Öğe Exotic Polychaetes of a Sewage Pollution Influenced Lagoon (cardak Lagoon, Turkish Straits)(MDPI, 2023) Dağlı, Ertan; Ateş, Abdullah Suat; Acar, Seçil; Büyükateş, Yeşim; Dogan, Alper; Bakır, Ahmet KeremThis paper includes three exotic polychaeta species, Hydroides dianthus (Verrill, 1873), Polydora cornuta Bosc, 1802, and Pseudopolydora paucibranchiata (Okuda, 1937), found during benthic samplings in Çardak Lagoon (Turkish Straits). The sampling was collected from the sandy and silty bottoms known to be polluted by sewage discharges. A total of 45 specimens of exotic polychaetes (H. dianthus: 1; P. cornuta: 4; P. paucibranchiata: 40) were found. The correlation values between the annual average values of the nutrients and the polychaeta abundance showed that the highest positive relationships with the abundance were between sand content, total phosphate, and pH. P. cornuta was the most observed species with a frequency index value of 75%, while H. dianthus was represented with a single species in the study area. Albeit the previous studies, P. paucibranchiata was observed most abundantly in the sampling station having low organic matter amounts. The study showed that opportunistic polychaetes observed in Çardak Lagoon mostly preferred organically poor sediments.Öğe Relationships between environmental variables and abundance of Cnidaria and Echinodermata in Cardak Lagoon, Canakkale Strait(Ege Univ, Fac Fisheries, 2023) Acar, Secil; Ates, Abdullah Suat; Dagli, Ertan; Dogan, AlperThis study is on the relationships between the abundances, of cnidarians and echinoderms found in Cardak Lagoon and environmental variables. The benthos samples were collected in three replicates in October 2018, February, April, and June 2019, using a metal framed quadrat system of 100 x 100 cm and 393 cm(3) sediment core by a SCUBA diver. Sediment material was collected at 7 sampling points of Cardak Lagoon in Canakkale Strait. A total of 259 individuals belonging to phylum, Cnidaria and Echinodermata were found in the study area. Cnidarian, Actinia sp. and echinoderm, Asterina gibbosa were the most dominant species. The highest positive correlation value was between Cnidaria species number and organic matter (OM%) content in the sediment. The highest negative correlation value was between Echinodermata species number and NO2+NO3 in lagoon system.Öğe Spatio-temporal distributions of zoobenthos in soft substratum of Izmir Bay (Aegean Sea, eastern Mediterranean), with special emphasis on alien species and ecological quality status(Cambridge Univ Press, 2012) Cinar, Melih Ertan; Katagan, Tuncer; Ozturk, Bilal; Bakir, Kerem; Dagli, Ertan; Acik, Sermin; Dogan, AlperThe soft-bottom zoobenthic community structure of Izmir Bay was examined seasonally at eight stations (depth-range: 19-67 m) in 2009. A total of 427 species were found. Polychaeta had the highest number of species (50% of total species) and individuals (7596), whereas Echinodermata possessed the highest biomass (47%). The number of species varied from 3 to 79 (0.1 m(-2)), the density from 60 to 5360 ind.m(-2), and the biomass from 1 to 530 g.m(-2). The most numerically dominant species were the polychaetes Aricidea claudiae, Streblospio gynobranchiata, Levinsenia demiri and Sternaspis scutata. The distribution of zoobenthos was strongly related to spatial differences in total organic carbon, sediment texture and depth among different regions of the bay rather than temporal differences among seasons. However, significant seasonal variability in community structure (mainly differences in the relative abundance of species) was present. The inner region of the bay can be classified as 'poor' or 'bad' based on the results of biotic indices (H', AMBI, m-AMBI and BENTIX). Among biotic indices, only H' and m-AMBI appeared to be capable of explaining the bay's benthic quality status. Thirteen alien species were also found. Streblospio gynobranchiata, Prionospio pulchra, Pseudopolydora paucibranchiata and Polydora cornuta formed dense populations in the inner most polluted part of the bay and are considered to be new pollution indicator species in the eastern Mediterranean Sea.
