Öğe Positive psychology in Turkey: A review study of postgraduate theses(Gokmen Arslan, 2017) Telef, Bulent BakiThe aim of this study was to examine the trends of postgraduate theses in psychology, psychiatry, and education related to positive psychology in Turkey. The sample consisted of 204 masters' and doctoral theses written in the fields of psychology, psychiatry, and education in relation to positive psychology between 2005 and 2015 for which access was permitted. The "Thesis Classification Form" prepared by the researchers was used as a data collection tool. The findings are presented with percentage and frequency tables. The content analysis technique was used for analysis. Studies conducted in the field of positive psychology have increased in recent years. Studies were mostly conducted on the subject of life satisfaction, based on the quantitative method and screening model, in the field of psychology, with university students. The findings obtained in this study will contribute to the work of researchers who study positive psychology. © 2017 Journal of Positive Psychology and Wellbeing. However, knowledge about teacher candidates' mental health during their training process and about their help-seeking behavior can contribute to improving their mental health. Therefore, this study aims at determining the mental state of teacher candidates and elucidating help-seeking behaviors that may be useful for overcoming mental problems. Method: Our sample consisted of 724 prospective teachers studying at the Faculty of Education of Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University in Canakkale; 501 (69.2%) were women, 223 (30.8%) were men. Data were collected using the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and a Sociodemographic Data Form prepared by the researchers. Results: At the end of the study, in 40.6% of the prospective teachers a high severity of distress was detected. The most commonly determined mental symptoms were depression and hostility. The teaching candidates had mostly referred to informal sources, but 39.2% had not sought any help. For mental symptoms, they had mostly sought help informally from their mother or father and siblings, and formally from psychologists or psychiatrists. As factors inhibiting help-seeking, assumed inability of understanding, lack of faith in the possibility of help, and fear of being judged by peers, hesitation to accept help and lack of knowledge about where to look were related to mental symptoms. Conclusions: The study shows the necessity to pay attention to prospective teachers' mental health, promote formal sources, emphasize the role of informal sources like father and siblings, and overcome obstacles in the way of seeking help. It appears that, in the context of prophylactic mental health services, the development of psychological support may be useful in order to increase prospective teachers' mental health.Öğe Social-emotional health in higher education: a psychometric evaluation with Turkish students(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2022) Arslan, Gokmen; Allen, Kelly-Ann; Telef, Bulent Baki; Craig, HeatherThe present study investigated the utility and validity of the Social Emotional Health Survey-Higher Education (SEHS-HE) among Turkish students (N = 345) in higher education. Confirmatory factor analysis found acceptable data-model fit statistics foraprioriSEHS-HE latent measurement models and its second-ordercovitalitylatent construct. The covitality latent construct was associated with higher levels of mental wellbeing, higher academic achievement, and lower levels of psychological symptoms. Findings provided preliminary evidence supporting the use of the SEHS-HE to measure Turkish university students' social-emotional strengths. Research is needed to further evaluate how the SEHS-HE can be used to inform prevention and intervention services on university campuses that aim to improve students' social, emotional, and mental health and wellbeing.Öğe The Adaptation of Psychological Well-Being into Turkish: A Validity and Reliability Study(Hacettepe Univ, 2013) Telef, Bulent BakiThe purpose of this research is to study the psychometrical features of the Turkish form of the psychological well-being scale. The sample of the study includes 529 pre-service teachers, 339 (64%) of whom are females and 190 (36%) of whom are males. As a result of the exploratory factor analysis, it was found that the total explained variance was 42% and that the items were grouped under one factor. For criterion validity, psychological well-being scales and a need satisfaction scale were used. The Pearson product moment correlation between psychological well-being scales and a need satisfaction scale was calculated as .56 and .73 (p<.01). The reliability study indicated that the Cronbach alpha coefficient was .80. According to the test retest results, there was a high level of a positive and meaningful relation between the first and second applications of the scale (r= 0.86, p<.01). This study showed that the psychological well-being scale was a valid and reliable instrument to measure psychological well-being.Öğe The Scale of Positive and Negative Experience: a validity and reliability study for adolescents(Cumhuriyet Univ Tip Fak Psikiyatri Anabilim Dali, 2013) Telef, Bulent BakiObjective: The purpose of this study is to examine the psychometric properties of the Scale of Positive and Negative Experience for adolescences. Methods: This study was conducted with 364 students from several high schools in Izmir. 213 (% 58.5) of these students were male and 151 (% 41.5) were female. The construct validity of the scale was studied by exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. In order to evaluate criteria-dependent validity of the scale, Satisfaction with Life Scale, Life Orientation Test, and Ucla Loneliness Scale were used. To measure the reliability of the scale Cronbach alpha coefficient and test-retest methods were used. In item analysis, the differences between item total correlation and % 27 percent of top and bottom groups' average points were examined. Result: After exploratory factor analysis it was observed that it consists of two factors like the original and the adapted Turkish form which was carried out with university students. Confirmatory factor analysis indicates that the fit indexes are at acceptable level. The correlation analysis study for criteria-dependent validity study of the scale had revealed that there were meaningful relationships. When we look at the Cronbach alpha coefficient, test-retest scores, item total correlation, and t scores of the Scale of Positive and Negative Experience, it can be said that the scale is reliable. Discussion: It can be said that the Scale of Positive and Negative Experience is a valid and reliable scale that can measure positive and negative emotions of the adolescents.
