This chapter focuses on securitization theory and examines the relationship between migration and security in both conceptual and historical contexts, particularly within the framework of the securitization of migration. For this purpose, it first looks at the history of migration in both Europe and Türkiye and analyzes the periods in which security-oriented discourse and rights-oriented policies were implemented. In the second part, the study constructs the relationship between Syrians and security in Türkiye through legal regulations and practices since 2011. Considering that one of the most important factors determining Türkiye’s migration management and especially its approach to Syrians is its relations with the European Union (EU), especially the 18 March 2016 Deal, the last section discusses securitization, externalization, and instrumentalization. © 2025 selection and editorial matter, Serhat Ahmet Erkmen and Mehmet Emin Erendor; individual chapters, the contributors.
