Rüya Ataklı Yavuz 2030 Global Goals and the European Union Introduction It can be said that the sustainable development efforts on a global scale have been developed under the leadership of the United Nations (UN). The Brundtland Report, prepared by the World Environment and Development Commission in 1987 and presented to the UN General Assembly, known as “Our Common Future,” can be considered a milestone in terms of achieving the current meaning of the concept of sustainable development. In the following years, several meetings were held with the support of the governments of many countries, targets were set, and reports were put forward in the way of sustainable development. The “Sustainable Development Goals,” or in short,” Global Goals,” which were announced by the United Nations in September 2015 and enacted in January 2016 and aimed at 2030, have been accepted and supported by governments. In order to achieve sustainable development goals, the policies implemented by developing countries should be brought closer and harmonized with the international policies to be followed in global sustainable development efforts. In this respect, developed countries have responsibilities. In particular, the European Union is one of the pioneers of setting global standards in the issue of sustaining development and guiding the policies that will increase the economic and social well-being of all countries that are partners of these common objectives. Furthermore, the policies implemented to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals are essential for the continuity and future…. © Peter Lang GmbH.
