Tracing the representations and discourses of motherhood and mother/daughter dyad in contemporary British women's poetry: Warsan Shire, Jackie Kay and Ann Gray

Bu tez annelik vasfının kadın kimliğine karşı idealize edilmesi, 'gerçek' anne kimliği, öz/üvey anne ikilemi ve anne-evlat rollerinin sorgulanması bağlamında Britanyalı çağdaş kadın şairlerin üç farklı şiir koleksiyonundaki annelik söylemleri ve anne-kız ilişkilerini incelemektedir. Warsan Shire'nin Blessed the Daughter Raised by a Voice in Her Head (2022) isimli eseri, Jackie Kay'in The Adoption Papers (1991) koleksiyonu ve Ann Gray'in I wish I Had More Mothers (2018) kitabı kadınların kişisel tecrübelerini farklı şiirsel ses ve biçemler üzerinden yansıtarak geleneksel erkek egemen edebiyata ve annelik söylemlerine karşı çıkmakta ve bunları yeniden şekillendirmektedir. Bu bağlamda, Adrienne Rich'in Kadından Doğma: Bir Deneyim ve Kurum Olarak Annelik adlı eserinden ve alandaki diğer çağdaş tartışmalardan yola çıkarak, tezdeki her bir bölüm annelik kavramı, anne kimliği ve anne-kız ilişkisi konularını seçilmiş şiirlerdeki tematik ve yapısal çeşitlikler bağlamında tartışmıştır. Bu tez, yakın okuma tekniğini kullanarak, idealize edilmiş annelik tanımı, öz/üvey annelik kavramları üzerinden 'gerçek' anne kimliği tartışmaları ve anne-çocuk ilişkisindeki bakım etiği konularına çok boyutlu bir yaklaşım sunmayı amaçlamaktadır. İncelenen şiir koleksiyonlarındaki şiirsel dilin ve yapının anneliğin tasviri hakkında çeşitli bakış açıları sunması, ataerkil annelik söylemini sorgulaması ve geleneksel annelik rollerini eleştirip yeniden şekillendirmesi tartışılmıştır. This thesis explores the discourses of motherhood and the mother-daughter relationship in the context of the idealisation of maternal womanhood, the notion of the 'real' identity of the mother, the dichotomy of birth and adoptive motherhood, and deconstruction of maternal-filial roles in the works of three contemporary British women poets: Warsan Shire's Blessed the Daughter Raised by a Voice in Her Head (2022), Jackie Kay's The Adoption Papers (1991) and Ann Gray's I wish I Had More Mothers (2018). These poetry collections reflect subjective experiences of women through distinct poetic voices and styles, challenging and reshaping the traditionally male-centred literature and analysis of motherhood discourse. Drawing on Adrienne Rich's seminal work, Of Woman Born: Motherhood as Experience and Institution, and contemporary debates in the field, each chapter discusses the concept of motherhood, maternal identity, and mother-daughter relationship, analysing both thematic and structural variations in the selected poetry collections. Through a close reading of selected poems, this study aims to provide a multidimensional approach to the institution of idealised motherhood, a discussion on the 'real' identity of mother regarding the dichotomy of birth and adoptive motherhood, and the ethics of care in maternal-filial relationship. It contends that the poetic diction and form employed in these poetry collections under scrutiny offer a range of perspectives on the depiction of motherhood, challenge patriarchal discourses on motherhood and provide insight into the re-formation and deconstruction of conventional maternal roles.
