Buildings, green spaces and urban water elements make up the fabric of a city. The spaces remaining outside the buildings in the city are called urban open spaces. Design and planning in urban open spaces are made by landscape architects and presented to the use of the city-dweller. The components used in these designs become a part of that city. Thus, it appears as a sign in the open spaces of the city. The parts can be a bench, a tree, a road, a fountain, a cover element or a pattern of a floor covering. These parts are actually the sign itself. These signs used or seen by the city-dweller have a meaning for them. It is possible to use the semiotic reading method in the discovery of this meaning. Within the scope of the method, the reading is made as “the landscape component that emerges with the code consisting of the concepts such as a sign by the landscape architect to the city-dweller, the connotation and denotation meaning of it, and the color, form and texture of it”. In this direction, it has been tried to make semiotic reading in landscape components for Pier Square, which is the focal point in Çanakkale city, and its immediate surroundings. In the area, components such as the city square, artistic monuments and objects, boundary element, and sitting unit and floor covering were evaluated. As a result of the reading process made according to the method, the semantic dimension was revealed. © Peter Lang GmbH Internationaler Verlag der Wissenschaften Berlin 2021 All rights reserved.
