Investigation of the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on employees' psychological symptoms and nutritional habits
    (Mattioli 1885, 2021) Kanbur, Savaş
Background: It is anticipated that the fear caused by the possible consequences of Covid-19 virus transmission and the sense of restraint caused by control applications such as quarantine may affect individuals', especially employees' psychological parameters and change their habits. Objectives: The aim of this study is explaining the effect of pandemic conditions and precautionary practices on the psychological parameters and nutritional habits of employees. Methods: In this direction, The SCL-90-R test, which was applied to 400 office workers before the pandemic, was reapplied during the pandemic period and the differences between the psychological symptoms were evaluated statistically. In addition, a mini questionnaire was applied on the change of daily nutritional habits after the pandemic. Results: In the period of pandemic compared to before the pandemic; a definite statistical difference was determined in somatization, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, phobic anxiety, paranoid, and general symptom index symptoms. In addition, an acceptable difference was found for the increase in symptoms of paranoid ideation and obsessive-compulsive, and there was no statistical difference only in symptoms of hostility and psychoticism. In addition, it was found that the majority of the participants experienced a change in their daily eating methods. Conclusion: The increase in almost all of the psychological parameters is not evidence of psychological diseases. However, according to the average results, the parameters closest to evaluation as a problem comply with the observed behaviors in pandemic conditions. The change in nutrition methods is also thought to be a reflection of the psychological factors that changed during the pandemic period.

Investigation of the effect of electromagnetic field exposure in the working environment on ovarian follicles
(Parlar Scientific Publications, 2021) Kanbur, Savaş; Önger, Mehmet Emin
This study aims to investigate the effect of electromagnetic field (EMF) exposure which is environmental toxic agent on ovarian follicles. A total of 30 female Wistar albino rats are randomly divided into three groups (n=10) as Control, Sham, and EMF groups. The rats are not exposed any processes in Control group. The rats are kept in special cage for the same duration as in the EMF group without any EMF exposure in Sham group while the rats are exposed to 900 MHz EMF with a special mechanism in EMF group. At the end of day 28, the ovarian tissues are collected. Stereological and biochemical examinations are performed. Concerning the GSI values, there are statistical differences between the Control and EMF (p=0.001), and Sham and EMF (p=0.001) groups, respectively. There are also statistical differences between Control and EMF groups in terms of volumetric parameters including medullary, and follicular antral volumes. Regarding the biochemical parameters, there are statistically differences between the Control and EMF (p=0.000), and Sham and EMF (p=0.000) groups, respectively. It may be concluded that exposure to a 900-MHz EMF leads to changes in ovarian follicle volumes which may affect the ovarian reservoir.

Side chain functional carbazole-fluorene electroactive polymers: Optical, electrochemical properties, antimicrobial activity and thin film morphologies
(John Wiley and Sons Inc, 2021) Meriç, Çağla; Kanbur, Savaş; Baycan, Fatma
A new electroactive polymer based on fluorene and carbazole moieties with double bond side chain (MP25) was synthesized and then double bond at the side chain was functionalized with -COOH and -Si(OEt)3 as ITO/glass compatible groups. Electrochemical and optical properties of the polymers were elucidated with cyclic voltammetry (CV), ultraviolet–visible absorption (UV–Vis), and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy. It was observed that all polymers absorbed only the UV region and emitted blue light. By using CV, HOMO values were found as approximately 5.45 eV. According to AFM results, when the rough MP25 polymer thin film was modified with ITO/glass compatible groups, more uniform and smoother polymer thin films were obtained. Thermogravimetry analyses (TGA) shown that the MP25-Si and MP25-COOH were stable against thermo-oxidative decomposition. The weight loss of MP-25-Si was found to be only %23 at 700°C. Additionally, antimicrobial activity of MP25 polymers was also investigated. According to test results, all polymers were found to have antimicrobial activity against C.albicans.

The Effect of Chronic Intermittent Cold Exposure on Gastrin-, Somatostatin-, Secretin-, and Serotonin-Containing Cells in the Small Intestine of Rats
(Springer, 2021) Yıldız, Mustafa; Büyük, Başak; Kanbur, Savaş
Stress is counted among the reasons of many diseases. Exposure to cold is one of the stimulants that leads to stress. No study has been found in the literature showing how the enteroendocrine cells in the small intestine are affected by cold stress. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the structural changes and the densities of gastrin, somatostatin, secretin and serotonin immunoreactive cells in the small intestines of rats exposed to cold. The rats were randomly divided into two groups as control and cold stress. Exposure to cold was performed as 6 hours once a day for 14 days. At the end of the experiment; duodenum, jejunum and ileum samples were taken from small intestines. For histopathological examination, hemotoxylin-eosin staining method was applied to tissue sections. In addition; gastrin, somatostatin, secretin and serotonin immunoreactive cells were detected in small intestine immunohistochemically. The numbers of gastrin, secretin and serotonin immunoreactive cells in all parts of the small intestine, as well as the number of somatostatin immunoreactive cells in ileum significantly decreased in the cold stress group compared to the control group. Besides, it was found that mucosal inflammation, edema, and villus atrophy increased in the small intestine due to exposure to cold. As a conclusion, cold stress causes structural disorders in the small intestine. Also, it reduces the populations of enteroendocrine cells containing gastrin, somatostatin, secretin and serotonin. Thus, cold stress might play a role in the pathogenesis of some intestinal diseases by adversely affecting digestive physiology.

Thiophene-benzimidazolium Polymer Salts: Synthesis, Characterization, Antimicrobial Activities, and Evaluation in Terms of Occupational Health
(Polymer Society of Korea, 2021) Kanbur, Savaş; Ateş, Gülçin Özcan; Altınışık, Sinem; Çınar, Ulaş; Baycan, Fatma
A new thiophene benzimidazole based polymer (TBIP) was synthesized and then the TBIP-Br, TBIP-BF4 and TBIP-ClO4 polymer salts were obtained in water. All polymer salts can be dissolved in environmentally friendly solvents such as water or ethanol. Electrochemical and optical properties of the polymers were elucidated with cyclic voltammetry (CV) and ultraviolet-visible absorption (UV-Vis) spectroscopy. By using CV, the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) values were found as approximately 1.70 eV. According to the atomic force microscopy (AFM) images of the thin film of TBIP, there are homogeneously distributed and smaller particles on the film surface, while the surface of TBIP-Br and TBIP-ClO4 thin films is rougher due to -Br and -ClO4 counter ions being bigger than -BF4. Additionally, the antimicrobial activity of TBIP polymers was also investigated. All TBIP and its salts were showed antimicrobial activity against S. aureus ATCC 6538 and no antimicrobial activity against E. coli ATCC 1301 and ATCC 25922.
