Öğe Forgetting Berkes: A Story of Forgetting in the Context of Mourning and Melancholia(Liberte Yayınları, 2024) Toker, Serhat; Demirpolat, AznavurNiyazi Berkes is an important figure, especially in the field of sociology, in an early period of the formation of social sciences in Turkey. Although he has produced works on a wide range of subjects such as history, society, politics and theology, his focus has always been social transformation, especially Turkish modernization. In this focal point, he produced works that made a difference in his period with his historical and social perspective. The Problem of Westernization in Turkish Thought (1975) and Development of Secularism in Turkey (1964) are the most prominent among them. Berkes, who made significant efforts to institutionalize the science of sociology in Turkey and put forward studies that can be considered as the first examples in the field, was first removed from his position within the academy, then forced to live abroad. After his death, it is the common opinion of many commentators that he was forgotten. This study problematizes this forgetting and investigates the reasons for his oblivion, in the context of mourning and melancholia, setting out from an article he wrote for Yusuf Akçura
