Determining the food waste behaviour of consumers in Northwest Turkey: A cross-sectional analysis
(Bologna Univ Press, 2020) Niyaz, Ozge Can; Demirbas, Nevin
The aim of this study was to determine attitudes of consumers in the northwestern part of Turkey towards food waste behaviour. A structural equation model was used to analyze the attitudes and behaviour of consumers to food waste within the framework of the Theory of Planned Behaviour. It was found that food-related planning routines had no effect on food waste behaviour, but that food-related shopping routines encouraged food waste behaviour. On the other hand, the intention not to waste acted to discourage food waste behaviour in consumers. Accordingly, the tendency for consumers to buy more food than they need when shopping leads to an increase in food waste in the household, while the intention not to waste food acts to reduce the amount of waste. Moral attitudes increased the effect of shopping routines while perceived behaviour control had the effect of decreasing it. Intention not to waste was reduced by moral norms and enhanced by subjective norms. Food waste is an ever-increasing problem, but it is preventable. It is recommended that these factors be taken into consideration when developing campaigns, public information notices and workshops about food waste reduction.

Eating habits in terms of gender among Turkish agricultural engineering students: a cross-sectional study
(Mattioli 1885, 2020) Niyaz, Ozge Can
The aim of this study was to examine agricultural engineering students' eating habits and the psychological factors affecting these habits. A cross-sectional survey was conducted of 388 agricultural engineering students (40.5 % female, 59.5 % male), aged 20.5 +/- 1.5 years, chosen randomly. The results of the study showed that the majority of students (63.4 %) were of normal weight (by gender - 70.0 % female, 58.9 % male). The prevalence of pre-obesity and obesity were higher among male students (34.2 % and 4.3 %) than females (10.2 % and 2.0 %) respectively. In contrast, 17.8 % of female students were categorized as underweight, as compared to 2.6 % of the males. With regard to eating habits, the majority of students (78.0 %) were not eating meals regularly. Male students (72.7 %) generally followed more regular meal patterns than female students (86.0 %). On the other hand, female students showed healthier eating habits compared to the males in terms of daily breakfast intake and daily fruit and vegetable consumption. When psychological factors were considered, the majority of students were found to eat more when they are bored and when they are happy. Females reported that they eat more because they are feeling bored or feeling happy (68.2 % and 65.0 % respectively), while figures for male students were significantly lower (41.1 % and 47.2 % respectively). Awareness can be achieved by campus-wide information campaigns and workshops focused on aspects of nutrition.

Evaluation of Agricultural Policy and Practice of Turkey Beef Meat Production and Foreign Trade in Last 25 Years
(Kahramanmaras Sutcu Imam Univ Rektorlugu, 2018) Niyaz, Ozge Can
When nutritional forms of developed societies are examined, it is seen that consumption of animal protein is considerably higher than in undeveloped societies. Sufficient protein consumption is a developmental sign in terms of nutrition. The fact that nations have sufficient nutritional supplements for protein intake is directly related to the agricultural policies and practices of these policies. Animal protein consumption per capita in Turkey lags far behind the developed countries. The main reason for this is that red meat production and foreign trade policies can not be correctly determined or implemented. Red meat producers and consumers are directly affected by these disruptions. Therefore, this study aimed to examine beef production and foreign trade policies implemented in Turkey in the last 25-year. In the study, official reports and data from academic studies were compiled. When the beef production is examined by years, current consumption level looks sufficient. But, meat consumption in Turkey is lower than that of developed countries. Accordingly, for a higher consumption level, the current cattle production is also insufficient. When the foreign trade data are analyzed, it is seen that the beef import started in 2010 has led to an increase in the price level in contrast to the decline in consumer prices in the long term. Increased input costs and imports are the major obstacles to domestic cattle breeders. According to this; it should be made to meet the needs of Turkey's beef with the way the strengthening of policies to support domestic producers. The Meat Fish Authority should expand its meat processing capacity to meet the needs of the population and to play an active role on the market again.

Food Safety Perceptions of Fresh Fruits and Vegetables Consumers
(Univ Namik Kemal, 2018) Niyaz, Ozge Can; Demirbas, Nevin
The objective of this study was to determine the perceptions regarding food safety of the fresh fruits and vegetables consumers in Canakkale. Face to face interviews were carried out with 166 consumers who were determined via Proportional Sampling Method. A Five-Point Likert Scale was used to define the perceptions consumer and Multidimensional Scaling Analysis was used for determining the perception dimensions. Survey results show that half of all the consumers were women. About half of consumers have more than 11 years of education. About 89.2 % of fresh fruits and vegetable consumers have monthly food expenses of 250 Euros or less and 69 % spend 50 Euros or less on fresh fruits and vegetables. As a result of study; consumers are of the opinion that fresh fruits and vegetables include hormones, pesticides, fertilizer remains and Genetically Modified Organisms.

Modeling Turkish Households' Climate Change-Related Behaviors: Theory of Planned Behavior Approach
(Mdpi, 2022) Pouya, Ahmad Samim; Niyaz, Ozge Can
Global environmental problems are both the cause and outcome of human actions. Even though families contribute significantly to the problem, little is known about the reasons for household climate change behavior. Prior research has shown that household intentions and behavior play an essential role in climate change adaptation and mitigation. The goal of this exploratory study was to see how climate change-related factors influenced climate change-related intentions and behaviors. In terms of climate change, Turkey is a vulnerable country in Mediterranean Europe. As a result, the goal of this study is to apply the Theory of Planned Behavior to simulate Turkish households' climate change-related behavior. Using a random sampling method, an online self-reported questionnaire of 400 Turkish households assessed the impact of practices to adapt and mitigate climate change. Within the context of the Theory of Planned Behavior, Structural Equation Modeling was used to examine household attitudes and behaviors about climate change. The findings imply that household intentions are important predictors of climate change-related behavior in Turkey. In addition, subjective norms and perceived behavioral control influence the goals of Turkish households. As a result, efforts should be undertaken to provide households with the subjective and perceptual abilities and tools they need to manage their climate-related activities.

The prevalence of food insecurity among young adults in faculty of agriculture: a cross-sectional case study of Northwest Turkey
(Mattioli 1885, 2020) Niyaz, Ozge Can
Food insecurity is a lack of safe and reliable access to an adequate supply of nutritious food on a daily basis. This pilot study aimed to determine the prevalence of food insecurity and related socio-demographic factors among Turkish agricultural engineering students. A cross-sectional survey design was used, involving a self-reported questionnaire with 388 agricultural engineering students at canakkale Onsekiz Mart University, Turkey. The Na-tional Nutrition Survey and the Household Food Security Survey Module were used in the questionnaire in addi-tion to the students' demographic attributes. Chi-square Independence Tests were used to identify any relationship between sociodemographic characteristics and the food insecurity status of the students. The reported prevalence of food insecurity among Turkish agricultural engineering students is one-third (33.0 %) of the total. It was found that there are significant relationships between food insecurity status and students' year of study, employment sta-tus, grant/credit status and living arrangements. Living and eating conditions for students on campus need to be improved by the provision of low-cost meals, accommodation with basic cooking facilities and food banks.
