An investigation into the secondary school EFL students' perceptions of language learning in a study abroad context

Özet
Bu çalışma daha önce yurt dışına giden, altıncı, yedinci ve sekizinci sınıf düzeylerinde 80 özel ortaokul öğrencisine uygulanmıştır. İlişkisel araştırma modelinin kullanıldığı çalışmada nicel ve nitel araştırma yöntemleri kullanılmıştır. Burada kullanılan her bir alt boyut SPSS 22 programında ayrı ayrı analiz edilmiştir.8. sınıf öğrencilerinden 10'u ile röportaj yöntemi ile görüşülerek yurtdışında eğitim deneyiminin dil öğrenme süreçlerine katkılarına ilişkin algıları değerlendirilmiştir. Araştırma sonucunda yurt dışında eğitim görmüş ortaokul öğrencilerinin motivasyon düzeylerinin dil öğrenimi konusunda genel olarak olumlu olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Bu çalışmada, yurt dışı deneyiminin öğrencilerin yalnızca motivasyon düzeylerine değil aynı zamanda konuşma becerilerine, konuşmada özgüven ve kültürler arası farkındalıklarına da katkısı olduğu görülmüştür. This study was carried out in order to determine the motivation levels and attitudes of secondary school students who have study abroad experience towards learning English, to determine whether there are significant differences depending on gender and class, and to examine the relationship between these variables. This study was applied to 80 sixth, seventh and eighth grade private secondary school students who have been abroad before. Quantitative and qualitative research methods were used in the study in which the correlation research design was used. Each sub-dimension used here was analyzed separately in the SPSS 22 program.10 of the 8th grade students were interviewed and their perceptions about the contributions of study abroad experience to their language learning process were gathered. As a result of the study, it was concluded that the motivation levels of study abroad experienced secondary school students were generally positive about language learning. In this study, it was seen that having study abroad experience contributes not only to students' motivation levels but also many aspects like speaking skills, intercultural awareness and confidence in speaking.
