    AN EXAMINATION OF SUPERLUMINAL MOTION

    In this work, the debate between Yuri Balashov and Hud Hudson is reviewed in terms of the views put forward by Tim Maudlin. It seems that Maudlin's view can shed light on the debate and may ensure new discussions and perspectives. Hudson, posing an interesting thought experiment, says that superluminal motion is possible whereas Balashov argues to the contrary. If we take into account what Tim Maudlin suggests in the first chapter of his book The Metaphysics within Physics, namely, that laws of nature ought to be accepted as ontologically primitive,we can interpret Balashov-Hudson debate from a new perspective. It can be said that Balashov would be taking a step forward if we were to take into account Maudlin perspective.

    İLLİBERAL DİSTOPYANIN ÜTOPYA OLARAK SUNULMA RETORİĞİNDE ERKEN DÖNEM BİR BİLİM-KURGU: KAVANOZDAKİ ADAM

    Bu çalışmada, Mesut Uçakan’ın Kavanozdaki Adam (1987) dizisi bağlamında ütopya ve distopya kavramlarına değinilmektedir. İdeolojik farklılıkların çakıştığı noktada illiberal ütopya ile illiberal distopya aslında aynı özelliklere sahiptir. Hümanizm ve evrensel değerler bağlamında değerlendirildiğinde ise illiberal demokrasinin unsurları çerçevesinde şekillenen ütopya, bir distopyadır denilebilir. Bu makale bağlamında illiberal distopya, muhafazakâr görüşün bir gelecek tasavvuru ve hatta kısmen gerçekleştirdiği bir yaşam stili olarak ortaya konmaktadır. Özgürlüklerin ve ilerlemenin zıddı şeklinde ortaya çıkan bu tür bir görüşün Türkiye’de ilk serimlendiği bilim-kurgu eser olarak ele alınan Kavanozdaki Adam, ilk olmasının dışında aynı zamanda temsil ettiği ve retoriğini sunduğu anti-entelektüalizm ve anti-materyalizm ile açık bir illiberal savunu yapmaktadır.

    ON BOREDOM IN WINTER SLEEP

    In this work, we focus on the film Winter Sleep (2014) by Nuri Bilge Ceylan,whose works place special emphasis on various aspects of boredom. As one of the main figuresin slow cinema, Ceylan, in this influential work of art, enable us to explore boredom throughthree main characters: Aydın (Haluk Bilginer), Nihal (Melisa Sözen) and Necla (Demet Akbağ).By taking a closer look at the film, we analyze both symbolism and the behavioral side ofboredom as well as how the main characters, in our view, experience and represent distincttypes of boredom. In this framework, we examine the issue of boredom and, sometimes, relateddespair as a result of social change. At the same time, this work partly concentrates on aspectsof the socio-cultural structure of Turkey via the analysis of the main characters’ suffering.

    Science, religion, and the nation: de-scienticizing Nobel Prize scientist Aziz Sancar

    This article examines the emergence of Nobel Prize-winning Turkish scientist Aziz Sancar as a scientific persona model. After receiving the Nobel Prize in 2015, Sancar's nationalistic tendencies and close relationship with incumbent Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi - AKP) leaders opened up a wide range of discussions on how a scientist's relationship with politics should be intellectually interpreted. Focusing on the case of Aziz Sancar, this article examines the specific contextual conditions in which a scientist expresses his identity and how it is interpreted by the public. To this end, the aim of this work is to present an in-depth analysis of the discussions that took place in Eksi Sozluk, a popular social media platform acting as an online forum in Turkey, and news from the national media and to scrutinize how a scientific persona is conceived in Turkey and how Aziz Sancar has been 'de-scienticized' in the heavy polarized Turkish political atmosphere.
