Öğe Abundance and composition of marine litter around Gokceada Island (Northern Aegean Sea)(Michigan State Univ Press, 2016) Gonulal, Onur; Oz, Idil; Guresen, Sedat Ozan; Ozturk, BayramMarine debris are frequently studied on beaches and occasionally in coastal waters, but links between these two environments have rarely been studied. Litter items were collected by hand in the Gokceada beaches supralittoral zone, consisting of sandy or rocky beaches, and collected from subtidal areas between 50-450m depth range on the continental shelf with bottom trawling. Collected litter were sorted and categorized by type, usage and origin. On the beaches, litter density varied from 0.1 to 22.1 items per 100 m(2). Plastic materials dominated the composition of waste materials (59%) followed by soft plastic, nylon (11.5%). Eight percent of litter was of foreign in origin coming from two countries (Greece and Bulgaria). Offshore, during 32 hauls only 12 items were collected, and the number of debris ranged from 0 to 1.6 items km(-2). Gokceada Island should be further monitored in order to develop regional marine litter management solutions.Öğe Sightings of cetaceans in the Western Antarctic Peninsula during the first joint Turkish-Ukrainian Antarctic Research Expedition, 2016(Tubitak Scientific & Technological Research Council Turkey, 2017) Ozturk, Bayram; Tonay, Mehmet Arda; Oz, Melike Idil; Yilmaz, Izzet Noyan; Ergul, Halim Aytekin; Ozturk, Ayaka AmahaDuring the cetacean surveys of the first Turkish-Ukrainian Antarctic Research Expedition conducted on 5-8 April 2016 in Lemaire Channel, Penola Strait, Flanders Bay, southern Gerlache Strait, and southern Neumayer Channel in the Western Antarctic Peninsula, 74 humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) in 24 sightings and 11 Antarctic minke whales (Balaenoptera bonaerensis) in 6 sightings were recorded. The overall encounter rate (number of sightings/survey effort in nautical miles) was 0.333 (0.266 for humpback whale, 0.066 for Antarctic minke whale). According to the sighting distribution, the Lemaire Channel and Penola Strait are important migration and feeding habitats for whales. Five humpback whales were photo-identified individually by natural features on their flukes; one of them had a match in the Antarctic Humpback Whale Catalogue. The matched individual was first recorded on 30 August 2007 at Salinas, Ecuador.Öğe Wanted dead or alive: Corallium rubrum (Cnidaria: Anthozoa) on the coasts of Turkey(Cahiers De Biologie Marine, 2018) Cinar, Melih Ertan; Gonulal, Onur; Ozturk, BayramThe present paper deals with the occurrence of the red coral Corallium rubrum along the coasts of Turkey. Dead colonies of the species were found in the northern Aegean (one location in Gokceada) and Levantine Seas (three locations) between 45 and 110 m depths, and living colonies were only observed in the northern Aegean Sea (one location in Gokceada) at 50 m depth. The maximum height and basal diameter of dead skeletons of the specimens from Gokceada were measured as 9.6 cm and 8.4 mm, respectively. The present paper extended the distributional range of C. rubrum within the Mediterranean Sea to Anamur, the eastern point in its distribution.
