Öğe Benthic marine litter in the Marmara Sea, Turkey(Ege Univ, Fac Fisheries, 2022) Sirin, Murat; Daban, Ismail Burak; İşmen, Ali; Ihsanoglu, Mukadder ArslanThis study presents the first data on benthic marine litter in the Marmara Sea, Turkey. To obtain the data, bottom trawl surveys were conducted at 34 sites between May 2017 and February 2018. The litter items were sampled and sorted following the MEDITS' relevant instructions. 660 pieces of litter, weighing 434.9 kg, were sampled. The litter density was found to range between 27.5 n/km(2) and 661.2 n/km(2), averaging 73.9 n/km(2), and the obtained items' weights ranged between 0.03 kg/km(2) and 1597.8 kg/km(2), averaging 48.7 kg/km(2). The plastic group L1 constituted 71.7% of the trawled litter. The highest mean litter density was detected in the Northeastern Marmara Sea in the spring and summer of 2018. The mean benthic litter density was found to be higher than the nearby areas. It was concluded that more effort should be invested in reducing marine pollution.Öğe First Record of Caligus zei (Copepoda: Caligidae) on John Dory, Zeus faber in Turkish Marine Waters(Springer Int Publ Ag, 2018) Oktener, Ahmet; Sirin, Murat; İşmen, Ali; Kara, Alparslan; Daban, Burak; Ihsanoglu, Mukadder ArslanThe parasitic copepod, Caligus zei Norman and Scott T., 1906 was found on the John dory (Zeus faber Linnaeus, 1758) during a demersal fish stock assessment in the Sea of Marmara during April 2017. This is the first report of this copepod in Turkish marine waters. Descriptions of the male and female Caligus zei, including details of appendage structure of recovered specimens, are provided.Öğe Population Dynamics and Exploitation Status of Merlangius merlangus (Linnaeus, 1758) in the Sea of Marmara(Springer Int Publ Ag, 2025) Ihsanoglu, Mukadder Arslan; Daban, Ismail Burak; Ismen, Ali; Yigin, Cahide cigdem; Sirin, MuratMerlangius merlangus is a species of notable economic significance. In this study, its population parameters-including length-weight relationships, age structure, growth patterns, and mortality rates-were assessed in the Sea of Marmara. Samples were collected using trawl nets at 34 stations between March 2017 and December 2018. A total of 4,978 specimens were analyzed, with total lengths ranging from 5.0 to 26.7 cm and weights from 2.03 to 167.3 g. The length-weight relationship indicated isometric growth across the population. The length distribution of age-determined individuals were 6.4-24.2 cm in total length. These data were used in the calculation of growth parameters. The estimated asymptotic length (L infinity) was 24.65 cm, the growth coefficient (K) was 0.34 year(-)(1), and the theoretical age at zero length (t(0)) was - 1.27 years. Individuals were aged between 0 and 4 years, and the maximum estimated lifespan (tmax) was 5.5 years. Mortality parameters were also calculated, revealing an exploitation rate (E) of 0.55 per year, suggesting considerable fishing pressure on the stock.
