Bibliometric analysis of neurocysticercosis case reports and evaluation of presented cases
(Academic Press Ltd- Elsevier Science Ltd, 2025) Gürbüz, Esra; Aydemir, Selahattin; Barlik, Fethi; Saygın, Murat; Yıldız, Rahmi; Alkan, Sevil; Ekici, Abdurrahman
Neurocysticercosis (NCC) has been classified as a neglected tropical disease by the World Health Organization (WHO), with the condition being regarded as the most significant parasitic disease affecting the nervous system. Hence, the aim of this study was to conduct a review of previously published case reports on this topic in order to ascertain whether there is an increasing trend of NCC worldwide and evaluate the cases that have been presented. After a comprehensive search of the Web of Science Core Collection using the keywords neurocysticercosis and case reports, studies were selected by applying inclusion criteria. Important data attributes that were extracted in plain text format included the document titles, publication years, journal names, author(s) name(s), keywords, institutions, and countries. In addition, to evaluate the cases, the age and gender of the patients, complaints on admission, localization of the cyst, and treatment procedure used were recorded in an Excel file. The bibliometric analysis was conducted using Biblioshiny. Additionally, GraphPad and Excel were employed for the creation of graphical representations. The dataset analyzed included 297 documents, 162 from various sources, with an average age of 12.2 years and 6.3 citations per document. The number of case reports tended to increase over the years. India and the USA were the leading contributors to NCC case reports, with 78 (26.3 %) and 64 (21.5 %), respectively. This was followed by Brazil, France, and Spain with 31 (10.4 %), 14 (4.7 %) and 13 (4.4 %) case reports, respectively. Moreover 55.5 % of the patients in the cases presented in the articles were male and 12.9 % were in the 21-25 age group. In regard to the cysts, 81.2 % were located in the brain and 15.1 % were in the spine. The most common complaints were headache and seizures in brain localized NCC cases and back pain and numbness or weakness in extremities in spine localized NCC cases. Albendazole was used in 174 (54.5 %) cases, praziquantel in 22 (6.9 %) cases, and ivermectin in five (1.6 %) cases. In conclusion, NCC continues to be an increasingly serious public health problem in India as well as developed countries such as the USA and European countries. NCC can be seen in all age groups, males are more susceptible than females, cysts are more localized in the ventricular system, and albendazole and/or paraziquentel are used in treatment. In addition, more comprehensive studies on the use of ivermectin in the treatment of NCC should be conducted, as success was achieved in cases where ivermectin was used in treatment.

Aim: Some hematological changes are frequently observed in the clinical course of brucellosis. This study aimed to predict the diagnosis of brucellosis based on some hematological biomarkers with the help of ensemble classification methods. Materials and Methods: A total of 23 ensemble classification methods, including 10 bagging, 9 boosting, and 4 stacking approaches were applied to the brucellosis data set. Each subject in the brucellosis data set contains 13 features, including age, gender, and 10 hematological variables. Results: This study included a total of 257 participants [173 (67.3%) brucellosis patients and 84 (32.7%) healthy controls]. The mean values of white blood cells (WBC), hemoglobin (HGB), neutrophil (NEUT), neutrophil/lymphocytes (NEUT/LYMP), and monocytes/lymphocytes (MO/LYMP) of brucellosis patients were found to be significantly lower than those of healthy controls. Random Forest with Gini criterion (RF2) was selected to be the best fit model with a mean accuracy of 0.728. HGB (mean score = 0.1814), age (0.1311), NEUT/LYMP (0.0938), WBC (0.0817) and mean platelet volume (MPV) (0.0815) were determined as most diagnostic parameters in brucellosis. Conclusion: The lower levels of HGB, WBC, and NEUT/LYMP and higher levels of age and MPV may be important indicators for the diagnosis of brucellosis.

(DOC Design and Informatics Co. Ltd., 2025) İrkören, Pelin; Agüloğlu-Bali, Elif; Usta, Oğuz; Şenol, Arzu; Manavlı, Barış; Tanır, Büşra; Gürbüz, Esra; Alıravcı, Işıl Deniz
Objective: Specialty theses in the field of infectious diseases and clinical microbiology (IDCM) play an important role in shaping medical knowledge, yet their publication in scientific journals remains a critical concern. We reviewed the theses of the IDCM specialty program, analyzed the publication rates in scientific journals, and made some recommendations for the future. Materials and Methods: We analyzed the registered IDCM theses in the electronic database of the Council of Higher Education (YÖK, Ankara) between 1984 and 2021. Specialty theses from other medical fields, PhD and master theses, were excluded from the study. Results: Out of 1265 theses, 1061 were included after exclusion criteria were applied. The study revealed that 647 (61%) of residents were female. Of 1061 authors, 117 (11%) received financial support during the preparation of the thesis. The most common thesis topics were viral hepatitis, healthcare-associated infections, antibiotic susceptibility, zoonotic diseases, febrile neutropenia, and sepsis. The predominant type of study design was observational (88%). Notably, 27 (3%) were randomized controlled trials. The overall rate of publication in a peer-reviewed journal was 25%. Nonetheless, 117 (11%) theses were published in the journals indexed in the Science Citation Index (SCI) or the Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCI-E). The median time from the presentation of theses to publication was four years. Conclusion: The publication rate of specialty theses in scientific journals in the field of IDCM was found to be low. Publication of the thesis as a scientific manuscript should be a part of the residency program and the completion process of the thesis. All the residents or young specialists should be encouraged to submit their theses for publication. © 2025, DOC Design and Informatics Co. Ltd.. All rights reserved.

Prognostic Significance of NLR, LMR, PLR, and CRP-Albumin Ratio in Lower Extremity Cellulitis: A Hospitalization and Recurrence Analysis
(Sage Publications Inc, 2024) Yürük Atasoy, Pınar; Gürbüz, Esra; Alkan, Sevil
Cellulitis, an inflammatory disease of the skin and subcutaneous tissue caused by bacterial agents, frequently causes lower-extremity wounds. Many new biomarkers have been introduced to aid the diagnosis of inflammatory diseases. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the risk of recurrence of lower-extremity cellulitis wounds and the factors determining the need for hospitalization. Demographic characteristics and underlying diseases of the patients, white blood cell count, neutrophil, lymphocyte, monocyte, neutrophil, lymphocyte, lymphocyte and monocyte counts at admission, white blood cell count at admission, platelet count, total protein, albumin, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin level, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and CRP/albumin ratio were evaluated. Of the 132 patients with lower extremity cellulitis wounds, the median age was 56 years (range, 20-96 years), and 88 (66.7%) were male. Diabetes mellitus was the most commonly associated systemic disease. The most common symptom (97%) was a rash. Of the patients, 80 (60.6%) were hospitalized and 52 (39.4%) were treated as outpatients. Seventeen (12.9%) patients had recurrent cellulitis. While comorbidities and increased lesion size increased the risk in patients with recurrent cellulitis, median platelet count (P = .010), D-dimer level (P = .036), and CRP-Alb ratio (P = .019) were higher. Particularly increased lesion size, platelet count, total protein, and CRP levels should be a warning to clinicians in terms of the need for hospitalization and the risk of recurrence in patients with cellulite. In our study, PLR and CRP/albumin ratios were found to be high in these patient groups, and determining the usefulness of new biomarkers through new studies will give us a new perspective in clinical practice.
