Öğe Assessment of physical carrying capacity of a mariculture zone designated in the Aegean Sea(Springer, 2024) Yigit, Murat; Ergün, Sebahattin; Buyukates, Yesim; Ates, A. Suat; Ozdilek, H. Goksel; Acar, SecilThe present study was conducted to evaluate the physical carrying capacity in a mariculture zone designated for cage aquaculture in the Aegean Sea (Mersin Bay, Izmir, Turkiye). Rapid assessment of carrying capacity for the approval of new investments or capacity increase requests environment-regulated timely management procedures for the sustainable development of the drastically growing cage aquaculture industry in the Mediterranean. Hence, the mathematical estimations earlier developed for the Mediterranean area have been applied for the carrying capacity assessment using the data gathered from eight fish farms operating in the area. The data collected from the farms comprised the information such as current granted production level, surface area, location depth, current speed, shore distance, and coordinates of the farm sites. The results obtained showed an estimated carrying capacity for the investigated mariculture zone as 252,852 tons which is about 18 times the current production level of 13,500 tons that was granted in total for the sum of eight cage farms in the region with a total of 50.89-ha surface area. It can be concluded that, with the condition of periodic environmental monitoring to keep the marine ecosystem below eutrophication risk, the production capacity of farms in the designated mariculture zone, comprising a surface area of 50.89 ha, could be increased by 18-fold over the present production level, which is far below the risk threshold. The findings of this study provide important support for decision-makers in the management of intensive cage aquaculture operations in the Mediterranean region.Öğe Change in Physical and Chemical Composition of Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas) Eggshells During Embryonic Development(Chelonian Research Foundation, 2011) Yalçın Özdilek, Şükran; Ozdilek, H. KemalThe chemical elements of green turtle (Chelonia mydas) eggshells collected from Samandag Beach (Turkey) were studied to determine differences between elemental composition and changes in physical characteristics. Eggshells from various developmental stages (n = 67), from successfully hatched eggs (n = 25) and infertile eggs (n = 18) were examined using inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy to determine elemental changes during embryonic development. Through the course of egg development, we found changes in concentration of calcium, copper, potassium, sodium, strontium, and zinc but no changes in magnesium.Öğe Relationships of benthic amphipod communities with environmental variables in the shallow waters of the Dardanelles(Walter De Gruyter Gmbh, 2012) Ates, A. Goksel; Berber, Selcuk; Kolsal, Secil; Bircan, CuneytThe structure of the benthic amphipod assemblage and its relationship with soft-bottom characteristics (particle size, organic matter, etc.) of the coastal waters at the depths of 0-5 m at the Dardanelles, including the Turkish Straits System, was studied. A SCUBA diver took benthos and sediment samples seasonally using a quadrate system of 30x30 cm as three transects from the 8 different stations between July 2008 and April 2009. A total of 3007 individuals belonging to 50 species was reported. Among these, Corophium acutum Chevreux, 1908 had the highest dominance value (Di%=22.18) and the lowest dominance value belonged to Dexamine thea Boeck, 1861 (Di%=0.03). The highest positive correlation (r(s)=0.57, p < 0.05) was observed between the gravel content (%) and the abundance (ind. m(-2)). The highest sand rate (99.59%) in the sediment was found at the Eceabat site. The lowest rate was at the Kepez Harbour station with a value of 73.01%. The highest H' value (1.53) was recorded at the Eceabat site, and the lowest H' value (H'=0.95) was recorded at the Gallipoli sampling station.
