A journey to children's perceptions on forest fire through drawings in Canakkale Province, Turkey: Exploring the needs for alternative educative approaches
(Routledge, 2019) Söküt Açar, Tuğba; İnalpulat, Melis; Ayman Öz, Nilgün; Genç, Levent; Arslan, Hasan; Böbek Bağran, Aslı
The study aimed to statistically analyze forest fire perceptions and cognitive deficits of children through drawings. Results showed that children's perceptions on forest fire were under desirable levels. Also, perception levels were significantly impacted by gender and grade level, whereas impact of school type was not significant. Since children's imaginations are found to be limited and most of forest fires are known to arise from human-induced activities, applied approaches are suggested to enlarge their vision on nature and forest fire with the purpose of raising more responsible, aware, and environmentally-conscious children, as a contributor to prevention of future forest fires. © 2018, © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

    Academic inbreeding in Kazakhstan
(Sage Publications Ltd, 2025) Dogan, Miray; Arslan, Hasan; Kashkhynbay, Baizhuman; Baltabayeva, Zhaniyat
Academic inbreeding, the practice of hiring graduates from within the same institution, persists in Kazakhstan due to cultural norms, institutional practices, and economic factors. While it offers advantages like continuity and familiarity, it also carries risks like intellectual stagnation and excluding external perspectives. This paper explores the complex dynamics of academic inbreeding in Kazakhstan and proposes measures to mitigate its adverse effects. Importantly, these measures are designed to preserve the positive aspects of institutional loyalty and tradition, ensuring that the essence of Kazakh higher education is not lost in the change process. Findings reveal that key strategies include implementing clear legal frameworks, fostering academic mobility, and promoting merit-based recruitment policies. Academic mobility offers a promising avenue for introducing fresh ideas and perspectives, preventing stagnation, and enhancing the intellectual vitality of academic institutions. A balanced approach that combines internal loyalty with the inclusion of external talent will ensure the long-term sustainability and innovation of Kazakhstan's higher education system. By adopting these strategies, Kazakh universities can foster a more dynamic, diverse, and competitive academic environment.

AI In Higher Education: Risks and Opportunities From the Academician Perspective
(Wiley, 2025) Doğan, Miray; Çelik, Arda; Arslan, Hasan
This research investigates how artificial intelligence (AI) influences higher education, specifically exploring the perspectives of academicians regarding associated risks and opportunities. The study is aimed at the implementation of AI within university settings and its impact on both educators and students. Given the swift integration of AI, notably the widespread adoption of generative AI in higher education, the article emphasises AI's ability to collect detailed data, providing a deeper understanding of academicians' learning experiences. This, in turn, enables personalised support, allowing academicians to respond more effectively to students' needs and improve the overall educational process. Moreover, the research highlights AI's potential to proactively identify students at risk of failure, offering academicians a comprehensive view for more effective assessment. On the other hand, these advantages and the growing dependence on technology pose challenges, including reduced interaction between academicians and students, shifts in workforce dynamics, concerns about student privacy and disparities in technology access. Acknowledging these issues, the study underscores the importance of preparing academicians and students for the evolving landscape of higher education shaped by AI. It stresses the need for proactive measures to navigate these changes effectively, as they are inevitable. The findings of this study are significant for the field of higher education, as they provide a clear and critical assessment of AI's transformative potential and advocate for proactive measures to navigate the changes effectively.

Digital Practices by Citizens During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Findings From an International Multisite Study
(JMIR Publications Inc., 2023) Marston, Hannah Ramsden; Ko, Pei -Chun; Prabhu, Vishnunarayan Girishan; Freeman, Shannon; Ross, Christopher; Öztürk Çalıkoğlu, Halime; Arslan, Hasan; Bilir-Koca, Burcu
Background: The COVID-19 pandemic brought digital practices and engagement to the forefront of society, which were based on behavioral changes associated with adhering to different government mandates. Further behavioral changes included transitioning from working in the office to working from home, with the use of various social media and communication platforms to maintain a level of social connectedness, especially given that many people who were living in different types of communities, such as rural, urban, and city spaces, were socially isolated from friends, family members, and community groups. Although there is a growing body of research exploring how technology is being used by people, there is limited information and insight about the digital practices employed across different age cohorts living in different physical spaces and residing in different countries. Objective: This paper presents the findings from an international multisite study exploring the impact of social media and the internet on the health and well-being of individuals in different countries during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Data were collected via a series of online surveys deployed between April 4, 2020, and September 30, 2021. The age of respondents varied from 18 years to over 60 years across the 3 regions of Europe, Asia, and North America. On exploring the associations of technology use, social connectedness, and sociodemographic factors with loneliness and well-being through bivariate and multivariate analyses, significant differences were observed. Results: The levels of loneliness were higher among respondents who used social media messengers or many social media apps than among those who did not use social media messengers or used <= 1 social media app. Additionally, the levels of loneliness were higher among respondents who were not members of an online community support group than among those who were members of an online community support group. Psychological well-being was significantly lower and loneliness was significantly higher among people living in small towns and rural areas than among those living in suburban and urban communities. Younger respondents (18-29 years old), single adults, unemployed individuals, and those with lower levels of education were more likely to experience loneliness. Conclusions: From an international and interdisciplinary perspective, policymakers and stakeholders should extend and explore interventions targeting loneliness experienced by single young adults and further examine how this may vary across geographies. The study findings have implications across the fields of gerontechnology, health sciences, social sciences, media communication, computers, and information technology.

Empowering Academics in the Digital Age: Navigating the Transformation of Higher Education
(Wiley, 2025) Dogan, Miray; Arslan, Hasan
This study examines the multifaceted impact of digital transformation on academic staff in higher education, focusing on their lived experiences at a public university in Turkey. As universities increasingly integrate digital technologies into their core operations, this transformation is reshaping teaching, research and administrative practices. Drawing on a qualitative phenomenological approach, the study involved 25 faculty members and examined how digitalization affects academic roles, professional development, workload, motivation and perceptions of institutional policies. The findings reveal that while digital transformation offers opportunities for innovation, flexibility and global collaboration, it also presents significant challenges, including increased workload, administrative burden, digital fatigue and inequities in access and competence. Participants emphasised the importance of acquiring digital competencies, receiving institutional support and being included in decision-making processes regarding technology use. The study highlights the need for inclusive, sustainable and ethically grounded digital strategies in higher education and calls for stronger alignment between institutional policies and the realities experienced by academic staff. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of how universities can empower faculty to navigate the digital age effectively while fulfilling their social and educational missions.

Faculty International Engagement: Examining Rationales, Strategies, and Barriers in Institutional Settings
(Sage Publications Inc, 2022) Çalıkoğlu, Alper; Lee, Jenny J.; Arslan, Hasan
The dramatic expansion of the international dimension in higher education has incited broadened and diverse interpretations of internationalization. As faculty members are integral in achieving many of the expected higher education goals, understanding their perspectives toward internationalization process is critical. Administrative leaders also play a vital role in influencing the conditions of internationalization and working alongside the faculty. Addressing the rationales, strategies, and barriers encountered, our study seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of faculty internationalization. Employing a phenomenological design, we interviewed 22 participants, including central administrators of two public research universities and both faculty and administrative leaders of these universities' colleges of education. Revealing diverse rationales, strategies, and barriers, our findings confirm faculty's initiator and maintainer roles in operationalizing internationalization. Our study also corroborates the need for sustainable mechanisms and for a consensus between faculty perspectives and institutional priorities. Recommendations are made to improve faculty engagement in internationalization.

Faculty's Academic Intellectual Leadership: Predictive Relations with Several Organizational Characteristics of Universities

Faculty's academic intellectual leadership: the intermediary relations with universities' organizational components
(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2018) Uslu, Baris; Arslan, Hasan
In line with 'the entrepreneurial university' discourse, managerialism and performative culture brought new expectations to faculty such as developing online programmes/courses, carrying out training for professionals, obtaining research funds, leading projects in cooperation with industry/business, collaborating with colleagues from various disciplines, participating in international networks and representing their disciplines and institutions. These new duties and the traditional roles of academics, as knowledge producer and public intellectual, constitute their intellectual leadership. Given these new circumstances, it is important to investigate the influence of universities' organizational components to understand how university managers can support academics' intellectual leadership. This research aims to explore intermediary relations between communication, climate and managerial practice flexibility in universities and academics' intellectual leadership. Quantitative data were collected from 937 Turkish faculty via an online questionnaire and analysed using Path analyses. Analysis revealed that faculty, by their intellectual leadership behaviours, contribute to the development of their disciplines, institutions and society, and that communication in universities has a strong impact on faculty's intellectual leadership by mediation of the organizational climate and managerial flexibility regarding scholarly practices. Consequently, university managers should establish functional communication systems in their institutions to generate a positive atmosphere and to maximize the efficiency of institutional practices.

Graduate Student Engagement and Digital Governance in Higher Education
(Mdpi, 2025) Dogan, Miray; Arslan, Hasan
This study explores graduate students' perceptions of and experiences with digital governance in higher education, using data from semi-structured interviews with thirty participants. A qualitative research design guided the investigation, addressing six research questions related to the definition, roles, effectiveness, required skills, challenges, and opportunities of digital governance. The findings reveal varying levels of familiarity with digital governance, often linked to concepts of e-government and efficient decision-making. However, many participants lacked a deep understanding of the term. Key roles of digital governance identified include improved data management, enhanced transparency, and increased inclusivity in decision-making processes. The study also highlights significant challenges, such as inadequate infrastructure, inconsistent implementation, and a lack of formal training in digital governance. Despite these barriers, digital governance offers practical benefits, including streamlined administrative processes, better accessibility, and improved research outcomes. Participants emphasized the importance of digital skills education but noted that weak infrastructure and limited curricular integration hinder skill development. Opportunities identified include greater efficiency, expanded access to education, and better support for marginalized groups. The study concludes with recommendations for a holistic approach, combining education reform, infrastructure improvement, and stakeholder collaboration to optimize the benefits of digital governance in higher education. These insights provide valuable guidance for policymakers and educators seeking to enhance digital governance in academic institutions.

How human resource operations work in higher education institutions
(Elsevier Science Bv, 2013) Arslan, Hasan; Akdemir, Ali; Karsli, Mehmet Durdu
The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions of faculty members about human resources operations in their higher education institutions whether human resources operations were adopting value-added service delivery strategies or not. An assessment instrument from the HR Value Proposition Model was applied to faculty members. The assessment tool from the HR Value Proposition Model was adapted to the higher education environment. The HR value-added model consists of 14 criteria in order to evaluate the perceptions of faculty members. The results indicate that a value-added roles model for higher education institutions requires a re-definition of HR roles, the development of new competencies, and the implementation of new approaches and outcomes accountability.
