair basketball (WB) is a physically demanding sport requiring the development of various physiological and performance-related parameters. High-intensity interval training methods, such as Tabata, are increasingly used to enhance athletic performance. However, their specific effects on WB players remain underexplored. Methods: This study aimed to investigate the physiological effects of an 8-week Tabata training program on WB players. Fifteen male WB athletes over the age of 18 were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 8) or a control group (n = 7). The experimental group performed Tabata training twice weekly following their regular WB sessions. Each session consisted of 1 set of 8 repetitions, including 20 seconds of activity and 10 seconds of rest. The control group continued their standard training regimen. Pre- and posttest evaluations included physiological parameters such as respiratory function (FEV1, forced vital capacity [FVC], maximum voluntary ventilation), heart rate (resting and maximal), blood lactate, oximetry, body composition, and sprint performance. Results: Statistically significant differences were observed between the groups in maximal heart rate, FEV1 %, FEV1/VC, FEV1/VC %, MVV %, maximal blood lactate, body weight, and 20 m sprint performance (P < .05). No significant differences were found in resting heart rate, resting and maximal oximetry, FVC, FVC %, FEV1, FEV1/FVC, FEV1/FVC %, RAST (minimum, maximum, average power), or anaerobic power (P > .05). Conclusion: The findings indicate that Tabata training positively affects maximal heart rate, respiratory function, lactate response, body weight, and sprint performance in WB players. The program appears to enhance lactate tolerance and maximal ventilatory capacity, potentially improving oxygen intake during high-intensity efforts. These results suggest that Tabata training can be a valuable addition to the training routines of WB athletes.Öğe Association between pediatric obesity and foot morphology: insights from a large-scale cross-sectional study using photogrammetry(Bmc, 2025) Büyükçelebi, Hakan; Acak, Mahmut; Eken, Özgür; Doğaner, Adem; Özen, Gökmen; Ardigo, Luca PaoloBackground Childhood obesity is a critical public health concern with implications for musculoskeletal development. Foot posture abnormalities—particularly pes planus—may be associated with obesity and could serve as early diagnostic indicators. Aim This study investigated the relationship between foot posture and obesity in children aged 4–14 years using non-invasive assessment methods. Materials and methods A total of 7,908 children (mean age: 8.7 ± 2.9 years; 51.2% male) were assessed using photogrammetry and the Staheli Arch Index, along with the Jack Test to classify foot posture. BMI categories and foot posture types were statistically compared. Results Rigid pes planus was found in 9.6% of children, flexible pes planus in 7.8%, and high arch in 3.8%. Among overweight and obese children, the prevalence of rigid pes planus was significantly higher (p < 0.001). Logistic regression revealed that rigid pes planus increased the risk of obesity by 7.2 times (OR = 7.156; 95% CI: 5.179–9.887). Conclusion Rigid pes planus is strongly associated with obesity in children. Foot posture screening, especially in early childhood, may serve as a valuable tool for identifying children at risk for obesity-related complications and guiding early preventive interventions.Öğe Effectiveness of virtual reality games on the specific sport skills of adolescents(Bmc, 2025) Günar, Bilgetekin Burak; Bavlı, ÖzhanBackground The aim of this study was to examine the basketball-specific skills of young individuals and the acute effects of virtual reality (VR) games. Methods Seventeen high school students aged between 14 and 16 years (mean 15.3 ± 0.85 years) who had not received prior basketball training and VR experiments volunteered for the study. The participants were divided into two groups: the VR group (VRG) and the court group (CG). Both groups engaged in 45-min basketball court training sessions twice a week for eight weeks, whereas the VRG additionally received 15-min sessions of VR basketball exercises twice a week. Before and after the 8-week intervention period, dribbling, slaloming, free throw, and stop shot tests and VR experiment surveys were administered. Results The results revealed no significant difference in within-group pretest-to-posttest comparisons for the CG, whereas the VRG exhibited a significant improvement in repeated measurements of dribbling, slalom, and stop shot tests (p < 0.05). In the between-group repeated measurement difference scores, a significant advantage for the VRG was observed in the stop shoot test (p < 0.05). Conclusion In conclusion, the VR exercises conducted in addition to the 8-week on-court training were found to be effective in improving dribbling, slaloming, and stopping shot skills in basketball. Furthermore, although the VR experience questionnaire revealed that VR games are close to reality, it revealed that there is a need for improvement.Öğe Positive attitudes toward physical activity and eating disorders in university students: the moderating role of gender(Bmc, 2025) Ugraş, Sinan; Mergan, Barış; Yücekaya, Mehmet Akif; Sagın, Ahmet Enes; Ateş, Fatih; Aykora, EmrahBackground Eating disorders affect both male and female populations worldwide. Previous studies suggest that attitudes toward physical activity may play a key role in their development. Understanding this relationship is essential for designing effective prevention and treatment strategies. In this study, “positive attitudes toward physical activity” refer to motivational and affective dispositions, such as valuing, enjoying, and being willing to engage in physical activity. The study aimed to explore the effects of such attitudes on various subdimensions of eating disorders, as well as the moderating role of gender in these associations. Methods University students from different regions of Türkiye participated in the study (n = 609; age M = 21.0, SD = 1.95). The gender distribution was 49.9% females and 50.1% males. The gender distribution was 49.9% females (n = 304) and 50.1% males (n = 305). Data were collected with the Physical Activity Attitude Scale for Children and Adolescents and the Eating Disorder Scale–Short Form (EDE-Q-13). SEM and Jamovi MedMod moderation tests were used to analyze the data. Results Positive attitudes toward physical activity did not significantly predict eating restraint (β=-0.0865, z=-1.94, p >.05) or shape/weight over-evaluation (β=-0.0836, z=-1.87, p >.05). However, they were significantly and inversely associated with body dissatisfaction (β = -0.1788, z = -3.87, p <.001), bingeing (β = -0.3201, z = -6.75, p <.001), and purging (β = -0.4591, z = -9.58, p <.001). Based on the positive and significant result of the PAPA ✻ gender interaction (B = 0.387, p <.05), gender appears to play a moderating role in the associations between physical activity attitudes and eating disorder symptoms. Conclusions Our results indicated that while positive attitudes toward physical activity did not significantly influence eating restraint, shape or weight overevaluation, they might have suppressive effects on body dissatisfaction, bingeing, and purging. Additionally, positive attitudes toward physical activity affected female and male participants differently. These findings may inform health promotion and physical activity interventions in university settings.Öğe Job-finding anxiety and burnout among university students in Türkiye: The mediating role of school alienation and the moderating role of gender(Tech Science Press, 2025) Aslan, Murat; Ugraş, Sinan; Ateş, Fatih; Akarsu, Mehmet; Akbuga, Taylan; Güllü, Mehmet; Mergan, BarışAlthough prior studies have examined job-finding anxiety, burnout, and school alienation individually, limited research has attempted to integrate these three constructs within a unified framework. This conceptual and contextual gap underscores the need to investigate these interrelations simultaneously, particularly among university students navigating heightened career uncertainties. The present study examined the mediating role of school alienation and the moderating role of gender in the relationship between university students' levels of job-finding anxiety and burnout. A total of 426 university students participated in the study, of whom 54.9% were male (n = 234) and 45.1% were female (n = 192) (Meanage = 23.00, SD = 2.34). The data were collected using the Sports Sciences Students' Job-Finding Anxiety Scale, the University Alienation Scale, and The Burnout Syndrome Inventory Short Version. To test for mediation effects, a simple mediation analysis was conducted, in which job-finding anxiety was treated as the independent variable, alienation as the mediator, and burnout as the dependent variable. Additionally, a conditional mediation analysis was carried out using the Generalized Linear Model module in Jamovi, with gender included as a moderator. Results from a conditional mediation analysis revealed significant positive relationships between job-finding anxiety, burnout, and school alienation among students in the faculty of sports sciences. Furthermore, school alienation was found to mediate the relationship between job-finding anxiety and burnout by transmitting a positive effect (higher job-finding anxiety -+/- higher school alienation -+/- higher burnout), and gender played a moderating role in this interaction such that the indirect path (jobfinding anxiety -+/- alienation -+/- burnout) was slightly stronger for women, whereas the direct path (job-finding anxiety -+/- burnout) was stronger for men. The results of the study were consistent with Conservation of Resources Theory (COR) because job-finding anxiety signals a threat to future resources, school alienation indicates reduced social and personal resources in the university context, and burnout reflects the consequences of continued resource loss. According to the findings, an increase in job-finding anxiety corresponds with a rise in burnout levels among students. The findings highlight the importance of fostering a sense of belonging and implementing gender-sensitive support programs in student counselling and development to reduce job-finding anxiety and burnout.Öğe Varying doses of evening caffeine ingestion have different effects on rowing ergometer performance, sleep quality, and wakefulness scores(Frontiers Media Sa, 2025) Karakulak, İzzet; Yıldırım, Ulaş Can; Erkan, Dilara; Karayiğit, Raci; Eyuboğlu, Ender; Diedhiou, Azize Bingöl; Gündem, Mehmet Can; Özmen, GökmenIntroduction: This study investigated the dose-dependent effects of evening caffeine ingestion on rowing performance, sleep quality, and daytime sleepiness in trained male rowers. Methods: Using a double-blind, randomized, crossover design, 13 university-level rowers (mean age = 22.07 +/- 2.21 years; mean body mass = 77.66 +/- 6.45 kg) completed four 2,000 m time-trial sessions between 19:00 and 20:00 h under placebo (PLA), low-dose capsule caffeine (3 mg/kg, LDC), moderate-dose capsule caffeine (6 mg/kg, MDC), and high-dose capsule caffeine (9 mg/kg, HDC) conditions. Performance metrics, heart rate, and subjective sleep assessments were collected. Rowing performance was assessed by a standard 2,000 m rowing ergometer (Concept II, United States) time trial. Sleep quality was measured with a numerical rating scale in the morning after each trial, and daytime sleepiness was measured with the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale. Results: Results indicated significantly improved rowing times and power output with HDC and MDC compared to PLA (p < 0.05), with HDC yielding the most notable enhancements (d = 0.40-0.41). However, these ergogenic benefits were accompanied by significantly impaired sleep quality and elevated daytime sleepiness in both HDC and MDC groups (p < 0.01; d = 1.3-1.5). Notably, adverse effects such as headache, insomnia, and gastrointestinal discomfort were predominantly reported in the HDC condition (p < 0.05). Although LDC offered mild performance improvements with minimal sleep disruption, only the high dose condition exhibited large physiological and perceptual trade-offs. Discussion: These findings indicate a clear dose-response relationship, wherein higher evening caffeine intake improves performance but has detrimental effects on sleep and recovery markers. Coaches and athletes should carefully balance caffeine dosing against potential recovery costs, especially in evening training or competition contexts.Öğe The mediating role of career concerns between career goal inconsistency, alienation and loneliness(Frontiers Media Sa, 2025) Ozman, Cemal; Uğraş, Sinan; Sağın, Ahmet Enes; Yücekaya, Mehmet Akif; Eyuboğlu, Ender; Daşkesen, Sonay SerpilUncertainty and inconsistency in career goals can weaken students' psychosocial adjustment. While the existing literature reports a link between this situation and loneliness and alienation from university, evidence on how these connections develop, particularly among sports science students, is limited. This study examined the mediating role of career concerns in the relationship between career goal inconsistency, loneliness, and university alienation. The study included 631 students from the sports science faculty in Türkiye. Validated self-report scales were used to measure the variables. The mediation analysis was carried out through the JASP 0.16.4 statistical program using structural equation modelling and bootstrap procedures. The tested model was confirmed. Career goal inconsistency positively associated with career concerns (beta = 0.46, p < 0.001), loneliness (beta = 0.21, p < 0.001), and alienation from university (beta = 0.26, p < 0.001). Career concerns also associated with loneliness (beta = 0.17, p < 0.001) and alienation (beta = 0.15, p < 0.001). Indirect associations were significant for the paths from career goal inconsistency to loneliness (beta = 0.08, p < 0.001) and to alienation (beta = 0.07, p = 0.001) through career concerns. The explained variances were R-2 = 0.36 for career concerns, R-2 = 0.16 for loneliness, and R-2 = 0.20 for alienation. These findings suggest that inconsistencies in career goals are associated with increased students' career anxiety, loneliness, and alienation from university, both directly and indirectly. Therefore, it is important to provide career counselling and guidance services that reduce students' anxiety and strengthen their sense of belonging to the university, especially in fields such as sports sciences, where career paths are often uncertain.Öğe Relationships among social support, healthy lifestyle beliefs, physical literacy, and enjoyment of physical activity: a moderated mediation model(Frontiers Media Sa, 2025) Yücekaya, Mehmet Akif; Uğraş, Sinan; Sağın, Ahmet Enes; Çetin, Arif; Iconomescu, Teodora-Mihaela; Talaghir, Laurentiu-GabrielObjective: This study aims to examine the relationships between social support, physical literacy, and healthy lifestyle beliefs in adolescents and to investigate the moderating effect of enjoyment of physical activities on these relationships. Method: The study was conducted with the participation of 1,349 adolescents. The ages of the participants ranged between 10 and 14 years, and 49.6% were male (n = 669) and 50.4% were female (n = 680). Data were collected using the Healthy Lifestyle Belief Scale for Adolescents to measure adolescents' healthy lifestyle beliefs, the Perceived Physical Literacy Scale for Adolescents (PPLSA) to determine their physical literacy levels, the Social Support Scale in Physical Activities to assess the perception of social support, and the Enjoyment of Physical Activity Scale to measure the level of enjoyment of physical activities. The study tested the moderated mediation model for its association among the variables. Results: The model developed in this study found social support in PA predicted health lifestyle beliefs, positively, and significantly. Social support and perceptions of a healthy lifestyle are moderated by physical literacy, research shows. A further analysis also found that the relationship between physical literacy and social support is moderated by enjoyment of physical activities. However, the association between social support and healthy lifestyle beliefs and between physical literacy and healthy lifestyle beliefs were not appreciably influenced by enjoyment in physical activity. The findings indicated that social support has a positive and significant effect on physical literacy and attitudes toward healthy lifestyle. Physical literacy was identified as a central contributor to improving adolescents' health habits by mediating the relationship between social support and conceptions of healthy living. However, the enjoyment of fitness did not matter in some situations, the study found. These results further illustrate the importance of promoting social support and physical literacy instruction to promote a wellness lifestyle adoption by adolescents. The possible long-term effects of feeling good about exercising in various settings, and for health-related habits, should receive more scrutiny.Öğe The mediating role of physical education course interest in the relationship between perceived autonomy support, feedback, and school attachment(Frontiers Media Sa, 2025) Sağın, Ahmet Enes; Yücekaya, Mehmet Akif; Ugraş, Sinan; Mergan, Barış; Temel, Cenk; Duran, Muhsin; Duarte-Mendes, PedroIntroduction: Students’ sense of school attachment is crucial for their academic success and emotional well-being. Previous studies have shown that autonomy-supportive behaviors and constructive feedback from teachers can positively affect students’ motivation and participation, especially in physical education (PE) classes. However, limited research has examined the mediating role of students’ interest in PE in the relationship between teacher support and school attachment. This study investigates the mediating role of physical education course interest in the relationship between perceived autonomy support and perceived teacher feedback and students’ overall school attachment. Methods: A total of 560 middle school students in Türkiye participated in this study. The study utilized validated scales to assess perceived autonomy support, teacher feedback, interest in PE, and school attachment. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and mediation analyses were conducted using JASP software, with bootstrap methods applied to test indirect effects. Results: Findings revealed that both perceived autonomy support and teacher feedback positively and significantly predicted school attachment. Interest in PE was found to mediate the relationship between these variables and school attachment. Specifically, perceived autonomy support and feedback increased students’ interest in PE, which in turn enhanced their sense of attachment to school. Conclusion: The study highlights the crucial role of autonomy-supportive teaching and constructive feedback in strengthening students’ interest in PE and promoting school attachment. Teachers who foster a supportive learning climate can significantly enhance students’ educational engagement and emotional connection to school.Öğe Perceived Bullying in Physical Education Classes, School Burnout, and Satisfaction: A Contribution to Understanding Children's School Well-Being(Mdpi, 2025) Ugraş, Sinan; Sağın, Ahmet Enes; Yücekaya, Mehmet Akif; Temel, Cenk; Mergan, Barış; Couto, Nuno; Duarte-Mendes, PedroAim: This study examines the effects of peer bullying that middle school students experience in physical education classes on school burnout and school satisfaction to understand children's well-being in this important stage of their lives. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to analyze the data and examine the direct and indirect relationships between students' perception of bullying, school burnout and satisfaction. Results: The findings indicate that perceived bullying in physical education classes positively and significantly predicts school burnout (beta = 0.388, p < 0.001), while it negatively and significantly affects school satisfaction (beta = -0.122, p = 0.006). Moreover, significant positive relationships were found between perceived bullying and school burnout, and significant negative relationships were found between perceived bullying and school satisfaction. Conclusions: This study reveals that peer bullying in physical education classes significantly affects students' school burnout and satisfaction. These findings highlight the need for developing effective strategies to prevent bullying in educational settings and promote children's healthcare and well-being.Öğe Physical activity levels and psychological parameters among university students following the COVID-19 pandemic(Bmc, 2025) Yapar, Ahmet; Özgider, Can; Adiloğulları, İlhan; Bavlı, Özhan; Adiloğulları, Gamze ElifBackgroundThe worldwide pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus has profoundly impacted virtually every aspect of life. The education sector was also significantly impacted, with numerous educational institutions adopting online learning due to the pandemic. The university period is one of substantial transformation and transition for young individuals. During this educational stage, the advent of emerging social networks, coupled with the necessity for effective network management, can precipitate stress in university students, potentially leading to alterations in their psychological well-being. The objective of this study was to compare the self-efficacy, psychological resilience and self-confidence of university students with different levels of physical activity (PA) according to gender and school year variables.MethodsThe study was a cross-sectional design. The Sample comprised 2,868 undergraduate students, 1,405 female and 1,463 male, enrolled in 10 different faculties at & Ccedil;anakkale Onsekiz Mart University. The participants were administered the International Physical Activity Questionnaire, the General Self-Confidence Scale, the Psychological Resilience Scale and the Self-Efficacy Scale.ResultsSignificant difference was observed between the general self-efficacy score of participants with low and moderate PA levels and those with high levels of PA. The psychological resilience variable was affected by the level of PA. Individuals with a low level of PA exhibited a lower level of psychological resilience than those with a moderate or high level of PA. Upon analysis of self-confidence, both internal and external self-confidence scores demonstrated an upward trajectory for the low, moderate, and high PA groups. Furthermore, the results of the study indicated that as the level of PA increased, there was a corresponding increase in self-efficacy, psychological resilience and self-confidence among university students.ConclusionsResults indicated that higher levels of PA among university students were positively associated with increased self-confidence, self-efficacy, and psychological resilience. Consequently, by facilitating the organization of diverse physical activities and providing opportunities, university administrations can foster enhanced self-confidence, self-efficacy and psychological resilience among their students.Öğe The predictive effect of well trained elite men road cyclists' anthropometry values and strength endurance on climb time trial performance(Mre Press, 2025) Kürkçü Akgönül, Esra; Özen, Gökmen; Havadar, Tarkan; Coşkun, Ali; Özlu, MetinBackground: Cycling performance is primarily determined by endurance, with both lower and upper extremity muscle strength having a decisive impact on race performance. No studies have examined the relationship between strength values and field performance, especially in elite level male road cyclists. The aim of this study was to explore and the relationship between anthropometric values, strength endurance and climb time trial (TT) performance in elite male road cyclists. Methods: A total of 36 male road cyclists volunteered to participate (age: 21 f 2 year, height: 175 f 3 cm, weight: 70 f 4 kg; body fat ratio: 8 f 2%). The athletes underwent five visits: for demographic data collection, height and body weight measurements, body composition analysis, strength assessment (plank, push-up, pull-up, squat, barbell curl) and a TT test. Results: The results of multiple linear regression analysis revealed a statistically significant prediction formula, showing that plank duration and push-up repetitions could predict hill TT performance time (r = 0.66 and r(2) = 0.44 (t (2, 33) = 13.099, p <0.001) and average cycling speed at (r = 0.69 and r(2) = 0.48 levels (t (2, 33) = 9.149, p <0.001). However, no significant prediction formula was found for the anthropometric parameters (body weight, body fat ratio, muscle mass, bone mineral content, total body water, muscle mass ratio). Anthropometric values were not predictive of hill TT duration (t (2, 33) = 2.132, p = 0.070) and average speed (t (2, 33) = 1.519, p = 0.297). Conclusions: In conclusion, the duration of plank and push-up endurance movements are significantly related to hill time trial performance and these exercises serve as predictors for cycling performance.Öğe Cohesion to life on the land of migration: Olympic education and refugees(Sage Publications Ltd, 2024) Örsoğlu, Tuğce; Yıldıran, İbrahimDue to global migration, addressing essential needs like nutrition, housing, and security has become a pressing concern for migrants and host communities, with social cohesion being a primary focus. Material: The sample consisted of 18 well-trained and 18 sedentary male university students aged between 20 and 22 years old. The peripheral fasting blood samples were collected from each participant. Laboratory analysis was made to determine the red and white blood cells counts and their concentration percentage. Results: The means of white blood cell, lymphocyte, monocyte counts, and lymphocyte and monocyte percentages were significantly lower in the well-trained group while the means of hemoglobin count, mean cell hemoglobin, red blood cell distribution width were significantly lower in sedentary group (p > .05). However, no statistically significant difference between groups was found in red blood cell counts, granulocyte counts, and granulocyte percentages (p > .05). Conclusions: Our findings show that athletes participating in the long-term regular exercise have the high level of the concentration of red blood cells subtypes and the low level of the concentration of white blood cells subtypes when compared to their sedentary peers. Because their hematologic values remain within the reference range for healthy people, these differences do not pose any serious clinical problems for athletes. The high RBC and low WBC subtypes values of athletes may be explained by chronic adaptation to long-term exercise.Öğe The impact of existing and modify wrestling shoes on foot posture deformities in 12-13 years old athletes(Iermakov S S, 2022) Coşkuner, Zeki; Açak, Mahmut; Büyükçelebi, Hakan; Özen, Gökmen; Kurak, KemalBackground and Study Aim In the early years when sports footwear became compulsory, the importance of shoe design was not considered in terms of athletes' health. In this regard, this study aims to determine the effect of existing wrestling shoes on foot deformation. Material and Methods The study was carried out with the participation of 108 young male athletes who had the same training on the same ground for three years in the Wrestling Training Center. The athletes were divided into two groups, an experimental and a control group. While the control group wore wrestling shoes produced by widely used brands, the experimental group wore newly designed wrestling shoes. Foot arch values and images of both groups were determined using a podoscope device at the beginning and end of the study. The evaluations were made according to the Staheli arch index. Results The results of the statistical analysis revealed that differences were found in the footprint measurement values of the control group. It was determined that this difference in the footprints was greater among the freestyle wrestlers. The decrease in the averages between the first and second measurement values of the group using the newly designed wrestling shoes was found to be highly positive and in a linear direction. Also, it was determined that the pain score values of the control group were higher than the scores of the experimental group after training. Conclusions The results revealed that there were deformations in the feet of the control group wrestlers wearing available wrestling shoes. It was observed that freestyle wrestling athletes had more deformation than Greco-Roman style wrestlers, and leg pains were more prevalent after training and competitions. Based on these results, it was concluded that the design of wrestling shoes produced with today's technology needs to be redesigned.
