Veba Geceleri: One Allegoric Fiction, Two Large Political Figures

| dc.description.abstract | The novel Veba Geceleri, published in 2021 by Orhan Pamuk, which is about the plague epidemic and the process of nation-stateization in an imaginary Ottoman island (Minger Island), has a fiction that can be evaluated with its allegorical quality. The fiction can be read as a representation of the construction of an independent nation-state, which gained visibility in third world countries as well as the social and political conditions in today’s Turkey, based on certain points of view. However, the real attention in the fiction is not the allegorical quality in question, but in connection with this -more precisely with the allegorical possibility for the nation-state building in Turkey- that marked the recent history of Turkey, and which has come into existence with very strong symbolic values from historical personalities in various forms of thought it is the inclusion of two major political figures, which are sometimes considered in the axis of dual-opposition, to the character staff both together and in the foreground. One of these figures is Abdülhamit, the other is Atatürk, who is represented by Kolağası Kamil in the fiction. Here in our study; we will question how both figures gain visibility in the fiction, how the “imaginary narrator” Mîna Mingerli included them in the fiction with their positive and negative aspects. Then we will go to the background of the novel and examine the ideological basis of the formation of the two figures in fiction and their relationship with the current political attitude of the author | |
| dc.description.abstract | Orhan Pamuk’un 2021’de yayımlanan, hayali bir Osmanlı adasındaki (Minger Adası) veba salgınını ve ulus-devletleşme sürecini konu alan Veba Geceleri romanı; her şeyden evvel alegorik imkânlarıyla değerlendirilmesi gereken bir kurguya sahiptir. Kurgu, belli olay ve durumlardan hareketle, hem üçüncü dünya ülkelerindeki ulus-devlet inşasının hem söz konusu sürecin Türkiye özelinde varlık kazanışının hem de günümüz Türkiye’sindeki toplumsal ve siyasi koşulların temsili olarak okunabilir niteliktedir. Ancak kurguda asıl dikkat çeken söz konusu alegorik nitelik değil, fakat bununla -daha doğrusu Türkiye’deki ulus-devlet inşasına dönük alegorik imkânla- bağlantılı olarak; Türkiye’nin yakın tarihine damga vuran, çeşitli düşünce biçimlerinde tarihsel kişiliklerinden çok güçlü sembolik değerleriyle varlık kazanan ve zaman zaman ikili-karşıtlık ekseninde ele alınan iki büyük siyasi figürün karakter kadrosuna hem bir arada hem de ön planda yer alacak şekilde dâhil edilmesidir. Bu figürlerden biri Abdülhamit, diğeriyse kurguda Kolağası Kâmil üzerinden temsil imkânı bulan Atatürk’tür. İşte çalışmamızda; her iki figürün kurguda ne şekilde görünürlük kazandığını, “hayali anlatıcı” Mîna Mingerli’nin onları olumlu ve olumsuz yönleriyle kurguya nasıl dâhil ettiğini sorgulayacağız. Daha sonra romanın arka planına geçip iki figürün kurgudaki biçimlenişinin ideolojik zeminini ve yazarın güncel siyasi tavrıyla ilişkisini irdeleyeceğiz. | |
