A Stylistic study of Rupert Brooke's war poems at lexical level

ABSTRACT Bu tezde Rupert Brooke'un 1914 yılında yazmış olduğu beş adet savaş sone'si Lexis seviyede, üslup açısından incelenmiştir. Rupert Brooke okulda çok parlak bir öğrenciydi, fakat mutlu değildi. Uzun seyahatlara çıkıp dünyayı dolaştı. Sonunda Çanakkale'de savaşacak olan Kraliyet Deniz Tümenine katıldı fakat o da Lord Byron gibi hastalıktan ölüp Ege Denizindeki Sikiros adasında gömüldü. Şiirleri incelendiğinde onun ruh hali kullandığı kelimelerden açıkça anlaşılmakta ve melankolik bir durumda olduğu açıkça gözlemlenmektedir. Erken ve genç yaşta ölümü onun fazla eser vermesini önlemiştir. Karışık bir karaktere sahip melankolik bir haldedir. The National Times'ın Arts and Writing bölümünde Noel Annan imzalı bir makalede bu konu çok güzel açıklanmaktadır (32- 33). Lexis açısından incelenen şiirler şunlardır: "The Treasure", "The Peace", "Safety", "The Dead", and "The Soldier".

ABSTRACT In this thesis five sonnets written by Rupert Brooke in 1914 have been analysed in terms of stylistics at lexical level. Rupert Brooke was a brilliant student at school but he was not a happy man. He took long journeys and travelled around the world. Before he died he joined the Royal Naval Division which would fight in Gallipoli but before he fought- like Lord Byron- died of the disease in a hospital ship in the Aegean sea and then he was buried in Skyros island. When his poems are analysed, his psychology is very clearly understood from the words he used and you cannot help thinking of his future. It seems that he foresaw his end and it would not be too long. He would write many poems if he did not die very young and early. His psychology is very complicated and melancholic. This psychology is clearly shown in an article written by Noel Annan in the section of The National Times (32-33).
