Analyzing Content and Information Quality of Instagram® Posts About #teethwhitening
(Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Dentistry, 2023) Buldur, Mehmet; Misilli, Tuğba; Ayan, Gizem
Objectives: Getting information on health issues from social media applications provides autonomy to patients; however, different types of content can lead to the development of inappropriate norms. This study therefore aimed to evaluate the content and information quality of Instagram® posts about teeth whitening. Materials and Methods: The first 100 posts were included in the three search periods, which started in October 2022 and were carried out at two-week intervals. (n=300) The #teethwhitening hashtag, which was determined as a trend topic in each search period, was used. The content of the posts was analyzed over eight questions, whereas their general information quality was analyzed according to the modified DISCERN analysis on seven questions. The demographic data of the posts were evaluated in two parts: a) account and b) data of the post. The distribution of the user questions and other hashtags (#) mentioned in the posts were also analyzed. Data normality checked via the Shapiro Wilk test, then applied Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis, Bonferroni tests, and Spearman correlation as needed for non-normal data. Results: 191 posts were excluded from the research. 42% (n=46) of the posts had “low” information content. In addition, the mean value of the content was 2.77 (min 0, max 8/n=109). The mean score in the modified DISCERN score was 11.83 (min 7, max 35/n=109). 53% (n= 57) of the posts were related either to prosthetic treatments alone or to combined treatments that included prosthetic procedures. Most of the posts mentioned the hashtag "#veneer/s". Questions such as cost, duration of treatment, and appointment procedures were also asked as comments under the posts. Conclusions: It can be stated that the content and information quality of Instagram® posts about #teethwhitening are insufficient and may direct patients to more interventional invasive treatment options.

(2022) Cabadağ, Özge Gizem; Misilli, Tuğba
To examine the color stability of 3 preheated\rcomposite resins immersed in different beverages for 1, 7, and 30 days.\rMaterial and Methods: Ninety disc-shaped specimens were prepared,\r30 specimens from each of three different restorative materials\r[GrandioSO (GSO), GrandioSO x-tra (GSX), VisCalor bulk (VCB)],\rusing 8-mm diameter and 4-mm thickness molds. Each group was divided into 3 subgroups (n=10) to be immersed into beverages (red wine,\rcoffee, and distilled water). The color change values [CIEDE2000\r(?E00)] were calculated at the end of the 1st, 7th, and 30th days. Generalized linear models and multiple comparison tests with Bonferroni correction at a significance level of p<0.05 were performed for the\rcomparisons of ?E00 values. Results: Among all composite and immersion media combinations, at the end of 30 days, the most prominent color change values were observed in the GSX group immersed in\rcoffee and red wine and the VCB group immersed in red wine. For all\rcomposite groups, the lowest color change values were measured after\rimmersion in distilled water in all evaluation periods. All composite\rgroups immersed in red wine showed the color change from the 1st day,\rwhile those exposed to coffee from the 7th day, above the clinically acceptable values. Conclusion: The color change values of preheated\rresin-based composites kept in coffee and red wine were affected by the\rproperties of the immersion solution and storage times rather than the\rtype of the material.

Cross-cultural adaptation of the Turkish version of the dentin hypersensitivity experience questionnaire short form (DHEQ-15)
(BMC, 2024) Ayan, Gizem; Misilli, Tuğba; Buldur, Mehmet
Background The short form of the Dentin Hypersensitivity Experience Questionnaire (DHEQ-15) is a valid and reliable tool for Oral Health-Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) studies. The aim of this study was cross-culturally adapt and validate the English version of DHEQ-15 for the Turkish language. Methods The Turkish version of the DHEQ-15 was developed using the forward-backward translation method. Two independent translators translated it from English to Turkish, followed by back-translation into English. A pilot study was conducted with 30 patients with dentin hypersensitivity (DH). The sample consisted of 150 individuals with DH and 150 without. DH was assessed using the Schiff Sensitivity Scale by applying air to the cervical area of the tooth for 1 s from a distance of 1 cm. A total of 300 individuals completed the Turkish DHEQ-15 in the waiting room. Subsequently, 30 randomly selected individuals with DH completed the questionnaire again after 7–10 days to assess test-retest reliability. Participants provided an overall oral health rating assessment on a 6-point scale. The reliability of the DHEQ-15 was assessed using internal consistency and test-retest methods. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) identified its domains, while construct validity was evaluated through cross-cultural (Confirmatory Factor Analysis- CFA), discriminative (Mann-Whitney test) and convergent (Spearman correlation) validity. Results The demographic characteristics of the sample included 137 men and 163 women, with an average age of 36. The Turkish DHEQ-15 demonstrated excellent internal consistency (α = 0.970) and outstanding test-retest reliability (r = 0.920, p < 0.001), indicating an excellent correlation. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the unidimensional scale structure of the Turkish DHEQ-15 (p = 0.000). A statistically significant negative correlation was found between the DHEQ-15 score and the overall oral health rating assessment (p < 0.05). Participants with DH had a significantly higher DHEQ-15 score compared to those without DH (p < 0.001). Conclusions This study provides evidence supporting the cross-cultural validity and reliability of the Turkish DHEQ-15.

Effects of Detox Juices on Color Stability and Surface Roughness of Universal Chromatic Resin Composites
(Operative Dentistry Inc, 2025) Yenidünya, O. G.; Misilli, Tuğba
This study investigated the color stability and surface roughness of universal chromatic resin-based composites (RBCs) after immersion in detox juices. One hundred seventy-six disc-shaped specimens (8 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness) were prepared using four universal chromatic RBCs: NeoSpectra ST (NS), Omnichroma (OM), Charisma Topaz One (CO), and G-ae nial Universal Injectable (GI). Specimens of each material were randomly divided into four subgroups (n=11) and immersed in either the assigned detox juices (red, green, or yellow) or distilled water (control). Color and surface roughness measurements were taken at baseline, 15 and 30 days of immersion. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to evaluate the surface topography of the composites. The color change [CIEDE2000 (Delta E00)] and surface roughness (Ra) values were analyzed using generalized linear models and multiple comparison tests with Bonferroni correction. Correlation analysis was performed using Spearman rank correlation test. The main variable effects of composite and immersion media were significant for both color change and surface roughness parameters (p<0.001). Additionally, the main effect of the evaluation period was significant only for surface roughness (p=0.001). The highest discoloration occurred in the GI group immersed in a red beverage, while the CO group immersed in yellow beverage had the highest Ra values. In SEM analysis, OM demonstrated a more homogeneous filler structure with clearly visible nano-spherical fillers and nanoclusters, contributing to its superior smoothness. Conversely, a significant increase in rough areas was observed, especially in NS exposed to the green beverage and CO exposed to the yellow beverage, after 30 days. While the immersion of resin composites in detox juices induced an acceptable color alteration except for OM and GI groups immersed in the red beverage, all tested materials exhibited clinically admissible results regarding surface roughness.

Effects of high temperature on dental restorative materials for forensic purposes
(Springer, 2021) Çarıkçıoglu, Burak; Misilli, Tuğba; Deniz, Yeşim; Aktaş, Çağatay
This study aimed to observe the efects of high temperature on diferent restorative dental materials by detecting changes in their microstructural and elemental composition. Disk shaped samples (10 mm diameter, 2 mm depth) were prepared from 8 dental materials (compomer, glass carbomer, ormocer, giomer, zinc reinforced glass ionomer (GI), silver-alloy reinforced GI, zirconia reinforced GI, and conventional GI). Scanning electron microscopy/Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) was used to characterize sample surface structures and elemental composition. The same samples were also analyzed using X-ray fuorescence (XRF) to determine the trace element content. Each sample was placed in a porcelain furnace and exposed to 900 °C for 30 min. Observations of macroscopic changes in samples after exposure high temperature were recorded. The microstructural changes in sample surfaces after incineration were detected by SEM. The elemental compositions obtained before and after the incineration were compared after repeating the XRF and EDS analyses. Dental materials demonstrated specifc macroscopic changes and microstructural deteriorations detected by SEM images after exposure to high temperature. While several changes occurred in the elemental content of materials in terms of amount, the original elemental composition was preserved. The ability to distinguish dental materials by elemental analyses has had an important impact on the identifcation process.

Effects of radiotherapeutic X-ray irradiation on cervical enamel
(Taylor and Francis Ltd., 2021) Deniz, Yeşim; Aktaş, Çağatay; Misilli, Tuğba; Çarıkçıoğlu, Burak
Purpose Therapeutic radiation used for head and neck cancers mainly affects the cervical region of the tooth. To better understand the impact of therapeutic radiation on tooth, we aimed to examine the crystallinity, micro-morphology, and elemental composition of the cervical inner enamel located adjacent to the dento-enamel junction. Materials and methods Ninety-one specimens obtained from 16 impacted third mandibular molars were randomly divided into seven groups (0, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 Gy irradiation groups). Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed after the irradiation by 6 MV photon energy. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) were conducted in every group before and after irradiation. Elemental compositions, and Ca/P, P/N, Ca/N atomic ratios were subjected to the Shapiro-Wilk normality test. All of the elements except Mg showed a normal distribution and were compared by the one-way ANOVA. The non-normally distributed Mg data and Ca/P, P/N, and Ca/N ratios were compared by the Kruskal-Wallis test. Results The results showed that widening in the interprismatic spaces were observed in the experimental groups subjected to 30 Gy and the following increased doses. In addition, there were no significant differences in C, O, Ca, P, N percentages between irradiated and non-irradiated groups (p > .05). An increase in atomic ratio of the Mg was detected after samples conducted by 60 Gy radiation dose (p < .05). The stoichiometric Ca/P, Ca/N, and P/N atomic ratios did not change by irradiation (p > .05). The XRD peaks of the inner enamel crystalline phase showed a slight decline in the 60 Gy radiation dose group. Conclusion Radiation effects begin to be seen after 30 Gy radiation dose groups. The widen interprismatic spaces seen obviously in 50 Gy and 60 Gy dose groups. Besides Mg ratio showed an increase in the 60 Gy dose group. But it should be thought that radiation caries is a multi-factorial disease that is in collaboration with various radiation-induced side effects.

Effects of staining and bleaching procedures on the optical and surface properties of CAD-CAM materials
(Mosher & Linder, Inc, 2023) Yenidünya, Özge Gizem; Gönülol, Niran; Misilli, Tuğba; Bal, Lena; İnanç, İbrahim
Purpose: To examine the effects of coffee staining and bleaching applications on the optical properties of CAD-CAM blocks, and to provide a three-dimensional visualization of surface changes with atomic force microscope (AFM). Methods: 80 samples were prepared from four different CAD-CAM blocks: [Cerec (CR), Shofu (SH), Cerasmart (CRS), Lava Ultimate (LU)], and a microhybrid composite resin [Filtek Z250 (Z250)]. After staining, the samples were divided into two subgroups according to bleaching methods: 16% carbamide peroxide (HB), and 40% hydrogen peroxide (OB). Color measurements were performed at baseline (t₀), after staining (t₁), and after bleaching (t₂) to obtain translucency parameters (TP₀₀), color change (ΔE₀₀), and whiteness index (WID) values. Surface roughness analysis (Ra) was performed with AFM after coffee staining and bleaching procedures (at t₁ and t₂). Data were analyzed with Generalized Linear Model, and Bonferroni correction (P< 0.05). Results: TP₀₀ values increased only in the CRS group after the bleaching application, and the effect of method was again observed only in CRS. While bleaching increased WID values of all groups except CRS, no difference was found between bleaching methods. Regardless of evaluation time, the roughest group is Z250, and the only difference between bleaching methods was observed in the CR group. In conclusion, the effects of staining and bleaching applications on the optical and surface properties of CAD-CAM blocks are material-dependent. Clinical significance: Effective bleaching of discolored CAD-CAM materials was achieved regardless of the bleaching method used, and without any significant adverse effect on the surface properties of the materials.

(Bmc, 2025) Yenidünya, Özge Gizem; Misilli, Tuğba; Yılmaz, Ebru
BackgroundTo evaluate surface microhardness, roughness, and gloss changes of tooth-colored restorative materials [a direct composite (G-aenial A'Chord), an indirect composite (Gradia Plus), an ormocer (Admira Fusion), a giomer (Beautifil II), and an alkasite (Cention N)] after exposure to simulated gastric acid.MethodsA total of 110 disc-shaped specimens (22 discs of each material) were prepared using silicone molds (8 mmx2 mm) and exposed to either gastric acid or artificial saliva (control). Surface roughness (Ra), gloss (GU), and microhardness (VHN) were measured at baseline and after 96-hour of immersion in the solutions and the respective changes (triangle Ra, triangle GU, triangle VHN) were calculated. Intergroup comparisons were performed using ANOVA (Tukey post hoc) or Kruskal-Wallis tests (Bonferroni correction). Independent samples t-test or Mann-Whitney U test was used for comparisons of each material across immersion media, while paired t-test was applied for time-dependent analyses.ResultsIn the gastric acid medium, changes in all parameters led to significant differences among restorative materials, while in the artificial saliva medium, significant differences were observed in triangle VHN and triangle GU. The statistically significant difference between immersion media was observed in both triangle VHN and triangle Ra values for the giomer group, and in only triangle VHN values for the alkasite and indirect composite groups. In the gastric acid medium, the decrease in VHN and GU values was significant across all subgroups, while the increase in Ra was statistically significant only in the giomer and alkasite groups.ConclusionsWhile the giomer group exhibited the most significant changes in roughness and microhardness following exposure to gastric acid, all tested materials executed clinically admissible results regarding surface gloss.Clinical trial numberNot applicable.

(Springer Heidelberg, 2025) Ayan, Gizem; Misilli, Tuğba; Buldur, Mehmet
Objectives This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of home-use desensitizing agents over an 8-week period by comparing them using different measurement methods. Methods A randomized, controlled clinical trial was conducted with 180 individuals aged between 18 and 70 who clinically diagnosed dentin hypersensitivity (DH) in two or more non-adjacent teeth. Subjects who met the inclusion criteria (n = 164) were randomly allocated into five test groups-using Casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP), Arginine, Novamin, Propolis, and Potassium nitrate-and a control group using standard fluoride toothpaste. The status of DH was assessed at week 4 and week 8 by the same independent examiner. Changes from baseline in Dentine Hypersensitivity Experience Questionnaire-15 (DHEQ-15), Schiff Sensitivity Scale (SSS) and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) were analysed using ANOVA and Kruskall-Wallis tests. Results All test groups showed statistically significant improvements in DH at weeks 4 and 8 compared to baseline in the DHEQ-15, VAS, and SSS assessments (p < 0.005). In the control group, significant improvements were observed only in the VAS and SSS measurements from baseline to weeks 8 (p < 0.005). The CPP-ACP group demonstrated the greatest reduction in scores by the end of week 8 compared to baseline, with DHEQ-15 (56.68 +/- 17.87), VAS (6.52 +/- 1.48), and SSS (2.32 +/- 0.56). Conclusions Among the tested agents, the CPP-ACP group demonstrated the most notable reduction in DH symptoms by week 8, highlighting its potential as an effective method for alleviating DH symptoms in a home-use agents. Clinical relevance Home-use desensitizing agents are effective in the treatment of DH, improving the daily activities of patients who cannot access clinical care and ensuring the relief of DH before clinical invasive procedures. In-vivo evaluation of the effects of short-term dehydration and rehydration on the color differences of immature permanent incisor teeth
(Wiley, 2024) Buldur, Mehmet; Misilli, Tuğba; Sezer, Berkant
Objective: It is aimed to evaluate the color changes of upper central incisor teeth with different root maturation levels after 15 min of dehydration and rehydration. Materials and Methods: Using the Cvek classification, 60 participants were divided into five groups. A spectrophotometer, equipped with a specially designed jig, was utilized for color measurements. Following isolation, color measurements were conducted at the dehydration process intervals of baseline, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 10th, and 15th minutes. After mouth rinsing, measurements were repeated at the same time intervals during the rehydration process. CIEDE2000 (Delta E-00) values and the Whiteness Index (WID) were obtained to compare the color changes between the initial readings and each interval. Friedman and Repeated Measures ANOVA were applied to compare classes by time during the dehydration and rehydration periods, as well as ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests to compare by classes for each time (p < 0.05). Results: Significant differences emerged in the mean Delta E-00 values during dehydration and rehydration periods across all Cvek Classes (p < 0.05). While no statistically significant differences were observed among Classes at different minutes during the rehydration period (p > 0.05), it was particularly noted that the mean Delta E-00 values of Classes 2, 3, and 5 at the 2nd minute of dehydration were statistically significantly higher than the mean of Class 1 (p < 0.05). However, when evaluating the starting and ending measurements of both dehydration and rehydration processes, and the overall change in Delta E-00 and Delta WID, no significant variations were detected across the Classes (p > 0.05). Conclusions: In teeth that have just erupted and are still undergoing root development, dehydration in the initial minutes results in noticeable color changes. However, the change in Delta E-00 and Delta WID of the teeth was found to be similar after the dehydration and rehydration processes.

Investigation of the effect of indirect pulp capping materials on dentin mineral density
(Piracicaba Dental School - UNICAMP, 2023) Misilli, Tuğba; Uslu, Gülşah; Orhan, Kaan; Bayrakdar, İbrahim Şevki; Erdönmez, Demet; Özyürek, Taha
Aim: To evaluate the potential of inducing mineral density changes of indirect pulp capping materials applied to demineralized dentin. Methods: A total of 50 cavities were prepared, 5 in each tooth, in extracted ten molars without caries, impacted or semi-embedded. The cavities were scanned by microcomputed tomography (μ-CT) after creating artificial caries by microcosm method (pre-treatment). Each cavity was subjected to one of 5 different experimental conditions: control (dental wax), conventional glass ionomer cement (Fuji IX GP Extra), resin-modified calcium silicate (TheraCal LC), resin-modified calcium hydroxide (Ultra-Blend Plus), MTA (MM-MTA) and the samples were kept under intrapulpal pressure using simulated body fluid for 45 days. Then, the second (μ-CT) scan was performed (post-treatment), and the change in dentin mineral density was calculated. Afterward, elemental mapping was performed on the dentinal surfaces adjacent to the pulp capping agents of 5 randomly selected samples using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) apparatus attached to a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The Ca/P ratio by weight was calculated. Friedman test and Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test were used to analyze the data. Results: There was a significant increase in mineral density values of demineralized dentin after treatment for all material groups (p<0.05). Resin-modified calcium silicate had similar efficacy to MTA and conventional glass ionomer cement, but was superior to resin-modified calcium hydroxide in increasing the mineral density values of demineralized dentin. Conclusions: Demineralized dentin tissue that is still repairable can be effectively preserved using materials with remineralization capability.

Micro-coMputed toMographic assessMent of the influence of light-curing Modes on internal void forMation in bulk-fill coMposites
(Polish Dental Association, 2024) Yenidünya, Özge Gizem; Misilli, Tuğba; Ocak, Mert
Introduction: Polymerization reactions in a new generation bulk-fill composites carried out in a short time with high irradiation, raise concerns about curing processes. With micro-computed tomographic evaluation, it is possible to investigate polymerization shrinkage, and subsequent gap and void formation in dental materials. Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate the void formation in bulk-fill composites light-cured with different modes using micro-computed tomography. Material and methods: Class I preparations were made in 25 molars that were randomly divided into subgroups, according to resin composite and curing mode used: Tetric EvoCeram (TEC)*high power mode, TEC*turbo mode, Tetric PowerFill (TPF)*high power mode, TPF*turbo mode, and TPF*3s mode. Each tooth was scanned at two time intervals: pre- and post-cure. Results: After light-curing, a significant increase in the total volume of internal void was noted for both composites cured with high power mode compared with pre-cure. The difference between the sub-groups at post-cure was also significant. While TEC exhibited similar values in terms of different curing modes, turbo and 3s modes caused a significant difference in TPF group, and the lowest void percentage was detected in 3s mode. Conclusions: Internal void formation results from an interplay of different factors, including composition of materials and curing modes.

Objective: This study aimed to compare surface roughness values (Ra) of different posterior composites after pH-cycling and toothbrushing simulation. Methods: Fifty disc-shaped specimens (8x2 mm) were prepared by using three bulk-fill composites [Filtek Bulk Fill Posterior (FBF), SonicFill 2 (SF), X-tra fil (XF)], a flowable [G-aenial Universal Flo (GF)], and a microhybrid composite [Filtek Z250 (Z250)]. After initial roughness (Ra0 ) measurements were performed with a contact profilometer, the samples were subjected to a pH-cycling model for 10 days and Ra1 values were recorded. Then, the samples were subjected to toothbrushing simulation for 4 min and final values (Ra2 ) were recorded. From each group, a representative sample was analyzed with an optical profilometer. The values were analyzed by two-way ANOVA with repeated measures on one factor (period) followed by Tukey’s test (p<0.05). Results: Significant differences were found among materials regardless of experimental periods. The lowest Ra values were determined in GF and Z250 groups. The highest value was obtained in SF, but this value was not statistically significant different from that obtained in XF group. Brushing procedure after chemical degradation led to an increase in surface roughness of all materials except FBF, which was not statistically significant. Conclusion: While Ra values showed differences depending on the materials, pH-cycling and toothbrushing simulation did not have a significant effect on these values.
