Öğe Analysis of Medical Responses in Mass Gatherings: The Commemoration Ceremonies for the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Gallipoli(Cambridge Univ Press, 2018) Kocak, Huseyin; Caliskan, Cuneyt; Sonmezler, Mehmet Serafettin; Eliuz, Kenan; Kucukdurmaz, FatihIntroductionMass crowds outside the routine population create a burden of disease on Emergency Medical Services (EMS). The need for EMS in various mass-crowd events may vary. It is especially important to determine the EMS requirement that emerges during the historic commemoration ceremonies in Canakkale (Turkey).Hypothesis/ProblemThis study aims to determine the unique challenges in the planning of EMS responses provided for people from various countries at the commemoration ceremony for a 100-year-old war and to identify the medical provision of those services.MethodsThis descriptive study examined the patient applications in the Canakkale EMS at the commemoration ceremonies for the 100(th) anniversary of Gallipoli Wars (Canakkale Amphibious Wars - Turkey) on April 24-25, 2015.ResultsA total of 221 cases were handled by 112 EMS in the ceremony area. Of those, 87.3% of the cases applied to a mobile operating room (MOR) stationed in the ceremony area while 12.7% of them applied directly to the health care team in a large area in the ceremony area. Overall, 13.1% of the cases were transferred to the hospital for further evaluation and treatment. Patient presentation rate (PPR) of the patients who were treated during the two days was 4.42, and transfer to hospital rate (TTHR) of the cases transferred to the hospital was calculated to be 0.58.ConclusionFurther studies may create models in regard to the estimations on mass and needs based on the data of previous organizations.Öğe Determination of individual preparation behaviors of emergency health services personnel towards disasters(Wolters Kluwer Medknow Publications, 2015) Kocak, Huseyin; Caliskan, Cuneyt; Kaya, Edip; Yavuz, Omer; Altintas, Kerim HakanObjective: To determine certain behaviors regarding preparation of Canakkale 112 ambulance service personnel towards emergency situations and disasters. Methods: This study is an epidemiological descriptive study. The population of the study consists of 281 people working for Command Control Center and Emergency Medical Services Station of Canakkale 112 Ambulance Service. About 176 people agreed to participate in the study were interviewed within the scope of the study. Necessary information was obtained by a survey. In the statistical analysis of the study, descriptive statistics, Mann Whitney, Kruskal Wallis and Chi square tests were used. Results: The participation rate of the study was 62.6% (176 people). The participants were in the range of 17-64 years of age. The average age of the participants was (31.6 +/- 9.1) years. About 54% of the participants (95 people) were under the age of 29 and 54% of them (95 people) were male, 23.3% of them (41 people) held a bachelor degree and 35.7% (63 people) of them were Emergency Medical Technicians, respectively. In the study, a statistical relationship was found between some questions of the survey and some variables such as age, gender, degree, membership status for non-governmental organizations, experience of emergency situations, being trained against disasters and desire to have such a training (P < 0.005). Conclusions: As a result of the study, a significant relationship was found between being trained related to disaster and emergency situations and development of positive attitudes about training for disasters and emergencies. This indicates that people, no matter what educational level they are in, have to be trained for disasters and emergencies.Öğe Preparations for Severe Winter Conditions by Emergency Health Personnel in Turkey(Cambridge Univ Press, 2014) Caliskan, Cuneyt; Algan, Aysun; Kocak, Huseyin; Bicer, Burcu Kucuk; Sengelen, Meltem; Cakir, BanuObjective: Emergency and core ambulance personnel work under all environmental conditions, including severe weather condtions. We evaluated emergency medical personnel in Canakkale, Turkey, for their degree of preparedness. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted in C, anakkale, Turkey, within 112 emergency service units and their 17 district stations. Surveys were developed to measure the level of preparedness for serious winter conditions that individual workers made for themselves, their homes, and their cars. Results: Of the 167 survey participants, the mean age was 29.8 +/- 7.9 years; 52.7% were women; more than half (54.75%) were emergency medical technicians; and 53.3% were married. Only 10.4% of those who heated their homes with natural gas had carbon monoxide detectors. Scores relating to household and individual preparation for severe winter conditions increased by participants' age (P<.003), being married (P<.000) and working in the city center (P<.021); and for men whose cars were equipped with tow ropes, extra clothing, and snow tires (P<.05). Absenteeism was higher for central-city personnel than district workers because they were less prepared for harsh winter conditions (P=.016). Conclusion: Many of the surveyed emergency health personel demonstrated insufficient preparations for serious winter conditions. To increase the safety and efficiency of emergency medical personnel, educational training programs should be rountinely conducted.Öğe Risk Communication in Public Health Practices and Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19): Social Media Analysis of Health Authorities(Bezmialem Vakif Univ, 2020) Karakoc, Mirac Nevzat; Kocak, Huseyin; Caliskan, Cuneyt; Kinik, KeremObjective: This study aims to evaluate information on the website of the Ministry of Health about the COVID-19 pandemic, the social media accounts of health authorities, and the COVID-19 cases. Methods: In this descriptive ecological research, the content analysis of the posts about COVID-19, which were shared for health professionals and the public on the official website of the Ministry of Health, was conducted. The content traffic of the social media accounts of the health authorities about the pandemic and the daily number of cases along with recovery and death rates related to the pandemic were analyzed. Results: The first COVID-19 post was sent on 22 January 2020 through the official Twitter account of the Minister of Health. After the first tweet about COVID-19, the first positive case was seen in the 50th day, while the first death was seen in the 57th day and the first recovery case was seen in the 67th day. There is a significant positive correlation between the number of days passed and the number of cases, deaths, recoveries, comments, retweets and likes that the tweets of the Minister received; between the number of cases and the number of deaths and recovery cases; between fatal cases and recovery cases. Conclusion: A correlation was found between the tweet traffic of the health authorities' twitter accounts and the number of COVID-19 cases, deaths, recoveries and days passed. Therefore, social platforms can be an important risk communication tool for public health in informing and managing the community in disasters like pandemics.Öğe Terrorist attacks in Türkiye: An analysis of counter-terrorism medicine(2024) Kinik, Kerem; Dag, Nihal; Kocak, Huseyin; Caliskan, CuneytAim: The objective of this research was to perform a counter-terrorism medicine analysis of terrorist attacks in Türkiye. Methods: This study is a retrospective cross-sectional research. The study population consisted of terrorist incidents that occurred in Türkiye, as provided by the START Global Terrorism Database for the period from 1970 to 2020. Various characteristics of terror attacks in Türkiye were analyzed and presented in tabular form. Results: Over the past 51 years, there have been a total of 4,485 terrorist incidents, with 91.2% reaching their intended targets as orchestrated by terrorist organizations in Türkiye. Of these incidents, 2,767 had detrimental economic impacts. Additionally, 17,570 individuals experienced adverse medical effects. Among the 81 provinces in Turkey, Istanbul witnessed the highest number of terrorist incidents and suffered the most significant medical consequences. Conclusion: Türkiye has been significantly impacted by terrorist incidents over the past fifty years especially within the last decade, particularly in metropolitan provinces like Istanbul. These events have negatively affected both the health and economic well-being of many individuals. In response, while the country has implemented various security measures and preparedness strategies to mitigate such incidents, there is also a critical need to improve the readiness of healthcare services to effectively handle the potential consequences of terrorist attacks. This includes advancing anti-terror medicine and tactical medicine capabilities, as well as strengthening mass casualty management systems. Such improvements will ensure a more effective and coordinated response to large-scale emergencies, ultimately saving lives and reducing the long-term impacts on society.Öğe The Health Complaints of School Age Children in Turkey(Galenos Publ House, 2020) Caliskan, Cuneyt; Topsakal, Hatice; Arberk, Orhan Koray; Bicer, Burcu Kucuk; Unlu, Hande Konsuk; Ozcebe, HilalAim: This study aims to identify the frequency of the most commonly seen health complaints and their relations with the socio-demographic characteristics of households in Turkey. Materials and Methods: The Turkey Health Survey research was conducted as a cross-sectional study by The Turkish Statistical Institute. Within the scope of the research, the health status history of a total of 3.921 children aged 7-14 was examined to identify the following factors: Gender and age of the children, some sociodemographic characteristics of their households, health complaints in the previous 6 months and treatment status at health-care facilities for these children aged 7-14 years. Results: The findings showed that of the 3.921 children who participated in this research, 50.8% were male, 34.4% had at least one health complaint, and 88.0% of the children with health complaints were treated. The most commonly seen health complaints in the children in the previous 6 months were oral and dental-related health complaints (25.8%), eye-related health complaints (14.6%) and infectious diseases (9.8%). According to the results of a logistic regression, the higher the number of people living in the household, the presence of a person who defines their health status as poor and the presence of an individual with chronic disease in the household affect the presence of health complaints in children negatively. Conclusion: It was found that the health status of children can be affected in families with chronic disease or poor health, and it is suggested that research on child health should be investigated extensively in such families.Öğe Time, island and ambulance type characteristics of patient transfers from two Turkish islands Gokceada and Bozcaada(Emerald Group Publishing Ltd, 2020) Caliskan, Cuneyt; Altintas, K. HakanPurpose The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the time, place and ambulance types specified on the ambulance patient registry forms for cases transferred through 112 EMS in the Bozcaada and Gokceada island districts of the province of canakkale. Design/methodology/approach The universe of the descriptive - cross-sectional epidemiological study was composed of the ambulance patient registration forms of the cases which were transferred from Bozcaada and Gokceada islands between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2013. Findings Of the transfers made, 28.1 percent were in the year 2012, 39.5 percent were in summer, 16.6 percent were in July, 17.9 percent were on Monday, 37.1 percent were between 12.00 and 17.59 h and 61.5 percent were from Gokceada island. Ground ambulances were more common in the transfers from Bozcaada island, while ambulance boat and helicopter ambulance were more common for transfers from Gokceada island. Helicopter-Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) (p<0.001), which is commonly preferred for patient transfers, inversely affects the use of Ambulance Boat-Emergency Medical Service (BEMS) and ground ambulances. Transfers from Bozcaada island were found to be shorter in duration, and the number of transfers from Bozcaada island between 00.00 and 05.59 h were found to be higher than from Gokceada island (p<0.001), while the number of transfers via ground ambulance between 00.00 and 05.59 h were found to be higher than the other ambulance types (p<0.001). Practical implications This study reveals the current state of the various referral routes from the islands. Originality/value This paper is the first study to demonstrate the characteristics of patients referred from the island belongs to Turkey.Öğe Web search behaviors and infodemic attitudes regarding COVID-19 in Turkey: A framework study for improving response and informing policy on the COVID-19 infodemic(Frontiers Media Sa, 2022) Caliskan, Cuneyt; Ozsezer, Gozde; Pay, Melek; Demir, Gulcan; Celebi, Ismet; Kocak, HuseyinObjectiveThis study aimed to develop a framework regarding COVID-19 infodemic response and policy informing through focusing on infodemic concepts circulating on the online search engine in Turkey in relation to the COVID-19 outbreak and comparing the contents of these concepts with Maslow's hierarchy of needs and disaster stages. Materials and methodsThe universe of this descriptive epidemiological research consists of internet search activities on COVID-19 circulating online on Google Trends between March 10, 2020, when the first case was seen in Turkey, and June 01, 2020, when the lockdown restrictions were lifted. FindingsThere was no internet trend regarding a misinformed attitude within the given date range. While an infodemic attitude toward superficial attitude and racist attitude in the internet environment was detected for 1 week, an infodemic attitude toward definitive attitude was detected for 2 weeks. The non-infodemic concepts were more common than the other infodemic attitudes. The infodemic concepts were able to reach Maslow's physiological, safety, and social need levels. With the infodemic concepts obtained, a COVID-19 development process framework was developed. The framework consists of three domains (COVID-19, applications and outcomes), including disaster phases and health/social impacts, built on seven public health epochs. ResultsA systematized COVID-19 development process framework was modeled in order to conceptualize COVID-19 internet searches and to reveal the development processes and outcomes.Öğe
