The German language is rich in toning particles [[]Abtonungspartikeln] (Helbig 1994) which give lexical meaning a flavour of the type of relationship and whose function lies in managing the interaction between speaker and listener. Many languages, such asTurkish, only have a few of them, so that they can cause difficulties for learners of German as a foreign language, who are used to setting a lexical equivalent from their mother tongue. To make it easier for language learners to pick up particles of this type, this study goes on to examine how a German reader for elementary and intermediate levels treats these toning particles. In order to illustrate their meaning, their use and the difficulty of rendering them into Turkish, the study focuses on four typical representatives: denn, doch, ja and eigentlich. Finding that it pays attention to pragmatic particles in general, this article proposes strategies for teaching them effectively with readers.
