Öğe Being a ‘Stalker’ in a World Imposing ‘Normalcy’: An Existentialist and Queer Analysıs Of Tarkovsky’s Stalker(Tekirdag Namik Kemal University, 2023) Gezgin, ElifThis article examines the commonalities between Tarkovsky’s cinema, existentialism, and queer theory in terms of their positions towards exclusion from the accepted ‘normal’ definitions of society. Within this framework, the terms like ‘weakness’, ‘failure’, and ‘impotency’ are explored and Tarkovsky’s, existentialism’s, and queer theory’s interpretations of these concepts are elaborated. Thus, Stalker is analyzed via an intersectional approach using some sociological and philosophical tools. The queerness of the main character, the Stalker—as well as the queerness of naivety and being a loser in general—is discussed and the discussion is conducted via a critical approach to society’s criterion of ‘success’. The paper discusses the complex relationships between existentialism and power relations through the film and draws attention once again to the sociological and philosophical power of Tarkovsky’s cinema and its success in touching on the daily life and daily anxieties of ordinary human beingsÖğe Between Privileges and Sacrifices: Heteronormativity and Turkish Nationalism in Urban Turkey(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2023) Gezgin, ElifThis paper examines the relation between nationalism and heteronormativity through the lens of hegemonic masculinity and shows how Turkish nationalism helps to construct the normal and thus strengthen heteronormative thinking in Turkish society. Utilizing in-depth interviews in Canakkale with 16 men who carry the typical features of a privileged Turkish citizen-namely the ones self-identifying as Turkish, Sunni Muslim, heterosexual, and breadwinner-my aim in the paper is to reveal and comprehend attitudes toward non-heterosexual people in Turkey, to challenge the effect of the possible nationalist ideological tendencies on participants' discourses, and to explicate if such tendencies play a part in justifying their attitudes. I suggest that respondents' privileges are obtained in exchange for strict commitment to Turkish nationalistic values. These values not only define what constitutes normal but also determine and disparage anyone who deviates from such definition. Greater commitment to such values signals a more powerful heterosexual matrix and thus greater exclusion of queer people in Turkey.Öğe Science, religion, and the nation: de-scienticizing Nobel Prize scientist Aziz Sancar(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2022) Gezgin, Elif; Canbolat, Argun AbrekThis article examines the emergence of Nobel Prize-winning Turkish scientist Aziz Sancar as a scientific persona model. After receiving the Nobel Prize in 2015, Sancar's nationalistic tendencies and close relationship with incumbent Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi - AKP) leaders opened up a wide range of discussions on how a scientist's relationship with politics should be intellectually interpreted. Focusing on the case of Aziz Sancar, this article examines the specific contextual conditions in which a scientist expresses his identity and how it is interpreted by the public. To this end, the aim of this work is to present an in-depth analysis of the discussions that took place in Eksi Sozluk, a popular social media platform acting as an online forum in Turkey, and news from the national media and to scrutinize how a scientific persona is conceived in Turkey and how Aziz Sancar has been 'de-scienticized' in the heavy polarized Turkish political atmosphere.Öğe Türkiye`de Neoliberal Devletin İnşa ve Muhafazasında Çanakkale Savaşı Söyleminin Ro-lü Üzerine Bir Tartışma(2019) Gezgin, ElifBu metinde Çanakkale Savaşı’yla ilgili tarihsel anlatıdaki değişim ve yoğunlaşma, konunun Türkiye’de neoliberal devletin inşa ediliş süreciyle olan ilişkisi çerçevesinde incelenmektedir. Konuyla ilgili tartışma Wacquant`in sentor devlet (centaur state) kavramsallaştırması üzerinden yürütülmekte ve Çanakkale Savaşı vurgusunun günümüz Türkiye’sinin neoliberal ihtiyaçlarına nasıl hizmet ediyor olabileceği sorgulanmaktadır. Bu arka plan çerçevesinde metinde güncel Çanakkale Savaşı anlatısının; Batı karşıtı ideolojileri destekleme, düşman yaratma ve hakim rejime destek toplayıcı bir araç olarak kullanılma işlevleri ele alınmıştır. Bunun yanı sıra, söz konusu eğilimin, savaşın yer aldığı kente, yani Çanakkale’ye olan toplumsal ve mekânsal etkilerine değinilmiştir. Çalışmada, Wacquant’ın kapatma (incarceration) vurgusundan hareketle, ‘ideolojik kapatma’ olarak adlandırabileceğimiz bir kontrol biçiminden daha söz edebileceğimiz öne sürülmekte ve Türkiye örneği üzerinden ele alınan bu tür bir ideolojik kapatmanın, tarihsel referansların ele alınma ve kitlelere yansıtılma biçimiyle olan olası ilişkisine dikkat çekilmektedir. Metnin genel amacı, tarihin kitlelere yansıtılışı ile iktidar ilişkileri arasındaki etkileşimleri yerel bir örnek üzerinden ve neoliberalizm tartışmaları çerçevesinde sorgulamaktır.Öğe Türkiye’de Toplumsal Cinsiyet Karşıtı Hareketlerin Gelişimi Karşısında Akademi(İstanbul Bilgi Üniversitesi, 2024) Gezgin, ElifBu makalede dünya genelinde yükselmeyi sürdüren toplumsal cinsiyet karşıtı hareketlerin Türkiye akademisi üzerindeki etkilerine değinilmiştir. Sosyo-ekonomik dönüşümlerin popülizm, anti-entellektüelizm ve illiberalizm gibi sonuçlarına göz atarak öncelikle neyin içinde olduğumuz sorusuna yanıt aranmış, ardından içinde bulunduğumuz sürecin akademiye toplumsal cinsiyet çalışmaları bağlamında ne gibi etkileri olduğuna örnekler yoluyla değinilmiştir. Türkiye’de bilgiye ve eğitime verilen değerin düşüşüne paralel bir biçimde akademi geneline yansıyan yıpranma ve değer kaybına dikkat çekilmiş, bu etkinin en büyük hızla ortadan kaldırma gayretinde olduğu alanın ise toplumsal cinsiyet araştırmaları olduğu, gerekçeleri ve örnekleri tartışılarak iddia edilmiştir.
