Öğe Classification of Global Public Goods in the Context of Production and Management Dynamics of Global Public Goods(Maliye Bakanligi, 2006) Akdemir, Ali; Şahin, MehmetProblems arisen as a result of globalization and inadequacy of existing actors to solve them introduced the concept of global public goods. The concept has been intensively discussed since 1990's. However, the concept is discussed through very different classifications. This can cause some uncertainty and complexities. Because global public good must be taken in hand in terms of production and management dynamics. Previous classifications have not suggest any solutions which give answer to production and management problems. In the study, from this starting point, classifications of global public goods are tried to make in terms of production and management dynamics.Öğe How human resource operations work in higher education institutions(Elsevier Science Bv, 2013) Arslan, Hasan; Akdemir, Ali; Karsli, Mehmet DurduThe purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions of faculty members about human resources operations in their higher education institutions whether human resources operations were adopting value-added service delivery strategies or not. An assessment instrument from the HR Value Proposition Model was applied to faculty members. The assessment tool from the HR Value Proposition Model was adapted to the higher education environment. The HR value-added model consists of 14 criteria in order to evaluate the perceptions of faculty members. The results indicate that a value-added roles model for higher education institutions requires a re-definition of HR roles, the development of new competencies, and the implementation of new approaches and outcomes accountability. Çalışmada bu temelden hareketle üretim ve yönetim dinamikleri bakımından Küresel Kamusal Mal sınıflandırmaları yapılmaya çalışılmıştır.Öğe Restless legs syndrome is related to obstructive sleep apnea symptoms during pregnancy(Springer Heidelberg, 2015) Terzi, Hasan; Terzi, Rabia; Zeybek, Burak; Ergenoglu, Mete; Hacivelioglu, Servet; Akdemir, Ali; Yeniel, OzgurTo investigate the relation between restless legs syndrome (RLS) and obstructive sleep apnea symptoms during pregnancy. A questionnaire consisting of diagnostic criteria of restless legs syndrome, demographic characteristics, personal behavior, muscle cramps during pregnancy, past medical illnesses, family history of RLS, and the major symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome was administered during a face-to-face interview. Pregnant women with and without RLS were compared in terms of serum hemoglobin, hematocrit, calcium, phosphor, iron, folate, vitamin B12 levels, and obstructive sleep apnea symptoms. There were statistically significant differences between two groups in terms of two of the obstructive sleep apnea symptoms (witnessed apnea and fatigue) (p < 0.01). No statistically significant difference was found with regard to serum calcium, magnesium, iron, hemoglobin, hematocrit, vitamin B12, phosphor, and folate levels; however, there were significant differences in terms of total iron-binding capacity. Increasing awareness of restless legs syndrome among obstetricians is essential as it might be related to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, which is associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes.Öğe Using strategic philanthropy to improve heritage tourist sites on the Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey: community perceptions of changing quality of life and of the sponsoring organization(Routledge Journals, Taylor & Francis Ltd, 2013) Polonsky, Michael; Hall, John; Vieceli, Julian; Atay, Lutfi; Akdemir, Ali; Marangoz, MehmetThis paper examines the Respect for History project on Turkey's Gallipoli Peninsula sponsored by a Turkish oil company, OPET. The project sought to enhance and protect the cultural and historical experiences of tourists visiting Gallipoli, and to bring direct and indirect benefits to local communities through enhancing tourism-related business opportunities and improving community infrastructure. This research investigates the project's impact on residents' perceived social and economic wellbeing, using a quality of life framework, and also ascertains residents' views of the sponsoring firm. The context illustrates key differences between pure philanthropy and strategic philanthropy; the latter defined as doing good by purposefully achieving corporate and civic benefits. The role of strategic philanthropy as a sustainable tourism development tool, and its impact on tourism governance, are considered. Data were collected from 674 residents on the Turkish Gallipoli Peninsula in areas impacted by OPET's investment program. The results, using structural equation modelling (SEM), identify that respondents generally believe that both their economic and social quality of life have improved. This, in turn, has positively influenced respondents' views of the sponsoring organization. The concept of strategic philanthropy appears valuable as a private sector, non-tourism, sustainable tourism development tool in some circumstances.
