A Research on the Monitoring of Coastal Land use with Aerial Photographs in the Example of Kadirga bay (Canakkale)
(Springer, 2017) Cengiz, Tulay; Kalyoncu, Metin
In coastal areas, environmental monitoring is an important tool in acquiring data to achieve the goal of sustainable usage relating to the character of changes in quantity and quality of land cover / land use. Studies can reveal the diversity of species and the natural factors and human influence affecting this diversity, occurring as a result of habitat fragmentation or destruction. As well as comparing the past and current state of environmental resources, monitoring helps to determine trends in the use and changes of resources. It was in this context that KadA +/- rga Bay, located on the northwest coast of Canakkale province, Turkey was studied. Also situated in this location is Assos, a significant site in ancient history with great tourism potential. This study determined changes in land cover / land use by means of photogrammetrical interpretation of data from 1957 to 2002. The research further aimed to determine pressure on the components of the ecological structure of the area. Based on the data obtained, projections can be made to protect the future, and will provide an important source for management of the area. Within the 45-year study period, it was determined that agriculture and secondary housing construction exerted the most pressure on the habitat of the area. In the main, an increase in agricultural activities and secondary house construction emerged as the cause of a decrease in wetlands and forest areas.

Bicycle Usage for Sustainable City Transportation: A Case Study for Canakkale City Center
(Univ Namik Kemal, 2016) Cengiz, Tulay; Kahvecioglu, Ceren
Transportation is one of the problems of today's cities. Together with the rise on the population density in the cities, the troubles created by the traffic problems, air pollution and noise carried by the rise of the motor vehicle usage effect both human life and city life negatively. Bicycle usage is seen as the most important solution of the urban transportation problems as it is a healthy, safe, economical, eco friendly type of transportation and useful in terms of accessibility. At the survey, the assessment and design of the city was made in terms of bicycle using taking into consideration the city features of Canakkale and the structure of the transportation network. Three routes were determined according to the results found at the survey. The routes which were determined were assessed in 10 criterions, weighting and convenience coefficients were determined and total convenience points were calculated. On the other hand, the planning, design and drafts needed to present the appropriate found bicycle routes to the citizen'usage were made at the survey. As the result of the survey, it is found that the coastline is the most appropriate cycle lane in the city center of Canakkale in terms of bicycle usage. The second route to be appropriate for bicycle using is the Street of Troya, and the third route is the neighbourhood of Esenler. With the routes, it is aimed to minimize urban transportation problems by designing an uninterrupted bicycle transportation network.

Determination of Optimal Land Use in Gokceada
(Ankara Univ, Fac Agr, 2013) Cengiz, Tulay; Akbulak, Cengiz; Ozcan, Hasan; Baytekin, Harun
Land suitability analysis is a component of sustainability evaluation of a land use. Suitability of land use can only be achieved by determining natural and cultural potential and choice of an appropriate land use with the ecological structure. In this research, land suitablity analysis of Gokceada was carried out, on the basis of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and McHarg methods. After the determination of suitability in terms of the main three land use types, i.e. agriculture, meadow-pasture and forest, an optimal land use map was produced and results were compared with the present-day land use situation. Based on the results of analysis, the area proposed for forest, meadow-pasture and agricultural activities were 35.06%, 21.21% and 17.07%, respectively. When data from optimal land use is compared with that in the present-day conditions, it is noticed that the proportion of meadow-pastures areas excess the suggested value of optimal land use, as opposed to the proportions of forest and agricultural areas having smaller distributions. This implies that some meadow-pastures areas, which are recommended to be evaluated as forest and agricultural areas herein, are presently used as meadow-pasture lands.

Determining ecotourism strategies using A'WOT hybrid method: case study of Troia Historical National Park, Canakkale, Turkey
(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2014) Akbulak, Cengiz; Cengiz, Tulay
Ecotourism is a dynamic sector growing rapidly worldwide and is considered a means of achieving economic growth without ruining the natural and cultural resources of a given area. Ecotourism provides significant advantages in minimizing problems in touristic regions due to intensive growth and misuse of resources, thereby necessitating the importance of determining primary strategies for areas with ecotourism potential. The present study aimed to develop ecotourism strategies for the Troia Historical National Park (THNP) located within Canakkale province in the northwest of Turkey. For this purpose, the A'WOT technique, developed through integration of Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats (SWOT) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) methods, was used. After determination of the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats existing at the THNP, the weights of SWOT groups and their factors were calculated together with AHP and eight strategies intended for development of ecotourism were proposed. These strategies can be summarized as follows: (i) clarifying administrative responsibility for the THNP, (ii) diversification of tourism types, (iii) establishment of tourism development corridors, (iv) establishment of appropriate image for Canakkale and THNP, (v) increasing number of travel agencies, (vi) organizing training programs to develop ecotourism perception, (vii) utilization of advantages provided by strategic location, (viii) utilization of touristic assets within framework of protection-usage principle. It is believed that consideration of the strategies obtained from the findings of this study concerning the THNP and its environment will make an important contribution to the preservation of the landscape structure of the park. Findings also demonstrated that the A'WOT hybrid method is useful and effective in determining ecotourism strategies.

Tourism, an ecological approach in protected areas: Karagol-Sahara National Park, Turkey
(Taylor & Francis Inc, 2007) Cengiz, Tulay
Protected areas are important potential areas from the point of view of ecological tourism because of their natural, historical and cultural richness. In this study, the environmental sustainability of protected areas has been investigated within a sample of the Karagol-Sahara National Park in Turkey. This national park has, so far, had little exposure to recreational and tourism activities. However, an increase in the number of tourists visiting the park has been observed as a result of the demands of ecological tourism. This area was investigated with respect to ecological planning to prevent intensive usage from causing future damage, as a result of human thoughtlessness, and to protect the park. Additionally, the aim was to determine the usage potential using ecological planning and to propose variations of ecotourism thought to be helpful for the public. The Karagol-Sahara National Park has valuable natural and cultural resources, and is an area whose recreation-tourism potential has been strongly protected. The national park also has major economic potential for ecotourism.

Visual Quality Method in Assessing Landscape Characteristics: Case Study of Bozcaada Island
(Coastal Education & Research Foundation, 2014) Cengiz, Tulay
Landscapes are an extremely important resource for tourism and quality of life so there is a need to classify and manage landscapes. In the implementation of visual impact assessment, Bozcaada in the province of Canakkale was selected as the sample area in the research. An analytical and perceptual method covering physical relationships of user environment was applied in the research. Initially, the landscape beauty was evaluated according to the survey of observer preferences. Secondly, the landscape elements and attributes were weighted. Finally, regression and correlation analyses were performed to assess the relationships between weighted landscape attributes and survey results. There were 9 panels, each containing 16 photos, and 210 participants ranked the best 4 and worst 4 photos of each panel. The results showed that degree of wilderness, the presence of negative man-made elements, and percentage of land covered by vegetation decreased the visual quality in Bozcaada. Furthermore, it was determined that visual quality increased with the presence of well-preserved man-made elements, scale, harmony, and color contrast. The research revealed which landscape elements and attributes are important in landscape design.
