ABUNDANCE OF WESTERN CASPIAN TURTLE, Mauremys rivulata (VALENCIENNES, 1833) IN GOKCEADA (IMBROS), TURKEY
(Folium Publ Co, 2016) Bayrakci, Yusuf; Ayaz, Dincer; Yakin, Batuhan Yaman; Cicek, Kerim; Tok, Cemal Varol
In this study, we present data on the population of Western Caspian Turtle, Mauremys rivulata, from Gokceada (Imbros) located at the westernmost of Turkey. The species is distributed almost all around the island, particularly in the western part, with a very low density. Distribution of the species on the island was mapped and a total of 73 individuals were captured and marked in Buyukdere, the largest river of the island. Population size was estimated at 135 individuals (SE - 11, range - 117 - 161) and density was calculated as 68 ind/ha. Moreover, Emys orbicularis, another freshwater turtle species, which cohabits in the west Anatolia, was observed again on the island after 15 years. Tourism, creeks with irregular flow regime and holding water in the dams negatively affect populations of aquatic species, primarily M. rivulata on the island.

(Inst Zoology, Bas, 2015) Cicek, Kerim; Afsar, Murat; Kumas, Meltem; Ayaz, Dincer; Tok, Cemal Varol
We studied the age structure of Kotschy's gecko, Mediodactylus kotschyi, from the Sultan Mountains (Central Anatolia, Turkey) using the skeletochronological method. We examined the humeral diaphyseal cross sections of a total of 19 (six males and 13 females) museum specimens. Our results showed that the age structure ranged from three to seven years (mean = 4.2 years, SD = 1.47) in males and from two to eight years (mean = 4.5 years, SD = 1.81) in females. Both sexes reached sexual maturity after their second hibernation, and no statistically significant difference in age composition was observed between the sexes. There was a strong positive correlation between SVL and age (Spearman's correlation coefficient, r = 0.93) and Von Bertalanffy growth curves fitted to the relationships between age (k = 0.80) and SVL (SVLmax = 42.4). In conclusion, M. kotschyi is a short-lived species with a high growth rate.

(Inst Zoology, Bas, 2014) Cicek, Kerim; Tok, Cemal Varol; Hayretdag, Sibel; Ayaz, Dincer
We examined the food composition of the European Glass Lizard, Pseudopus apodus, from canakkale (Western Anatolia, Turkey), by means of the stomach content analysis. Some 72 prey items with sizes ranging from 10 to 60 mm were detected in the stomach contents of the 13 (7 male male, 6 female female) museum specimens under examination. The median number of prey items was 5 (range = 3-8) in males and 4 (4-6) in females. According to the obtained data, the class Insecta (86.1%) is the predominant food of the species, with the most frequently observed prey items belonging to the order Coleoptera (76.4%). Orthoptera (4.2%), Hemiptera (5.6%), Gastropoda (8.3%), and Isopoda (5.6%) are the other prey groups observed in the food contents. Even though no difference in food contents was observed between the sexes, the food niche breadth of females was higher. In conclusion, the main food of P. apodus consists of non-flying or weak-flying insects as well as other invertebrates.

Genetic structuring of Anguis fragilis (L., 1758) inhabiting in the north of 40° north latitude in Turkey
(Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2013) Keskin, Emre; Hayretdag, Sibel; Cicek, Kerim; Ayaz, Dincer; Tok, Cemal Varol
The taxonomic situation of Anguis fragilis species is still unclear in Turkey. In order to clarify this situation, we used the DNA sequences of 16S rRNA and cytochrome b genes to analyze the phylogenetic relationship among A. fragilis populations. A total of 13 haplotypes in 16S rRNA dataset and 20 haplotypes in cytochrome b dataset were detected. Kimura 2-parameter genetic distance was found to be 0.012 for 16S rRNA and 0.026 for the cytochrome b dataset. Neighbor joining (NJ) trees were constructed to analyze phylogenetic relationship among specimens and were supported with median joining networks. Results indicate a clear genetic structuring in A. fragilis populations sampled from north of 408 north latitude of Turkey. Both mitochondrial gene sequences successfully detected the intraspecific variation among specimens of different populations. Genetic structuring, correlated with geographic distance, was found to be significant at the specimens sampled from edge populations of peripherally isolated climatic conditions.

Genetic structuring of Pseudopus apodus (Pallas, 1775) (Sauria: Anguidae) in north Anatolia, Turkey
(Pergamon-Elsevier Science Ltd, 2013) Keskin, Emre; Tok, Cemal Varol; Hayretdag, Sibel; Cicek, Kerim; Ayaz, Dincer
In this study, mitochondrial 16S rRNA and cytochrome b sequences were used to infer the genetic structure of Pseudopus apodus (Pallas, 1775) populations sampled from 40 North latitude of Turkey. Mean percent G-C contents of 47.13 and 46.66 were determined for 16S rRNA and cytochrome b datasets, respectively. Two haplotypes were found using 16S rRNA dataset, with 6 variable loci and a haplotype diversity of 0.1053, while Cytochrome b dataset consist of 10 haplotypes, with 18 variable loci and a haplotype diversity of 0.1943. Also mean genetic distance was found to be eight times higher in the cytochrome b dataset. Kimura 2-parameter genetic distance matrix was evaluated together with neighbor joining tree and median joining network in order to reveal possible divergence points in both datasets. Results indicated signs of 3 regional populations, including potential cryptic species from Digor or subspecies from Samsun and Sinop. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Mitochondrial diversity of European pond turtles (Emys orbicularis) in Anatolia and the Ponto-Caspian Region: Multiple old refuges, hotspot of extant diversification and critically endangered endemics
(Springer Heidelberg, 2009) Fritz, Uwe; Ayaz, Dincer; Hundsdoerfer, Anna K.; Kotenko, Tatiana; Guicking, Daniela; Wink, Michael; Tok, Cemal Varol
The European pond turtle, Emys orbicularis (Linnaeus, 1758), is one of the world's most widely distributed chelonian species. We investigated its mitochondrial phylogeography and demography using similar to 1300 cyt b sequences from the entire range, with a focus on the eastern part, in particular on Turkey, where the species currently suffers massive losses. Coloration data from > 1450 turtles were compared with mtDNA differentiation to assess the validity of the currently accepted subspecies from Turkey, the Black Sea Region, the Transcaucasus, and Iran. Our study region harbors considerable part of the mtDNA diversity of Emys, including a newly discovered lineage and 16 new haplotypes. In this area corresponding to approximately one-third of the entire distribution range, six out of the ten mitochondrial lineages and about half of all 72 haplotypes occur. Two mitochondrial lineages (VIII, X) are confined to small ranges along the southern coast of Turkey, another lineage (I) occupies the remainder of Turkey, the entire Black Sea Region, and the north-eastern part of the species' range. In the south-western corner of the Black Sea and in the Aegean Region, two lineages (II, IV) occur that have their main distribution areas farther west. In the Transcaucasus and northern Iran, another endemic lineage (VII) is found. Lineage I is the largest and most diverse of all lineages and has its greatest diversity in Anatolia. Phylogeographic and demographic data suggest Anatolia as an ancient glacial refuge for turtles harboring mitochondrial lineages I, VIII and X, and that Anatolia and the Black Sea coasts constitute a hotspot for a younger burst of diversification within lineage I. These two regions correspond to the glacial refuge from which lineage I turtles recolonized more northerly parts of the range in the Holocene; lineage II represents an off-shoot of lineage I that became isolated in a westward-located refuge in the south-eastern Balkans during a previous Pleistocene glacial. Our data on coloration indicate that Such characters have only limited value for delineating evolutionarily significant units. We propose to reduce the number of subspecies using mtDNA lineages as arbiter, and to recognize three subspecies as valid in Turkey, the Black Sea Region, the Transcaucasus and Iran: Emys orbicularis orbicularis (mtDNA lineage 1); E. o. eiselti Fritz et al., 1998 (X); and E. o. persica Eichwald, 1831 (VII). However, the Southern Turkish lineage VIII most probably represents an additional undescribed subspecies. Both southern Turkish endemics are critically endangered, with only three surviving populations of fewer than 30 adults each. We recommend establishing sanctuaries for them, and including them in the IUCN Red List. (C) 2009 Gesellschaft fur Biologische Systematik. Published by Elsevier GmbH. All rights reserved.

On the occurrence of the Pond Slider Turtle Trachemys scripta (Thunberg in Schoepff, 1792) from southwestern Türkiye
(Department of Environmental Sciences, Arak University, 2024) Yakın, Batuhan Yaman; Çiçek, Kerim; Bayrakçı, Yusuf; Günay, Ulvi Kerem; Afşar, Murat; Ayaz, Dincer; Tok, Cemal Varol
Trachemys scripta is included among the 100 most invasive species worldwide. Since the first report on the presence of pond slider turtles from natural habitats in Türkiye, the distribution of this invasive species comprises almost thirty provinces. However, it spread to much wider sites than the regions determined until today. Besides, there is a lack of knowledge on which subspecies exist in the invaded habitats. Within this study, we presented the presence of two subspecies of the invasive alien slider turtle for the first time from the Reşadiye, Datça, Muğla, Türkiye. We also suggest certain precautions should be taken against slider turtles to contribute to preventing their invasion of our biodiversity.

Reproductive Ecology of the European Pond Turtle, Emys orbicularis (Linnaeus, 1758), from Mediterranean Turkey
(Inst Zoology, Bas, 2017) Ayaz, Dincer; Cicek, Kerim; Bayrakci, Yusuf; Tok, Cemal Varol
For two consecutive years (2012 and 2013), studies on reproductive ecology of Emys orbicularis were conducted at seven localities in the Mediterranean region of Turkey. Our findings show that individuals usually emerge from hibernation between the end of February and early March. Depending on latitude and elevation, mating occurred between March and May, and egg -laying lasted between May and July. Hatchlings were first observed between June and August. Average fecundity in females was 7 (5-10) eggs, and incubation period was determined to last between 80 and 110 days. Average size of eggs was 33.55 x 20.32 mm, and only a weak correlation between numbers of eggs and female body sizes (straight carapace length, SCL) was found. Average measurements of hatchlings were: SCL was 20.6 mm (18-23 mm), plastron length (PL) was 19.6 (17.6-22.4 mm) and weight was 3.6 g (2.9-4.3 g). These were compared to previously published results obtained for E. orbicularis from other parts of its range. Also, factors that affect reproductive success were discussed.
