Barriers, vaccine hesitancy and attitudes towards the to the covid-19 vaccine in Türkiye
(Holistence Publications, 2024) Yalçın Gürsoy, Melike; Mechmet, Fatme Chousko
This study aimed to determine the barriers, vaccine hesitancy and attitudes towards the to the COVID-19 vaccine in Türkiye. A cross-sectional study included 2031 people aged 18 years and older living in Türkiye. Data were collected through an online questionnaire created by the researchers in line with the literature and the Attitudes towards the COVID-19 Vaccine (ATV-COVID-19) scale. In total, 1043 participants (51.4%) defined themselves as vaccine hesitant. The most-motivating factor for vaccination was protecting self and family, while thinking that vaccines are unsafe was the most common barrier against vaccination. Compared to females, being male (OR=0.770) had a 1.3-times (1/0.770) protective effect from vaccination hesitancy, while one unit increase in the ATV-COVID-19 score (OR=0.080) was 12.5-times (1/0.080) protective. As a result of the study, it was observed that there was a high level of vaccine hesitancy due to mistrust of COVID-19 vaccines or fear of side effects. In addition, vaccine hesitancy was associated with gender and the level of attitude towards the vaccine.

Childhood traumas among nursing students and associated factors
(W.B. Saunders Co-Elsevier, Inc., 2023) Mechmet, Fatme Chousko; Yalçın Gürsoy, Melike
The present study aimed to determine the level of childhood traumas among nursing students and to identify the factors associated with these traumas. This was a cross-sectional study, including 1810 nursing students studying at the nursing department of any university in Turkey. The data were collected using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire and an online questionnaire consisting of questions related to sociodemographic characteristics. The results of these questionnaires indicated that the level of childhood traumas was low among nursing students and that they had experienced emotional neglect more frequently than sexual abuse. Moreover, this study identified possible factors associated with childhood trauma among these students.Practice implications: Nursing students with a history of trauma or current trauma can be guided to participate in activities that improve their resilience. In addition, specific courses may be included in the nursing education curriculum to increase the awareness on this topic among these students.

Correlations between childhood trauma and depression, anxiety, and stress levels in nurses
(W.B. Saunders Co-Elsevier, Inc., 2023) Yalçın Gürsoy, Melike; Mechmet, Fatme Chousko
Aims: This study aims to determine correlations between childhood trauma and depression, anxiety, and stress levels in nurses. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among nurses in Turkey from August to September 2022. A total of 395 nurses were included in the study. Data were collected through an online survey using a personal information form, the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ-28), and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS 21).Results: The mean score of the CTQ-28 total scale was 51.6, and emotional neglect was the most common type of abuse. The prevalence of moderate-to-extremely severe depression, anxiety, and stress was 34.7 %, 42.2 %, and 18.3 %, respectively. Emotional abuse and emotional neglect subscales of the CTQ were independently related to all three DASS subscale scores. Conclusion: This study revealed that the emotional abuse and neglect experienced in childhood are related to the nurses' current stress, anxiety, and depression levels.

Nursing students' attitudes toward reporting child abuse and neglect: A cross-sectional study in Turkey
(John Wiley and Sons Inc, 2023) Yalçın Gürsoy, Melike; Mechmet, Fatme Chousko
Topic: Nurses are uniquely positioned to provide early diagnoses and interventions for abused, neglected, or at-risk children. They are also required, by law, to report suspected child abuse. However, little is known about the attitudes of student and registered nurses in reporting cases of abuse. Purpose: This study aimed to identify nursing students' attitudes and related factors toward reporting child abuse and neglect in Turkey. Sources: This cross-sectional study was carried out with the online participation of 1170 nursing students. The scale for determining the attitudes of health professionals in reporting child abuse (ACAS) was administered together with questions on demographic information. Conclusions: ACAS scores of nursing students toward reporting child abuse were average. Younger age, poor perceived academic success, suspecting of a child abuse and neglect case during clinical practice, and male sex were independently associated with higher ACAS scores. Therefore, education programs for nursing students should focus on improving their attitudes toward reporting child abuse and neglect.

Nursing Students' Attitudes Toward the Elderly: A Systematic Review Based on Studies Conducted in Turkiye
(Istanbul University, 2023) Yalçın Gürsoy, Melike; Mechmet, Fatme Chousko
The older population is increasing rapidly in the world and this increase brings along problems that need to be solved due to old age. Ageism, which is one of these problems, is a stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination against people on the basis of their age. Ageism has serious negative consequences for older people's health and well-being. Nursing is one of the main professions to care for older people and nursing students will be potential members of this profession in the future. For this reason, it is important to know nursing students' attitudes toward ageism and the factors affecting it. This study aims to determine nursing students' attitudes toward older adults by examining studies conducted in Turkiye. The review was conducted between September and November 2021 using search databases of Google Academics, PubMed, ProQuest, and Turkey Citation Index. In the search, the keywords nursing students, attitude towards elderlies, elderly discrimination, ageism, and Turkey were used in different combinations in Turkish and English. Of the 5,443 studies identified at baseline, 35 were included in the study. The sample of the studies consisted of 10,636 nursing students. In the studies reviewed, the Ageism Attitude Scale (AAS), the Kogan's Attitudes Toward Old People Scale (Kogan OP Scale), and the UCLA Geriatrics Attitudes (UCLA-GA) scale were used to assess ageism. According to the results of this systematic review, nursing students' attitudes toward the elderly were mostly positive, and various factors were associated with these attitudes. It is recommended to include courses on elderly health in the nursing undergraduate curriculum, to carry out projects to increase interaction with the elderly, and to conduct experimental studies aiming to demonstrate the effectiveness of various interventions to increase positive attitudes.

Vaccination coverage and related factors among the elderly: A cross-sectional study from Turkey
(John Wiley and Sons Inc, 2022) Yalçın Gürsoy, Melike; Tanrıverdi, Gülbu; Özsezer, Gözde; Mechmet, Fatme Chousko
Objective: The study was conducted to determine the vaccination rates and related factors among the elderly. Design: Cross-sectional study. Sample: This study was conducted with 984 elderly people living in a province in western Turkey. Measurements: The single-stage cluster sampling method was used in the sample selection. The descriptive statistics, the chi-square analysis, the Mann–Whitney U test and the logistic regression analysis for the multivariate analysis were used to evaluate the data. Results: It was determined that 45.6% of the elderly were vaccinated after the age of 65 and the most frequently administered vaccines were influenza (41.3%), pneumococcal (10.9%), and tetanus (5.5%) vaccines. Higher vaccination rates were determined in the following demographics, namely by 1.8-fold (95% CI, 1.4–2.4) in those living in urban areas, by 2.6-fold (95% CI, 1.8–3.9) in those with high school or higher education, by 1.5-fold (95% CI, 1.0–2.5) in those who did not work, by 1.7-fold (95% CI, 1.3–2.3) in those with chronic diseases and by 2-fold (95% CI, 1.1–3.4) in those who fulfilled their physical own needs themselves. Conclusion: This study showed that more than half of the elderly did not receive any vaccinations in old age. The vaccination rates of the elderly were associated with many factors.
