Its total length was 93.3 cm and weight was 1120 g. The given size is the maximum observed length value of the species for the Aegean Sea and the other coasts of Turkey. Also, it is the second largest length ever reported in the all seas of the world.Öğe Antioxidant radical scavenging capacity and total carotenoid content of narrow-clawed crayfish (Pontastacus leptodactylus, Eschscholtz, 1823) in Atikhisar Reservoir (Çanakkale, Türkiye)(Walter De Gruyter Gmbh, 2023) Acarli, Sefa; Kizilkaya, Bayram; Vural, Pervin; Berber, Selcuk; Kale, Semih; Acarli, DenizIn this study, antioxidant radical scavenging capacity and total carotenoid content in the meat and shells of Pontastacus leptodactylus were investigated. Concerning the antioxidant scavenging effect, the highest IC50 values were found to be 388.77 mg g(-1) and 155.53 mg g(-1) for females and males in July and March, respectively. The mean IC50 values of the meat were calculated as 239.83 mg g(-1) and 105.21 mg g(-1) for females and males, respectively. The mean total carotenoid content in the meat was found to be 14.35 and 12.78 mu g g(-1) for females and males, respectively. The results indicated that crayfish meat had antioxidant radical scavenging capacity and was rich in carotenoid content.Öğe Catch per Unit Effort (CPUE) for Discard, Bycatch and Target Catch of Trawl Fishery in the Coasts of Gokceada Island (North Aegean Sea, Turkey)(Kahramanmaras Sutcu Imam Univ Rektorlugu, 2022) Acarli, Deniz; Kale, Semih; Cakir, KamilThe aim of the present study is to determine the catch per unit effort (CPUE) for discard, bycatch and target catch of commercial trawl fishery in the coasts of Gokceada Island (Northern Aegean Sea). A total of 19 bottom trawl hauls (99.8 hours) were carried out on the coasts of Gokceada Island in the north Aegean Sea, between March 2015 and April 2017, with commercial trawler. During the study period, 58 species and 7938 individuals belonging to 46 families were caught. In terms of the number of species, the ratios in the total catch for target, bycatch and discard species were calculated as 5.17%, 50.00%, and 44.83%, respectively. Among sampled species, the most caught commercial species were; European hake (Merluccius merluccius), deep-water rose shrimp (Parapaneus longirostris) and blue whiting (Micromesistius poutassou). The total catch amount was calculated as 1146.44 kg. While the catch amount of target species was 817.87 kg (71.34%), the catch amount of bycatch and discard was calculated as 328.57 kg (28.66%). The CPUE value of the targeted species was determined as 31.5 kg operation-1, while the CPUE values of bycatch and discard were calculated as 10.11 and 2.39 kg operation-1, respectively. Moreover, the hourly CPUE value of targeted species was calculated as 8.19 kg hour-1, while the hourly CPUE values of bycatch and discard were determined as 2.63 and 0.62 kg hour-1, respectively.Öğe Comparison of Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) Having Different Attractors(Medwell Online, 2010) Altinagac, Ugur; Kara, Ali; Ayaz, Adnan; Acarli, Deniz; Begburs, Cenkmen R.; Öztekin, AlkanIn this study three FAD types, which were being commonly used in small scale fisheries and had different attractors were tried. Attractors such as pyramid, rope and panel types were tied to static FADs. The fish species and densities attracted by them were examined. The samplings were made through visual census, trammel nets and line fishing before and after the deploying of FADs. Any significant difference was not able to be found statistically between the attractors tied to fish aggregating devices. In the result of observation and samplings before and after the deploying of FADs, while 10 fish species belong to 6 families were observed before deployment, 16 fish species belong to 11 families were determined after the deployment of the FADs.Öğe Comparison of Fresh and Dried Flathead Grey Mullet (Mugil cephalus, Linnaeus 1758) Caviar by Means of Proximate Composition and Quality Changes during Refrigerated Storage at 4±2°C(Central Fisheries Research Inst, 2012) Celik, Ufuk; Ataman, Can Altinel; Dincer, Tolga; Acarli, DenizThe aim of this research was to compare the differences in shelf life and resistance to decomposition of fresh and dried caviar produced from flathead grey mullet (Mugil cephalus, Lin. 1758) caught from Homa Lagoon, which is located 20 km northeast of Izmir Bay, Turkey. The proximate compositions of caviars were determined as follows: moisture 50.2+/-0.15 %, crude fat 13.1+/-0.23 %, protein 25.7+/-0.43 %, ash 1.48+/-0.03 % and carbohydrate 9.59+/-0.10 %, for fresh caviar and moisture 26.3+/-0.53 %, crude fat 13.3+/-1.51 %, protein 41.8+/-0.56%, ash 4.68+/-0.11 % and carbohydrate 14.0+/-0.05 % for dried caviar. The proximate composition values of dry and fresh caviars were significantly different (P<0.05). To determine the refrigerated shelf life, chemical quality control analysis using Total Volatile Basic Nitrogen (TVB -N), Trimethylamine (TMA) and Thiobarbituric Acid (TBA), pH and color values were measured. Both fresh and dried samples were found to be spoiled end of the 8th day of refrigerator storage, based on their TMA-N and TVB-N values.Öğe Gamogenetic cycle, condition index and meat yield of the Noah's Ark shell (Arca noae Linnaeus, 1758) from Gerence Bay, Aegean Sea Turkey(Ege Univ, Fac Fisheries, 2018) Acarli, Sefa; Lok, Aynur; Acarli, Deniz; Kucukdermenci, AysunGamogenetic cycle, the condition index and meat yield of the Arca noae Linnaeus, 1758 (Noah's ark shell) were followed in Gerence Bay (Aegean Sea, Turkey), between August 2009 and July 2010. Temperature, salinity, chlorophyll-a, particulate organic and inorganic matter were monitored during the sampling period. According to histological observation, inactive stage was determined as 100% in September. The spawning period was observed through the year except September, with a peak from April to June. Sex ratios were not equal and females were dominant during the study period (2: 1). Meat yield, condition index and gonad index reveal a positive relationship between each other (P=0.05). Among environmental parameters, inverse relationship was only found between particulate inorganic matter and reproduction (P=0.05).Öğe Ghost fishing by monofilament and multifilament gillnets in Izmir Bay, Turkey(Elsevier, 2006) Ayaz, Adnan; Acarli, Deniz; Altinagac, Ugur; Ozekinci, Ugur; Kara, Ali; Ozen, OzcanTo investigate and compare ghost fishing by monofilament and multifilament gillnets, six monofilament and six multifilament experimental gillnets (each 33 m long) were deployed at two locations, set at various depths between 9 and 14 m in Izmir Bay (eastern Aegean Sea). The gillnets were monitored every other day by divers. Each captured fish or crustacean was tagged to enumerate the total catch. The experimental gillnets at one location (three monofilaments and three multifilaments) were lost after the 42nd day. At the other location, ghost fishing continued for 106 days by the monofilament gillnets and for 112 days by the multifilament gillnets. A total of 29 species (22 fish, 5 crustacean, 1 cephalopod, and I gastropod) were captured by the ghost gillnets at the two locations. In addition, 17 specimens of the endangered species Pinna nobilis were killed during the study. Weekly fish catch rates of both gillnet types declined exponentially. Repeated-measures analyses of variance revealed that the total catch rates of fish in the monofilament gillnets were significantly higher (P < 0.05) than those in the multifilament gillnets. After six months of deployment, the effective fishing areas of the monofilament and the multifilament gillnets decreased by 55 and 63%, respectively. One year after deployment, all the multifilament gillnets had completely collapsed; one monofilament gillnet had disintegrated and totally lost its fishing ability whereas the other two monofilament gillnets were excessively colonized by biota and the nets were about to collapse. All rights reserved.Öğe Ghost fishing over the shipwrecks of Gallipoli Campaign (Canakkale, Turkiye)(Turkish Marine Research Foundation-Tudav, 2023) Acarli, Deniz; Kale, SemihThe phenomenon of ghost fishing, characterized by the persistent capture of marine organisms by lost or abandoned fishing gear, poses a significant threat to underwater cultural heritage, particularly around historic shipwrecks. This study focused on the ghost fishing and its impact on shipwrecks in the Gallipoli Campaign during World War I in Canakkale, Turkiye. Underwater surveys were carried out between July and September 2023. The research explores the entanglement of fishing gear around these shipwrecks, assessing its ecological consequences on marine life and the structural integrity of the shipwrecks. The study also emphasizes the need for comprehensive documentation, monitoring, and management strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of ghost fishing on both biodiversity and historical artifacts. Recommendations include establishing monitoring programs, involving local communities, raising awareness, implementing regulations, and organizing underwater cleanup events.Öğe Gillnet Selectivity for Bluefish (Pomatamus saltatrix, L. 1766) in Canakkale Strait, Turkey(Central Fisheries Research Inst, 2013) Acarli, Deniz; Ayaz, Adnan; Ozekinci, Ugur; Öztekin, AlkanTo determine the selectivity of gill nets with 22, 23, 25 and 28 mm nominal mesh size (bar length) for bluefish (Pomatamus saltatrix, L. 1766), the study was conducted at three different stations between 20 and 30 m water depths at Canakkale Strait, Turkey, between February 2007 and April 2012. Gill net with 22, 23, 25 and 28 mm mesh size (bar length) each having same twine thickness (210 denier / 3) and 100 mesh depth vertically were rigged for this purpose. The fish samples were obtained by drive-in fishery method during winter season. The SELECT method was used in determining selectivity parameters. By comparing the deviances of five different models of SELECT method, lognormal model gave the best fit. The modal lengths of the gill nets with 22, 23, 25, and 28 mm mesh size were estimated 22.24, 23.25, 25.27 and 28.30 cm, respectively. Coefficients a and b for the length-weight relationships (LWRs) and length-length relationships (LLRs) were calculated with W=aLb formulae and as equations of TL=a+bFL and TL=a+bSL respectively. Equations of length-length for converting standard length and fork length into total length and vice versa were proven linear. The involved relationships were significantly interrelated (R2>0.942). Values b in the LWRs varied from 2.21 to 3.96 (mean +/- SE: 3.15 +/- 0.08). The fish were weighed, and measured and their length-weight relations were determined. Samples were collected during 2009-2010 using four different types of fishing gear (beach seine, fyke nets, barrier trap, and trammel nets; mesh size: 25, 28, and 30 mm) that allowed both adult and juvenile specimens to be captured. Significant length-weight relations were found for all species. The exponent b varied between 2.753 for Pomatoschistus marmoratus and 3.650 for Aphanius fasciatus (mean value = 3.115). The length-weight parameters of the same species may be different in the population because of feeding, reproduction activities and fishing etc. Therefore, we need to know length-weight relations of fish, which are captured in a given place in a certain period of time. Length-weight relations for 5 out of the 29 fish species are presented for the first time from Homa Lagoon in the Turkish Aegean Sea.Öğe Length-weight relationship of Eriphia verrucosa (Forskal, 1775) (warty crab) in Canakkale Strait(Ege Univ, Fac Fisheries, 2018) Ozekinci, Ugur; Acarli, DenizThis study was carried out between April 2016 and March 2017 in order to determine length-weight relationship of Eriphia verrucosa (Forskal, 1775) in canakkale Strait. In the study, 598 individuals were sampled by using skin diving techniques as 239 female (39.97%) and 359 male (60.03%). The carapace width (CW) of the all individuals, males and females was calculated as 55.03 +/- 0.52mm, 56.55 +/- 0.75mm and 52.76 +/- 0.63mm, respectively. The mean weights of the individuals (W) were measured as 90.48 +/- 03.37g and 62.44 +/- 02.16g respectively for male and female. Relationship between CW and W of warty crab individuals were expressed as W=0.0003CW(3.1083 )(R-2 =0.9158) for all individuals, W=0.0002CW(3.163) (R-2 =0.9223) for male and W=0.0001CW(2.6995) (R-2 =0.8427) for females. According to the calculated b value, positive allometry was determined for all individuals and males, negative allometry was determined for female individuals.Öğe Length-Weight Relationships of Eighteen Fishes and a Cephalopod from Gokceada Island, Northern Aegean Sea, Turkey(Springer Int Publ Ag, 2022) Acarli, Deniz; Kale, Semih; Cakir, KamilLength-weight relationships were estimated for 18 fish species and a Cephalopod species from 17 families. A total of 3433 individuals were caught from the coasts of Gokceada Island, Northern Aegean Sea, Turkey. Pagellus acarne, P. bogaraveo, Gadiculus argenteus, Scyliorhinus canicula, Lepidopus caudatus, Capros aper, Lepidorhombus boscii, Hoplostethus mediterraneus, Ophidion barbatum, Helicolenus dactylopterus, Coelorinchus caelorhincus, Argentina sphyraena, Lophius budegassa, Chlorophthalmus agassizi, Lepidotrigla cavillone, Conger conger, Engraulis encrasicolus, Serranus hepatus and Illex coindetii (Cephalopoda) were collected by commercial trawl from the coasts of Gokceada Island. The slopes (b) of the length-weight relationships ranged between 2.5091 and 3.4807 with a mean of 3.0265. All length-weight relationships were highly significant (p < 0.0001). This paper provides valuable information for biological studies and stock assessments of these fishes in fisheries management and decision-making processes.Öğe Mass mortality report of the critically endangered Pinna nobilis (Linnaeus, 1758) in Gokceada (North Aegean Sea, Turkey)(Ege Univ, Fac Fisheries, 2022) Acarli, Deniz; Acarli, Sefa; Oz, Melike IdilIn August 2020, a total area of 38000 m(2) around Gokceada has been scanned to determine the current population status of Pinna nobilis. 9 stations (Yildizkoy, Manastir, Marmaros, Gizli Liman, Laz Koyu, Kapikaya, Karacavus, Karacavus shore and Kefalos) have been detected by means of SCUBA and ABC diving techniques. All specimens were found dead (total mass mortality of 100%). The samples were collected by a SCUBA diver at intervals of 4 weeks, also replacing the collectors during 12 months at 8-m depth. In addition, environmental parameters, such as temperature, salinity, chlorophyll-a, particulate organic matter and particulate inorganic matter in water column, were monthly measured. Fifteen bivalve species were recorded, and among these, Ostrea edulis, Pinctada radiata, Chlamys varia, Chlamys glabra Modiolus barbatus, Mytilus galloprovincialis, Area noae, and Anadara inaequivalvis have a commercial value. P. nobilis represented 0.84% of total amount. Settlement was observed only in August (122 individuals/0.4 m 2) and spat data showed significant variations between outside (8%) and inside (92%) of each mesh bag collector but also the deployed time (P<0.05). Length of spat ranged between 0.3 and 15.3 mm. Using specimens collected monthly from March 2008 to February 2009, this study examines the gonadal development and biochemical composition in the adductor muscle of the fan mussel in relation to environmental parameters, such as chlorophyll-a, seawater temperature, salinity, particulate organic and particulate inorganic matter at Karantina Island, Aegean Sea, Turkey. We observed gonadal development primarily in the spring months and at the beginning of the summer. The spawning period was observed from May to September (primarily in July, with 88.8%). Monthly variation of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) was inversely correlated with protein of adductor muscle and positively correlated with glycogen of adductor muscle, meat yield, and the adductor muscle index (p<0.05). Our findings suggest that protein in the adductor muscle was used as an energy reserve for gametogenesis. Gonad samples were analysed histologically in order to determine the sex ratio and gonad development stage. Overall, the sex ratio was recorded as 2.2% female, 42.6% male, 37% hermaphrodite and 17.9% inactive. Glycogen content showed considerable variations between August and February, but decreased gradually thereafter. However, glycogen did not directly affect the reproductive cycle. Total lipid content was positively correlated with temperature and inversely correlated with salinity. In addition, this parameter was influenced by the reproductive activity, which is correlated with the fluctuation of the condition index and gonad index (P<0.05). However, the relationship between the protein index and the gonad index was negative (P<0.05). The results of this study showed that protein was the major energy resource. The condition index varied between 2.69 +/- 0.91 (February) and 12.29 +/- 1.45 (April) during the year. With respect to meat yield, oyster quality changed from fine to special, except in December and February.
