    Age and Growth of European Hake, Merluccius merluccius in the Sea of Marmara

    Within this study, the most important species European hake which constitutes 50% of the Sea of Marmara demersal fisheries, has been subjected to estimate age, growth characteristics and natural mortality. Bottom trawl hauls were carried out in 19 stations representing the entire Marmara Sea. Sea surveys were performed in different time periods from 2009 to 2011 (September 2009, December 2009, December 2010 and December 2011). A total of 274 sagittal otoliths (117 females, 75 males and 82 unidentified individuals) were obtained from 2009, 2010 and 2011. Sex ratio was calculated 1:1.5 males to females. Age composition was 0+ to 4+ years, most observed age group was 2+ both for female and male (37%). Growth parameters determined by von Bertalanffy equation were found as L∞= 57.51 cm K=0.27 y-1 and t0=-0.57 y-1. Natural mortality was estimated 0.41 y-1. Our results obtained from the Marmara Sea strongly support the fast growth hypothesis of M. merluccius. Growth rates clearly differ between males and females in this sea which shows hake growth depends on sex.

    Length-Frequency Distribution of European Hake, Merluccius merluccius from 1995 to 2016 in the Sea of Marmara

    In this study, European hake (Merluccius merluccius) is one of the most important demersal species of the Sea of Marmara, has been subjected to estimate variation in length and size distribution based on obtained data from Sea of Marmara. A total of 174 bottom trawl hauls were performed in 19 stations representing the entire Sea of Marmara from 1995 to 2016 (July and November 1995, March and October 1996, December 2009, December 2010, February 2011 and August 2016). The estimation of length-weight relationships (LWRs) and distribution of length frequency was estimated according to years and sexes. A total of 5453 speciemens were evaluated. Sex ratio was calculated as 1:1.2 males to females. Overall length-weight relations were estimated W=0.006L3.077 (r2=0.97) for females, W=0.008L2.97 (r2=0.95) for males. According to the length frequency results, observed changes were not significant in size distribution of the samples between 1995 to 1996 and from 2009 to 2011. However, the median value of the total lengths of the individuals obtained in the 90s is greater than the values obtained at the end of the 2000s. The size distributions of the samples obtained in the 1990s are in a wider range than the size range of samples in 2000s. Especially in 2009 and 2016, it was observed that the size distribution was very narrow, also very few large-sized individuals were obtained.

    Otolith morphometry and population parameters of red porgy, Pagrus pagrus (Linnaeus, 1758) in Saros Bay (North Aegean Sea)

    Bu çalışmada, Kuzey Ege Denizi’nde (Saroz Körfezi) Fangri balığının toplam boy (TL) ile toplam ağırlık (TW) arasındaki ilişki, yaş, büyüme ve otolit boyu (OL) - otolit ağırlığı (OW), balık boyu (TL) - otolit boyu (OL), balık ağırlığı (TW) - otolit boyu (OL), otolit boyu (OL) - otolit genişliği (OWi) arasındaki morfometrik ilişkiler incelenmiştir. Toplam 100 adet balık üzerinde yapılan ölçümlerde minimum boy 9,6 cm, maksimum boy 44,4 cm; minimum ağırlık 17,1 g, maksimum ağırlık 1372,5 g olarak tespit edilmiştir. Otolit ağırlığı minimum 0,0181 g, maksimum 0,1456 g; otolit boyu minimum 0,52 cm, maksimum 1,17 cm olarak ölçülmüştür. Boy-ağırlık ilişkisi TW=0,021*TL2,885 (r2=0,98), otolit boyu - otolit ağırlığı OW=0,105*OL2,609 (r2=0,92), toplam boy - otolit boyu OL=0,024*TL+0,249 (r2=0,83) otolit boyu - toplam ağırlık OL=0,235*TW0,237 (r2=0,81) otolit boyu - otolit genişliği OWi=0.501*OL+0.116 (r2=0.832) ilişkileri tespit edilmiştir. En büyük yaş 9 olarak belirlenmiş, von Bertalanffy büyüme parametreleri L?=51,59 cm, K=0,12 yıl-1ve t0= -1,13 yıl olarak hesaplanmıştır.

    Population structure of Pagellus acarne (Risso, 1927) in the North Aegean Sea

    Sparidae family is one of the most important demersal group for Turkish fisheries. When considering the importance of Turkey fisheries, population parameters of Pagellus acarne Risso, 1827 give basic information for future fisheries studies. Studies of biology and population parameters of this species are very limited in the Aegean Sea; therefore we aimed to determine population parameters (length-weight relationship, age and growth parameters, mortality rates and, reproductive season) in order to obtain data for the future studies. We caught 2673 Pagellus acarne specimens between September 2006 to September 2008 from monthly samples atdepths ranging from 20 to 500 m in the Saros Bay using a commercial bottom trawl net. Total length and weight range from 3.5 to27.1 cm, 1.93 to 314.5 g, mean length and weight were 14.0±0.05 cm, 35.6±0.46 g respectively. The length-weight relationship was detected W=0.001*L3.054, which indicated positive allometric growth. The high GSI value was in September. The data on maturity stages indicated that length at 50% maturity (L50) for females 18.1 cm TL for males 15.3 cm TL. The age data derived from sagitta otoliths reading were used to estimate the growth parameters and ranged from 1-4 aged. The von Bertalanffy growth parameters ofthe total were L?=30.63 cm, K=0.26 year-1, to= -0.95. The instantaneous total mortality was Z= 0.72 year-1, the natural mortality M = 0.54 year -1, the fishing mortality F=0.19 year-1 respectively. The exploitation ratio (E) of the stock was found as 0.26. Pagellus acarne is the most important marine fish species with high commercial value for both the Turkey coast and the Mediterranean basin. This study aims to define basic population parameters which should be needed for further fisheries studies and management strategies in Saros Bay, the North Aegean Sea.

    Saroz Körfezi'nde (Kuzey Ege Denizi) mercan balıklarının (Pagellus bogaraveo, Pagellus acarne, Dentex maroccanus) yaş ve büyümesi

    Bu çalışma, TUBİTAK 106Y035 nolu proje kapsamında Saroz Körfezi'nden 0-500 m derinlik konturlarından aylık olarak örneklenmiş Sparidae familyasından Pagellus bogaraveo (Brünnich, 1768), Pagellus acarne (Risso, 1826), Dentex maroocanus (Valenciennes, 1830) türlerinin yaş ve büyüme özelliklerini belirlemek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Çalışma süresince toplam 507 adet fas mercan (Dentex maroccanus) bireyi yakalanmıştır. Örneklerde toplam boy ve ağırlık değerleri sırasıyla minimum 8,9 cm-25,2 cm, 11,2 g-289,2 g aralığında değişmiştir. Detaylı incelenen 227 adet bireyin 185 adedi dişi, 38 adedi erkek ve 4 bireyin cinsiyeti belirlenememiştir. Erkek dişi oranı 1:4,8 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Boy ağırlık ilişkisi tüm bireyler için W= 0,0144*L3.012 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Yaş okuması yapılan 124 bireyin 1-3 yaş aralığında olduğu belirlenmiştir. Hesaplanan von Bertalanffy büyüme parametreleri L?= 25,31 cm, K= 0,49 yıl -1, to= -0,30 olarak tespit edilmiştir. Araştırma süresince toplam 2673 adet Yabani mercan ( Pagellus acarne ) bireyi örneklenmiştir. Örneklerin toplam boy ve ağırlık değerleri sırasıyla 3,5cm-27,1 cm, 1,93 g-314,5 g aralığında değişmiştir. Detaylı incelenen 368 adet Yabani mercan bireyinin 246 adedi dişi, 115 adedi erkek ve 7 adedinin cinsiyeti belirlenememiştir. Erkek dişi oranı 1:2,1 olarak belirlenmiştir. Tüm bireyler üzerinden yapılan boy ağırlık ilişkisi W= 0,0101*L3.054 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Yaş okumaları yapılan 197 bireyin 1-4 yaş aralığında olduğu tespit edilmiştir. Büyüme parametreleri L?=33,84 cm, K=0,17 yıl -1, to=-1,49 yıl olarak hesaplanmıştır. Araştırmada elde edilen 4503 adet Mandagöz mercan'ın (Pagellus bogaraveo) boy ağırlık aralıkları sırasıyla 8 cm- 26,2 cm, 4,35 g-269,4 g olarak belirlenmiştir. Detaylı incelenen 187 adet bireyin 136 adedi dişi, 38 adedi erkek ve 13 bireyin cinsiyeti belirlenememiştir. Erkek dişi oranı 1:3,5 olarak belirlenmiştir. Tüm bireyler için boy ağırlık ilişkisi W=0,007*L3.208 olarak hesaplanmıştır. Yaş okuması yapılan 419 adet Mandagöz mercan bireyinin 1-4 yaş aralığında olduğu belirlenmiştir. von Bertalanffy büyüme parametreleri L?=56 cm, K=0,07 yıl-1, to=-2,32 yıl olarak tespit edilmiştir.
