dc.description.abstractThis article aims to study the use of terms such as fiqh al-lughah and 'ilm al-lughah by early and contemporary scholars of the Arabic language. The definition, content and object of these terms are reviewed. In the early periods, there is no distinction of fiqh al-lughah and 'ilm al-lughah. This distinction is identified by some modern scholars of the Arabic language after reading early studies of the Arabic language through western literature and translating and adopting western concepts of philology and linguistics to the Arabic language. Therefore, first of all, the meaning of the concepts in western terminology is scrutinized and then the question of whether there is such a distinction in the early period of Arabic language studies is examined. Finally the point that to what extent modern distinction of fiqh al-lughah and 'ilm al-lughah reflects the reality is discussed.
