Hydrochemical and Bacteriological Status of a High Altitude Karstic Cave Stream (Güvercinkaya Cave: Çanakkale, Turkey) with Aquatic Macroinvertebrates Findings
(Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart Üniversitesi, 2022) Odabaşı, Deniz Anıl; Odabaşı, Serpil; Deniz, Ozan; Çakır, Fikret; Elipek, Belgin; Arslan, Naime; Özbek, Onur; Özalp, H. Barış
Caves are laboratories for many disciplines that work in natural sciences including mineralogy, biology, hydrogeology, and archaeology. In this study, bi-monthly samplings were carried out from three smapling locations within and around the Güvercinkaya Cave, a high-altitude cave located in nortwestern Turkey, to evaluate the hydrochemical and microbiological properties and the aquatic macroinvertebrates of the cave stream. Some parameters of the water including pH, electrical conductivity, temperature, oxidation-reduction potential, dissolved oxygen were measured in-situ, while elemental (70 in total) and ionic composition of water were analyzed in the laboratory. Microbiological analyses of the cave stream were examined through analyses of total bacteria, total coliforms, fecal coliforms, fecal Streptococcus, and Escherichia coli. According to the Piper diagram of hydrochemical data, the cave stream had mainly Ca-Mg-HCO3 character, on the other hand, the Schoeller diagram indicated a common water source in Güvercinkaya cave due to the similar components of the main ionic components of the water. As a result of microbiological analysis, fecal contamination was determined, indicating an active wildlife in the cave. Additionally, several aquatic macroinvertebrates taxa, Rhynchelmis limosella, Dugesia sp., Gammarus uludagi which have non-troglobiont character were found in the cave stream. Rhynchelmis limosella detected in this study is the first record for the Turkish fauna.

(2009) Akbulut, Mehmet; Çelik, Ekrem Şanver; Odabaşi, Deniz Anil; Kaya, Hasan; Selvi, Kahraman; Arslan, Naime; Odabaşi, Serpil S.
Seasonal changes of proportional distribution, biotic indices, abundance, and frequency of benthic macroinvertebrate communities in Menderes Creek were investigated at 5 stations between November 2005 and July 2006. The fauna included a total of 87 taxa belonging principally to Insecta (52 taxa, especially Chironomidae), Oligochaeta (12 taxa), Mollusca (11 taxa), Hirudinae (7 taxa), and Malacostraca (5 taxa). Mean density was estimated to be 778 individuals m-2 for the 87 taxa. Mollusca (38.5%) and Insecta (39.9%) are the dominant groups among the macroin-vertebrate assemblages. Average Shannon-Wiener diversity index was calculated as 1.41, average Margalefs richness index was 1.27, and average Pielou index was 0.61. The results of one-way analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) indicated that macroinvertebrate compositions were significantly different between sampling sites (p> 0.05). ANOSIM and similarity percentage analysis (SIMPER) revealed significant differences and a high degree of community dissimilarity within and between the sampling stations.

The First Record of Chaetogaster limnaei limnaei Baer 1827 (Annelida: Clitellata) on Pseudobithynia yildirimi (Gastropoda: Prosobranchia) from Northwest of Turkey
(Central Fisheries Research Inst, 2015) Odabasi, Serpil; Odabasi, Deniz Anil; Arslan, Naime
In this study, the presence of the Chaetogaster limnaei limnaei Baer, 1827, regarded as ectocommensal on the freshwater Mollusca, was observed on the pallial cavity of Pseudobithynia yildirimi Odabasi et al., 2013. This is the first time the presence of C. limnaei limnaei on the Pseudobithynia genus has been reported. Despite the nonhazardous character of the epizoic worm, its ultra-structural and population level of damage on the narrow-range endemic host should be well measured.

The Non-indigenous and Ponto-Caspian Gastropoda Fauna of Lake Sapanca (Turkey), with Notes on the Ponto-Caspian Clitellata Species in the Lake
(Inst Zoology, Bas, 2017) Arslan, Naime; Akkan-Kokcu, Cansev; Mercan, Deniz; Odabasi, Deniz Anil
Many Ponto-Caspian invertebrate species have been introduced to new areas in Europe, Baltic Sea and North America. In Turkey, the Ponto-Caspian fauna has spread in the inland waters, following different patterns and in different geological periods. Lake Sapanca is located on a tectonic hole in the Marmara region in the north-western part of Turkey. Except for a few studies, there has been no detailed information about the non-indigenous and Ponto-Caspian species in the lake. In the present study (from June 2011 to December 2013), the benthic macroinvertebrate fauna of Lake Sapanca was determined. The following Gastropoda species, which originate from the Ponto-Caspian area, were detected: Lithoglyphus naticoides, Esperiana esperi, and Borysthenia naticina. The presence of these species in different parts of Turkey suggests that the main routes of migration might be the rivers flowing into the Black Sea. Some notes on the Ponto-Caspian and invasive Clitellata species in the lake were made.

The use of BMWP and ASPT indices for evaluation of water quality according to macroinvertebrates in Kucuk Menderes River (Turkey)
(Springer, 2016) Arslan, Naime; Salur, Ali; Kalyoncu, Hasan; Mercan, Deniz; Barisik, Burcu; Odabasi, Deniz A.
This study was carried out in the Kucuk Menderes River basin in order to determine the water quality and investigate the environmental quality and the applicability of both the Biological Monitoring Working Party (BMWP) and Average Score Per Taxon (ASPT). Monitoring took place in May, July and September 2014 at 10 stations (7 rivers and 3 lakes) according to the method of Intercalibration Common Metrics. Some metrics (BMWP, ASPT, Family Biotic Index, Simpson Diversity Index, Shannon-Wiener Diversity Index, Margalef Diversity Index, dominance, frequency and existence of sensitive species) were calculated. In total, 69 taxa comprising 5,814 individuals were detected. The taxa having the highest frequency rate were Limnodrilus hoffmeisteri (70%), Chironomus (Camptochironomus) tentans (70%), Psammoryctides albicola (60%), Physella acuta (60%), Nais elinguis (60%) and Stylaria lacustris (50%), which are alpha mesosaprobic and polysaprobic species, respectively. The presence and high dominance and frequency rate of these species have indicated basin pollution. Positive indicator species for water quality are Gomphus schneideri, Trithemis annulata, Lindenia tetraphylla, Orthetrum cancellatum, Hydropsyche angustipennis, Cricotopus (Cricotopus) fuscus and Cricotopus (Cricotopus) annulator, while negative indicator species are Culex pipiens, Chironomus (Camptoch.) tentans, Chironomus thummi, Stylaria lacustris and Eristalis tenax. Habitat quality of the Kucuk Menderes River basin was not high (it was found to be heavily polluted/polluted/slightly polluted according to the physicochemical data, BMWP and ASPT) due to physical habitat degradation, urban waste waters, touristic, seasonal dwelling and agricultural activities.
