    A Comparative Analysis Regarding Pictures Included in Secondary School Geography Textbooks Taught in Turkey

    This study brings in a comparative approach regarding pictures involved in secondary school (14-17 ages) textbooks taught in Turkey. In this respect, following the classification of pictures (line drawings and photographs) included in secondary school education geography textbooks, evaluation of the photographs in books in question in terms of quality measures has been made. In addition, after listing the problems experienced regarding the illustration works in secondary school education geography textbooks, suggestions will be made regarding illustration sufficiencies in geography textbooks.

    A Locomotive Sector in Turkish Manufacture Industry: The Iron and Steel Industry

    The Turkish Iron and Steel Industry, a strategic manufacture sector, which constitutes the base of the industrialization undertakes a locomotive duty in the development. The foundations of Turkish iron and steel industry were laid in the 1930's. The Karabuk Iron and Steel Establishments, which is the first entegrated facility, were open to operate in 1939 and the establishments of Erdemir in 1965 and Isdemir in 1975 followed this flourishing. As well as the entegrated establishments founded by the Turkish State, with the involment of the private sector after the year 1960, the growth process of sector has increased. As parallel to the developments in economic structure, the crude steel production capacity of the private and public sectors of Turkey increased through the foundations opened to operate as from the second time of 1980's. As well as privatization of Isdemir in 2002, the sector possession was completely passed on to the private sector on completion of privatization of Erdemir shares in March in 2006. Today the Turkish iron and steel industry is the eleventh great producer of the world with the crude steel production capacity of 34.1 million ton and the production of 26.8 million ton. In this study, after mentioning about the foundation and development of the Turkish iron and steel industry, the subject matters of raw materials, energy and work force assurance, production and marketing have been dealt. Besides this, after stating the relationships of the iron and steel industry with other sectors and by product industry, the relationships of the Turkish iron and steel industry with the world iron and steel industry have been taken into consideration.

    An evaluation of changes to the secondary school geography curriculum in Turkey in 2005

    This study aims at introducing, explaining and evaluating the revised secondary school (high school) geography lesson curriculum in Turkey. Preliminary studies on the new curriculum started in 2002, and it was implemented in 2005. In this context, the article will focus on the programme development process and approaches, principle components of the programme, and its learning and assessment areas. The new geography teaching programme is based on the constructivist approach. It is dependent on active learning and enquiry and is student-centred. In this respect, the new programme is aimed at educating students towards critical thinking and constructed knowledge as well as equipping them with geographical and spatial analysis skills.

    An Examination Aiming at the Socio-Economical Effects of Agricultural Facilities: Tahirova Agricultural Facility

    The research was performed under the scope of the effects of Tahirova Agricultural Facility, which was named as Anadolu Etap Tahirova Farm after it was rented and which is located within the borders of Gonen district which is bound to city of Balikesir in Southern Marmara section of Marmara region. In the research, apart from the field studies which were conducted in and around the facility, survey method (which is one of the quantitative research methods) was also used. With the help of the survey which was applied to 84 farmers from surrounding villages the benefits of the facility for the agricultural life of surrounding villages and the expectations of farmers were determined. Apart from this, the studies of the facility and the agricultural policies that will be followed and investments that will be made were determined within the frame of interview technique applied to Anadolu Etap Tahirova Farm representative after the rental of the facility. Before it was in the course of rental, it took on the tasks of fulfilling the demands of regional farmers by raising certificated seed and breeding animals and conveying the modern agricultural techniques to farmers. The facility decided to concentrate only on fruit growing after rental.

    The Appliance Industry in Turkey

    The foundations of the Turkish appliance industry were laid at the end of 1950's. Washing machine in 1959, refrigerator in 1960, oven in 1963 and vacuum cleaner and half-automated washing machine were produced. The appliance industry developed considerably in the years 1980-2000, after the years 2000, has obtained tremendous successes through contemporary production technologies at very modern factories. Today, the Turkish appliance industry has come to a position of Europe's the second big manufacturer. During 1990's, the investments made to the research and development made it possible that the sector should produce its own technology and as a result of this, the sector has become a position where it will be able to compete with its international rival sectors at the world markets. The sector using its developed logistic sub-structure and the advantage of its geographical nearness to Europe has maintained its speed development and made considerable contributions to the Turkish economy. Within this study, after mentioning about foundation and development of the Turkish appliance industry, the topics such as raw materials, provision of energy and workpower, production and marketing have been dealed. On the other hand, after dealing with the relationships of the appliance industry with supply industry, the relationships of the Turkish appliance industry with the world appliance industry have been evaluated.
