    Lithium Associated Side Effects and Neurotoxicity: Is Lithium Neurotoxicity Related to Iron Deposition?

    Lithium is a mood stabilizer that Australian psychiatrist John Cade and the Swiss Baastrup and Schou’s pioneering studies brought in the treatment of bipolar disorder. In current guidelines, it is still considered as first line therapy for acute mania, depression and remission periods. Along with numerous neurotrophic and cytoprotective effects, lithium may rarely cause neurotoxicity. Neuro-toxicity might be related with dose dependent or independent. Mechanism of neurotoxicity has not been identified yet. A possible reason of lithium neurotoxicity is that lithium complicates iron efflux from neurons by inhibiting the tau cascade. Accumulation of iron may increase hydroxyl radical formation, resulting in oxidative neurotoxicity. On the other hand, mechanisms that may alleviate iron deposition should also be considered. This review will address the cardiac and met-abolic side effects of lithium and clinical features and biochemical regimes of neurotoxicity, and its relationship with iron accumulation.

    Reliability and Validity of the Turkish versions of the Davos Assessment of Cognitive Biases Scale (DACOBS) and Cognitive Biases Questionnaire for Psychosis (CBQp)

    Introduction: Cognitive biases can be defined as dysfunctional patterns of thought formation that lead to incorrect conclusions and abnormal perceptions and are critical factors in the development and maintenance of psychosis. Two self-report measures assessing cognitive biases in psychosis spectrum disorder (PSD) have recently been developed: the Davos Assessment of Cognitive Biases Scale (DACOBS) and the Cognitive Biases Questionnaire for Psychosis (CBQp). This study aimed to validate the Turkish versions of the DACOBS and CBQp. Methods: The sample consisted of 171 patients with PSD and 162 age and sex-matched healthy controls (HC). We investigated I) the factor structure with confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), II) the reliability (internal consistency and test-retest reliability), III) discriminative power, IV) convergent validity, and V) the concurrent validity of DACOBS and CBQp. Results: The 7-factor solution for DACOBS, similar to the original study, and the 5-factor solution for CBQp provided the best fit. DACOBS and CBQp total and their subscale scores showed good internal consistency and test-retest reliability. DACOBS and CBQp total and their subscale scores could differentiate between PSD patients and HCs when controlling for age, sex, and education. DACOBS and CBQp showed a positively moderate correlation. DACOBS and CBQp scores were associated with psychotic symptoms in PSD patients and positive psychic experiences in HCs. Conclusions: Both the DACOBS and the CBQp have good psychometric properties and are suitable instruments for assessing cognitive biases in the Turkish population. The Turkish versions of the DACOBS and CBQp were as reliable and valid as the original.

    Thiol disulfide homeostasis in psychiatric disorders: A comprehensive review

    Thiol-disulfide couple maintains an intracellular redox status. Dynamic thiol-disulfide homeostasis acts crucial parts in metabolic processes involving signal mechanisms, inflammation, antioxidant defense. Thiol-disulfide homeostasis have been implicated in numerous diseases. In this comprehensive review we identified the studies that examined the thiol-disulfide homeostasis in psychiatric disorders. Most cases demonstrated alterations in thiol-disulfide homeostasis and in most of them the thiol-disulfide balance tended to change direction to the disulfide side, that is, to the oxidative side. Currently, the fact that N-acetylcysteine, a thiol-containing compound, is of great interest as a new treatment approach in psychiatric disorders and the role of glutathione, the most abundant thiol, in the brain highlights the importance of evaluating the thiol-disulfide balance in psychiatric disorders.
