The research is carried out with students from 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade (N: 201) of a middle school. The word association test is used to collect the data. The data collected from the word association test are evaluated by using the content analysis method. The concepts obtained from the content analysis are coded separately by two researchers and the average value of interrater reliability is found as 91%. As a result of the analysis of the data; it is seen that middle school students express 1571 different concepts related to the concept of technology. The concepts are divided into categories and a total of 11 categories are identified. The findings of the study show that students perceive technology as communication tool, computer, product and tool. The most remarkable finding is that students' experiences with technological tools in their everyday life are influential on their technology perceptions. As a result, it is determined that students' have limited understanding regarding technology concept.Öğe Determination of Factors Affecting Preschool Teacher Candidates' Attitudes towards Science Teaching(Edam, 2012) Timur, BetulThe purpose of this study was to determine preschool teacher candidates' attitudes towards science teaching and to examine the reasons behind their attitudes in depth. In this study, mixed methods were used including quantitative and qualitative data. Quantitative data gained by attitudes towards science teaching scale, qualitative data gained by focus group interview with 10 preschool senior teacher candidates. Data were analyzed by content analysis methods. At the end of the analysis four themes were attained. These four themes are; science content knowledge, experience of science teaching, opinions of the science education course in their undergraduate program, knowledge of science teaching methods. Preshool teacher candidates' attitudes towards science teaching were obtained good level. However, comfort-discomfort sub-dimension was identified as having medium attitude score. In addition, as a result of focus group interview data, science content knowledge and positive science teaching experience have been found to be most effective positive attitudes towards science teaching. In light of results obtained from the study, educational suggestions for preschool teacher candidates' attitudes towards science teaching are made.Öğe Determining Primary School Candidate Teachers' Levels of Environmental Literacy(Kamla-Raj Enterprises, 2013) Timur, Serkan; Timur, Betul; Yilmaz, SirinThe core of environmental literacy is to answer questions related to our world and our relationship with it, to search and to find answers to these questions, and the way we use these answers. Environmental literacy can be defined as obtaining information related to environment, educating yourself in subjects related to environment, and directing yourself to act on this issue. An individual's attitude, affective disposition, cognitive skills towards environment and information about environment represents his environmental literacy. The aim of this study is to determine the environmental literacy levels of primary education candidate teachers who study at different grades. This study which uses a surveillance model includes 419 candidate teacher participants who study in the fall semester of 2012-2013 academic years. In this study, Environmental Literacy Survey which is prepared by Karatekin (2011) is used as data collection tool. This survey contains tests for affective disposition towards environment, environment behavior, environment knowledge, and environment cognitive skills. The results show that environmental literacy level of candidate teachers is moderate. It is found that candidate teachers' affective disposition towards environment is high, information about environment, attitudes towards environment and environment cognitive skills are moderate. It is found that environmental literacy levels of candidate teachers are significantly different based on their department and whether they took a course related to environment or not. Environmental literacy levels do not change significantly based on gender of candidate teachers and education levels of their parents. In addition, it is found that environmental literacy of candidate teacher's increase as levels of their curiosity about news and information about the environment increases. At the end of the study, in light of the obtained results, some suggestions are made for this study, researchers, and for future studies.Öğe Developing Achievement Test on Cell Subject for 6th Grade: A Validity and Reliability Study(Cukurova Univ, 2019) Timur, Serkan; Dogan, Fatih; Cetin, Nagihan Imer; Timur, Betul; Isik, RuveydaIn this study, it is aimed to develop a valid and reliable achievement test for the subject of Cell belonging to the 6th grade Systems in our Body unit within the scope of Science course. The achievement test was prepared as a 25-item multiple-choice test, considering the cell-related objectives in the 6th grade Science curriculum. The pilot study of the test was carried out with 62 students attending 6th grade in 2017-2018 academic year. The comprehensibility and the consistency with the scientific knowledge of the test items were prepared by the opinions of various experts in the field of science education. The item analysis was performed according to the answers of the students in the achievement test, and the discriminant and difficulty indexes were calculated for each item. After the item analysis, 3 items were excluded from the test and a Cell Achievement Test (CAT) consisting of 22 questions was obtained. The mean item difficulty of CAT was 0.652 and the mean discrimination index was 0.507.Öğe Investigating Pre-service Teachers' Knowledge and Behaviors toward Environment(Kamla-Raj Enterprises, 2014) Timur, Serkan; Timur, Betul; Karakas, AytacThis study aimed to investigate the relationship between knowledge and behaviors of elementary pre-service teachers who attend various majors. The study was carried out with 171 (88 females, 83 males) students from three different schools in the city of Sakarya in 2012-2013 school year. Out of the participants, 35 were fifth grade students, 40 were sixth grade students, 54 were seventh grade students and 42 were eighth grade students. Though the study was a qualitative one, open-ended questions developed by the researchers were used to collect data and content analysis was employed for the analysis of the data. The analyses revealed that the most commonly used environment-related concepts are tree, flower, and forest. When the students' drawings were analyzed, they were grouped under four main headings as Model 1, the environment as a place where animals/plants live-a natural place; Model 2, the environment as a place that supports life; Model 3, the environment as a place impacted or modified by human activity; and Model 4, the environment as a place where animals, plants, and humans live. Among these, the most frequently encountered one in the students' drawings was Model 3, the environment as a place impacted or modified by human activity. Moreover, the students' drawings were also analyzed in relation to gender variable, and it was found that the drawings of female students exhibit more variety than the drawings of the male students. In light of the findings of the study, some suggestions were made for researchers and further research.
