Mytilus galloprovincialis, a bioindicator, was collected from the Canakkale Strait to investigate heavy metal concentrations related to contamination. Pb, Cu, Zn and Fe heavy metal concentrations were determined in the mussel at six selected stations, namely Hamzakoy (Station 1), Gelibolu Tersanesi (2), Kilya Koyu (3), Eceabat cam Burnu (4), Kilitbahir (5) and Buyuk Kemikli Burnu (6). These mussel samples were collected six times in 2009, 2010, 20122013 during winter, spring, summer and autumn seasons. Zinc (19.15 mu g/g) is at the highest level in spring 2010 and Pb (0.05 mu g/g) has the lowest in winter 2010. While maximum values of the heavy metal concentrations are observed at Station 2, the minimum values are from Station 6. All stations are associated with mean seasonal values: Station 2> Station 3 > Station 4> Station 5 > Station 1 > Station 6. There were significant differences between heavy metal concentrations among the first four seasons (p<0.05). Values determined as seasonal averages (Fe > Zn > Cu > Pb) have been discussed, based on Anonymous, FAO, WHO/FAO, EPA, TME data and previous studies in the region, within the limits of the northern Aegean and southern Marmara Sea. In conclusion, it is suggested that these heavy metal levels do not pose an environmental risk in Canakkale Strait.
