The Effect of Using Documentary Movies on (th Grade Students' Science Learning

The present study investigated the influence of using documentary movies in the course of Science and Technology on elementary school 8th grade students’ achievements in such subjects as “Cell Division and Heredity” and “Force and Motion”. The study was piloted with 22 8th grade students attending an elementary school in the city of Eskisehir. A total of 113 students found in the control and experimental groups participated in the study. The science and technology teacher made the experimental group students watch the documentary. As for the control group students, they watched the lessons in line with the course curriculum of Science and Technology. The research data were collected with a multiple choice 20-item achievement test for the lesson units of Cell and Force and with an observation form developed by the researchers. When the results obtained via the Cell and Force Achievement Test were examined, it was seen that there was a significant difference between the experimental group students’ scores in the achievement pre-test and post-test and the control groups students’ pre-test and post-test scores in favor of the post-tests. This study demonstrated that use of documentary movies in the course of Science and Technology could contribute positively to students’ achievements.

Bu araGtırmada fen ve teknoloji dersinde belgesel kullanımının 8. sınıf öğrencilerinin “Hücre Bölünmesi ve Kalıtım” ile “Kuvvet ve Hareket” ünitelerindeki baGarılarına etkisi araGtırılmıGtır. EskiGehir’de bir orta okulda bulunan 22 sekizinci sınıf öğrencisiyle çalıGmanın ön uygulaması yapılmıGtır. AraGtırmaya deney ve kontrol gruplarında yer alan 113 öğrenci katılmıGtır. Deney grubundaki öğrencilere fen ve teknoloji öğretmeni tarafından belgeseller izletilmiGtir. Kontrol grubundaki öğrencilere ise fen ve teknoloji dersi öğretim programının önerdiği Gekilde fen ve teknoloji öğretmeni tarafından dersler iGlenmiGtir. Veriler araGtırmacılar tarafından geliGtirilen 20 çoktan seçmeli sorudan oluGan Hücre ve Kuvvet BaGarı Testi ve gözlem formu ile toplanmıGtır. Hücre ve Kuvvet BaGarı testinden elde edilen sonuçlar incelendiğinde deney grubundaki öğrencilerin baGarı ön test ve son test puanları ve kontrol grubundaki öğrencilerin baGarı ön test ve son test puanları arasında son test lehine anlamlı bir farklılık bulunmaktadır. Bu araGtırma, fen ve teknoloji dersinde belgesel kullanımının öğrencilerinin baGarılarının artırılmasına olumlu katkı sağlayabileceğini göstermektedir.
