    An assessment of beach ridges on the Kızılırmak delta based on scanning electron microscopy analyses and grain size parameters

    In this article, beach ridges to the north of the Lake Cernek located in northeast part of the Kızılırmak delta was studied on the basis of scanning electron microscopy analyses and grain size parameters. The analyses results show that the studied sands, contrary to that in coastal dune ridges, belong to successive sandy beach ridges that have formedbehind the prograding delta shoreline. Actually, grain size parameters and spectroscopic and morphological peculiarities of beach ridge sands formed by wave-dominate conditions differ from coastal dune sands of eolian origin. Based on the data obtained,  the samples show very well sorting in standard deviation, negatively skewness and very leptokurtic distribution in terms of kurtosis. Fine to medium grains are predominant, which explains low morphology of beach ridge series. The low kurtosis values are likely associated with the lack of shell fragment within the samples. Electron microscopy analyses demonstrate the predominance of ovoid-shaped angular grains. From the Lake Cernek to the present shoreline, spectroscopic analyses also reveal both paleness in morphological appearance of grains and difference in their elemental compositions. According to data, the analyzed sands correspond to successive beach ridges that have formed as the result of rapid progradation of delta shoreline.Keywords: Beach ridge, Grain size parameters, Scanning electron microscopy, Lake Cernek, Kızılırmak Delta
