Öğe A Dedication to ???????? ?????? from the Inner Troad(Archaeology and Art Publications, 2018) Özhan, TolgaThis paper aims to examine a recently discovered small fragment of a dedicatory inscription engraved on a low pedestal that was found in the countryside of the Pazarköy village near the town of Ezine in the Çanakkale province. This inscription reveals that a statuette representing Aphrodite Ourania and Nephthys was dedicated to Osiris bearing the epithet ????????. The presence of Nephthys and Aphrodite Ourania, equated with Isis, in the same context suggests that the dedication could be connected to the Osiris myth. It is, therefore, reasonable to conclude that this dedication from a location in the inner Troad may have been dedicated during the festival Inventio Osiridis in order to commemorate the death and revival of Osiris. The translation of the inscription is as follows: “I dedicated Aphrodite Ourania [and] his own sister Nephthys to King Osiris. © 2018 Archaeology and Art Publications. The Kaletepe Inscription(Akdeniz Universitesi - Akdeniz Dillerini ve Kulturlerini Arastirma Merkezi, 2024) Deniz Oğuz-Kirca, E.; Özhan, Tolga; Demirciler, VolkanThis article introduces a new fragmentary inscription discovered on the hillside during the archaeological survey at Kaletepe, situated northeast of Bozburun (Marmaris/Muğla), in 2022. The inscription, which dates to the Hellenistic period, lists eight non-natives of Tymnos along with their ethnics and monetary contributions for the augmentation (epauxesis) of an unidentified purpose. Parallel examples suggest that they may have been affiliated with a cult or a profession-al association. © 2024, Akdeniz Universitesi - Akdeniz Dillerini ve Kulturlerini Arastirma Merkezi. A characteristic feature of the general decoration of Assos-type sarcophagi is the attention-grabbing shape of the sizeable central panel positioned on each of the long sides of the sarcophagus. It is proposed that these large central panels may have been schematic representations of rectangular or round funerary altars. Accordingly, the depiction of the funerary altar on the sarcophagus is considered to be a new hybrid style of the practice in the necropolis of Assos of erecting a funerary altar along with the sarcophagus. With this sarcophagus inscription dating to the third century AD, the presence of a professional association of shipwrights, which is known to have existed in a number of important harbour cities in the western part of the Roman Empire, is attested for the first time in Alexandreia Troas and Asia Minor in general. The epithet ????????? labelling the collegium suggests that the association may have had a privileged position in the ancient city. The anonymous owner of the sarcophagus may have been associated with the collegium of shipwrights at Alexandreia Troas and, presumably, he was a shipwright. © 2019, Archaeology and Art Publications. Providing information about thetomb architecture of Alexandreia Troas in the Roman Imperial period, the inscription constitutes the firstclear epigraphic evidence in the city about the practice of erecting a sarcophagus on the top surface of akamara. Archaeological example of these monumental tombs has not documented in the city. However, analogous practice is well known from the necropolis of Phrygian Hierapolis. The inscription also showsthat the sarcophagus was placed on a ‘stepped pedestal’ called ekbasmosis, a rare term recorded in inscriptions. With this inscription, the term tymborychia which is common in the funerary inscriptions with fineclause, especially in Caria and Pisidia, firstly appears in Alexandreia Troas.Öğe Craftsmen in assos in the light of new inscriptions(2013) Arslan, Nurettin; Özhan, TolgaThis study aims to evaluate inscriptions recendy identified on the seats of the theater of Assos in the light of related literary and archaeological evidence. These inscriptions prove that craftsmen such as blacksmiths, leather-workers and stonecutters were working at the dty during the Roman Imperial Period, providing us with information about the socio-economic aspects of the dty. The location of these inscriptions in the theater demonstrates the sodal status of professional assodations in the dty and their significant roles in local economy. This also makes it possible to evaluate the importance of the aty's natural resources such as andesite and valonian oak.Öğe New Inscriptions from the Smintheion(Akdeniz Universitesi - Akdeniz Dillerini ve Kulturlerini Arastirma Merkezi, 2023) Özhan, Tolga; Kaplan, DavutThis article presents six inscriptions from the sanctuary of Apollo Smintheus. Of these, inscription no. 2 was discovered during a survey in 2006 and the other five were found during the excavations at the site from 2009 onwards. In addition to the contribution of these inscriptions to the onomastic repertoire of Alexandreia Troas in general, inscription no. 1, which attests for the first time to the existence of the office of hieronomos at the sanctuary, and inscription no. 6, which records a religious association called ???? ????????? are of particular interest. Inscription no. 1 is carved on an architectural block from a building of the Hellenistic period. It is not possible to determine with certainty to which building this block belongs, but the building or restoration costs were covered by the revenues of the god, and this construction activity is dated by the office of hieronomos. Also dating to the Hellenistic period, inscription no. 2 on an altar commemorates Kallistos, son of Agemachos, after his death. The depiction of a temple key on this altar suggests that Kallistos may have served Apollo Smintheus as a key-bearer. In inscription no. 3, a benefactor named Titus Aelius Metrodoros, bearing the title philopatris, is honoured by his dearest fatherland (????????? ??????), Alexandreia Troas. Inscription no. 4 on a marble plinth is a dedication of a column to Apollo Smintheus by Publius Quintilius Axios, probably a freedman of the Publii branch of the Quintilii, a senatorial family of Alexandreia Troas, and his wife Daphne. Inscription no. 5 is a dedication to Apollo Smintheus by Turianius Gamos, which is a variant of the rare nomen Turrianius. The final inscription no. 6 is an ex-voto dedicated to a sacred association (???? ?????????) by a person, for whom only the father's name and the nickname, Publius, have survived. © 2023, Akdeniz Universitesi - Akdeniz Dillerini ve Kulturlerini Arastirma Merkezi. A Fragment of an Honorary Inscription from the Smintheion(Akdeniz Universitesi - Akdeniz Dillerini ve Kulturlerini Arastirma Merkezi, 2024) Özhan, TolgaThis article presents a fragmentary inscribed slab discovered in the sanctuary of Apollo Smintheus in 2009. The author proposes a restoration for this fragmentary inscription in the article, by comparing it with parallel epigraphic examples from Asia Minor. According to the proposed restoration, this is an honorary inscription for a distinguished citizen of Alexandreia Troas who held many various positions, including syndikos, presbeutes, and possibly a priestly role (prophetes) in the sanctuary. Furthermore, the restored phrase theioi Autokratores is of considerable significance, as it is rarely found in inscriptions. The individual in question was sent as a presbeutes on multiple occasions to the theioi Autokratores. Based on a parallel instance in Athens, it is argued in the article that the phrase theioi Autokratores (divine emperors) in the current inscription refers to the jointly reigning emperors Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. © 2024, Akdeniz Universitesi - Akdeniz Dillerini ve Kulturlerini Arastirma Merkezi. Yazıtlar, Assos’ta Roma İmparatorluk Dönemi’nde taş ocağı işçilerine, dericilere ve demircilere ait üç meslek birliğinin varlığını ortaya koyarken kentteki sosyo-ekonomik duruma dair ipuçları sunmaktadır. Yazıtların tiyatro içerisindeki konumları bu meslek gruplarının kentteki statülerinin derecesini ve kent ekonomisindeki önemli rollerini yansıtmaktadır. Bunun yanı sıra meslekleri; taş, meşe palamudu gibi kentin doğal kaynakları ile ilişkilendirerek okumak mümkün olmaktadır.
