Öğe A Study on Preferred Learning Styles of Turkish EFL Teacher Trainees(Edith Cowan Univ, 2015) Inal, Sevim; Buyukyavuz, Oya; Tekin, MustafaSince people have different ways of perception, levels of motivation, and attitudes towards teaching and learning they consistently differ from each other in their preferences of learning and acquiring knowledge. Therefore, the more instructors understand the differences, the better chance they have of understanding and meeting the diverse learning needs of their students. The present study has been conducted to investigate the Turkish ELT students' learning style preferences in relation to gender and age to see if there is any relationship between achievement and learning style preferences. To perform the aim of the study Wintergerst and DeCapua's (1999) learning style indicator (LSI) was administered on 249 English trainees. To find the male and female students' learning style preference differences separately, t-test was utilized. The result indicated that Turkish students are mostly group-oriented learners and learn best through interacting with other students while learning. Gender also varies according to the three orientation areas under investigation. In the current study, no relation between achievement and learning style has been identified.Öğe English Trainees' Opinions on Professional Development and Pre-Service Education(Hacettepe Univ, 2013) Inal, Sevim; Buyukyavuz, OyaThe purpose of the present study is twofold; it finds out Turkish EFL teacher trainees' opinions and perceptions of their pre-service education, and explores how the trainees will improve themselves and catch up the latest development once they become teachers. Bu çalışmanın bulguları, alandaki benzer araştırmaların sonuçlarını desteklemektedirÖğe Representations of Female Characters in the Works of Halide Edip Adivar and George Bernard Shaw: A Comparative Literature Study(Istanbul Univ, 2022) Bayraktar, Yasemin; Inal, Sevim; Tunaboylu, OyaIn this study, the similarities between the world view of Halide Edip Adivar and George Bernard Shaw, the reflections of these similarities on their understanding of art, themes of their works and the role of their heroines, will be discussed. Therefore, this study investigates the attitudes of university teachers towards the use of L1 and seek their opinions regarding the purposes for which L1 should be used in English classes. A questionnaire of 27 items with a five-point likert-type scale was administered, followed by a face-to face semi-structured interview. Descriptive and content analysis methods were employed. The results show that the use of L1 in L2 classes has facilitating functions in L2 learning environment and teachers do not perceive L1 as a hindering factor at the early stages of English learning; they also believe that L1 should be used with low-proficiency level students when making students aware of the differences and similarities between L1 and L2, explaining new vocabulary, clarifying difficult concepts, solving disciplinary problems and teaching grammar. The teachers’ overall attitude towards using L1 was found to be slightly negative in line with the results of the questionnaire yet contradicted with those of the interview.
