In this study, some biochemical parameters (hematocrit, glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, uric acid, urea, urea-nitrogen, total protein, and creatinine) depending on the pre-breeding (March & April 2013) and breeding (June & July 2013) periods and sex were determined in a total of 32 (15??; 17??) Testudo hermanni specimens distributed in the Thracian Region. For the biochemical parameters, 0.5 ml of blood was collected from the caudal vein by means of a 5-ml syringe. The blood was transferred into the biochemical tubes containing lithium heparin and centrifuged, and the plasma part was separated. Data about biochemical parameters were obtained from the collected blood thanks to a spectrophotometer. In conclusion, when the values in the pre-breeding and breeding periods were investigated in species Testudo hermanni, the hematocrit, glucose and cholesterol values were seen to be higher in the male individuals than in the female individuals in the breeding period, whereas the triglyceride, uric acid, urea, urea-nitrogen and total protein values were found higher in the female individuals than in the male individuals. In the pre-breeding period, however, the hematocrit, glucose, triglyceride, uric acid, urea, urea-nitrogen and total protein values were seen to be higher in the male individuals than in the female individuals, while only cholesterol was detected to be higher in the female individuals than in the male individuals. Nevertheless, creatinine varied neither in the two periods nor in the two sexes.
