Developing an Occupational Anxiety Scale for Emergency Medical Service Professionals

Background: Emergency medical serviceprofessionals regularly make critical decisionsthat directly affect life-related to patient’s care.Anxiety may restrict the healthcare professionalsduring this period. Present study is aimed todevelop a measurement tool that measuresthe occupational anxiety levels of healthcareprofessionals providing emergency medicalservices in a valid and reliable manner.Methods: In this descriptive study, data wereobtained from three different groups. Thesewere; the group (50 people) to whom openended questions were asked in order to obtainthe scale items, the group (209 people) on whomexplanatory factor analysis and reliabilityanalysis were performed and the group (201people) on whom confirmatory factor analysiswas performed. Individuals in all groupswere healthcare personnel who were involvedin providing emergency and pre-hospitalemergency medical services.Results: As a result of the validity analyses, itwas determined that the scale should consist of22 items with two factors. This structure wasconfirmed by confirmatory factor analysis. Thereliability value was determined to be 0.914 forthe entire scale; 0.922 for the factor of bodily,physical and vital concerns; 0.866 for the factorof concerns regarding setting, staff, equipmentand environmental factors.Conclusion: It was concluded that the scaledeveloped in accordance with these resultsin the context of the participants in this studymeasures the professional concerns of thepersonnel providing emergency medicalservices in a valid and reliable manner. It isof vital importance for all individuals whomay need service at any time to determine thefactors that cause high professional anxiety anddevelop anxiety-reducing measures, especiallyfor Emergency Medical Services professionals.The Occupational Anxiety Scale of EmergencyHealth Professionals developed can be usedin such studies and will be a starting point formore detailed studies.
