    An Evaluation of Instructors and Curriculums in Tourist Guidance Programs

    Purpose: In this study, it is aimed to determine the current status of the tourist guide education programs available at the associate degree in vocational schools and undergraduate level in tourism faculties at Universities in Turkey in terms of instructors and curriculum. Tourism guidance programs at the associate and undergraduate level were evaluated separately, and in this context, the data on the instructors, curriculums and foreign language lessons taught in the programs were evaluated. Method: In this research, a literature review was made on secondary data (undergraduate and associate degree programs). In this study, which was prepared as a source review and based on the data of 2020, secondary data on the official websites of the Council of Higher Education and related academic units were used. Findings: As a result of the analysis of the data, it was seen that the majority of the instructors who play an important role in tourist guide education do not have an academic degree in the field of tourist guiding. In addition, it has been determined that some of the curriculums are designed by focusing on the qualifications of the instructors rather than the program qualifications, and that the teaching of the courses specified in the Tourist Guidance Vocational Regulation is not taken into account sufficiently in the teaching plans. It has been observed that there is a focus in certain languages among languages, but there is no problem in offering a second foreign language as optional in general. Discussion: Findings of this study was evaluated according the findings and results of related studies in literature, the various suggestions have been put forward regarding the curriculums and the allocation of staff in academic units. Key Words: Tourist Guidance, Tourist Guidance Education, Tourist Guidance Curriculums, Tourism Guidance [TR] Amaç: Bu çalışmada, Türkiye’de üniversitelerde meslek yüksekokullarındaki ön lisans ve turizm fakültelerindeki lisans düzeyinde mevcut olan turist rehberliği eğitimi veren programların öğretim elemanı ve öğretim planı açısından mevcut durumunun tespiti amaçlanmıştır. Ön lisans ve lisans düzeyindeki turizm rehberliği programları ayrı ayrı değerlendirilmiş ve bu kapsamda programlardaki öğretim elemanı, öğretim planları ve öğretilen yabancı dil derslerine ilişkin veriler değerlendirilmiştir. Yöntem: Bu araştırmada ikincil veriler (lisans ve ön lisans programları) üzerinden bir kaynak taraması yapılmıştır. 2020 yılı verilerinin baz alındığı, kaynak taraması niteliğinde hazırlanan bu çalışmada Yüksek Öğretim Kurulu ve ilgili akademik birimlerin resmi web sitelerindeki ikincil verilerden faydalanılmıştır. Bulgular: Verilerin analizi sonucunda turist rehberliği eğitiminde rol alan öğretim elemanlarının çoğunluğunun turist rehberliği alanında bir akademik dereceye sahip olmadıkları görülmüştür. Ayrıca, bazı öğretim planlarının program yeterliliklerinden ziyade öğretim elemanı yeterliliklerine odaklanılarak düzenlendiği ve öğretim planlarında Turist Rehberliği Meslek Yönetmeliği’nde belirtilen derslerin karşılanmasının yeterince dikkate alınmadığı tespit edilmiştir. Verilen yabancı dil derslerinde de belirli dillerde bir yoğunlaşma olduğu fakat genel olarak ikinci yabancı dil seçeneği sunma konusunda bir sorun olmadığı görülmüştür. Tartışma: Çalışmanın bulguları alan yazındaki ilgili çalışmaların bulgu ve sonuçları ile tartışılmış, akademik birimlerdeki öğretim planı ve akademik kadro tahsisine ilişkin çeşitli öneriler ortaya konmuştur.

    Bicycle-Friendly Accommodation Certification: A Comparative Review of Turkiye and International Examples

    This study examines the Bicycle-Friendly Accommodation Facility Certificate implemented by Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkiye within the framework of sustainable tourism. By comparing this certification system with international examples, the research identifies similarities and differences in governance, criteria, and inspection processes. The findings reveal notable commonalities and distinctions among the certification systems. While all systems feature mandatory components such as secure parking, repair tools, and tailored nutritional services, the Turkish model stands out with its state-led, legally grounded framework and its points-based evaluation system, which is designed to encourage service enhancements. However, the study also identifies challenges in post-certification inspections and international visibility, which may limit the model's impact. The findings suggest that aligning Turkiye's certification system with best practices from international models could enhance its effectiveness and foster the growth of bicycle tourism. The insights derived from this research offer actionable guidance for policymakers and stakeholders seeking to promote sustainable tourism practices on a global scale. These insights include the identification of gaps in inspection processes, the enhancement of international cooperation, and the adoption of innovative solutions

    The development status of bicycle tourism in Turkiye: a comprehensive review of opportunities and limitations

    This study aims to understand the development status, challenges, and potential of bicycle tourism in Turkiye, which is a developing destination. The research employs a qualitative case study design, utilizing semi-structured interviews with 27 bicycle tourism stakeholders and experts. The findings reveal that while Turkiye possesses significant advantages for bicycle tourism development, several structural and operational challenges impede its growth. The study identifies three main themes in the findings as markets, positive aspects, and negative aspects. Results indicate that infrastructure deficiencies, limited coordination among stakeholders, and insufficient marketing efforts restrict the sector’s development, despite the country’s natural and cultural potential for bicycle tourism. A framework is presented for developing bicycle tourism in emerging destinations. Strategic insights are likewise provided to policymakers and industry stakeholders seeking to craft sustainable bicycle tourism policies, thereby advancing both scholarship and practice. © 2025 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.
