    A comparative evaluation of haematological and biochemical parameters of Nemipterus randalli and Pagellus erythrinus species living in Gokova Bay, Turkiye

    This study aims to determine and compare the reference values of the haematological and biochemical blood parameters of two fish species collected from the Gokova Bay (Mugla, South-Western of Turkiye): the non-native and invasive Randall's threadfin bream, Nemipterus randalli and the native Common pandora, Pagellus erythrinus. Both species inhabit the same environment and compete for resources. Blood samples were collected from a total of 100 fish samples (50 N. randalli and 50 P. erythrinus) which were caught from a depth of 30 to 60 meters between February 2023 and July 2024. Therefore, sampling could be carried out in summer and winter seasons when the water temperature varies significantly. The results indicate that red blood cell (RBC), haemoglobin (Hb) and haematocrit (Hct) levels significantly increases in summer (p < 0.05). Statistical analyses revealed that all of the haematological parameters of N. randalli are higher than the P. erythrinus (p < 0.05). In terms of serum biochemical parameters, glucose (GLU), triglyceride (TRIG), cholesterol (CHOL), total protein (TP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels of two species had showed no significant difference in both summer and winter samples (p > 0.05). However, serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels of N. randalli were statistically significant different compared to P. erythrinus in summer and winter samples (p < 0.05). Additionally, the highest lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) value was measured from N. randalli in summer sampling and this was found to be significantly different from other groups (p < 0.05). Multidimensional scaling (MDS) analysis revealed differences between the blood parameter results of N. randalli and P. erythrinus individuals. This study provides important data about the physiological adaptations of haematological and biochemical blood parameters of the two species to environmental factors. The similarity in haematological and biochemical parameters revealed the possibility that N. randalli could distribute to new habitats where P. erythrinus is distributed. This suggests a further potential distribution of the invasive N. randalli and the need for a careful monitoring.

    Acute exposure to boron in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus): Median-lethal concentration (LC50), blood parameters, DNA fragmentation of blood and sperm cells

    Recently, Boron (B) contamination of aquatic ecosystem has received considerable critical attention due to its toxic effects at high concentrations on plants as well as animals. Previous studies on toxic effects of B have not dealt with DNA damages in blood and sperm cells of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), together with blood parameters. This study consisted of two successive experiments purposes to determine these findings, including the median-lethal concentration (LC50) of B for Nile tilapia. In the first one, at 96 h, LC50 of B for Nile tilapia was 141.42 mg L-1 B. In the second one, Nile tilapia were treated with five elevated B concentrations (1, 5, 25, 50 and 100 mg L-1 B) and hematological, serum biochemical parameters, and DNA damages of Nile tilapia in these treatments were determined comparing with the control after 14 days of exposure. Hematological parameters (red blood cell count, hematocrit, and hemoglobin) were similar to each other in all groups while serum biochemical parameters (glucose, total protein, cholesterol, alkaline phosphatase, glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase, and glutamic pyruvic transaminase) in B treatments, especially in 50 and 100 mg L-1 B groups, were found significantly higher (P < 0.05). DNA fragmentation was detected in all blood cells in >= 25 mg L-1 B treatments, while all sperm cells in 100 mg L-1 B treatments. These results demonstrated the harmful effects of B at high concentration (50 and 100 mg L-1 B) on the DNA integrity of blood and sperm cells, and also the serum biochemical parameters.     Beneficial effects of Oral Allspice, Pimenta dioica powder supplementation on the hemato-immunological and serum biochemical responses of Oreochromis mossambicus

    The present study investigated the effects of dietary allspice powder supplementation on welfare status of Tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus assessed by hemato-immunological and serum biochemical parameters. Five diets were formulated to contain 0 (control), 5, 10, 15 or 20g of allspicekg(-1) of fish feed. Fish were fed experimental diets for 60days. Supplementation of allspice powder at 10gkg(-1) positively influenced the serum glucose, plasma lysozyme activity and myeloperoxidase activity. Dietary allspice powder at 15gkg(-1) also positively influenced the serum biochemical parameters (total protein, albumin and globulin) and plasma lysozyme activity. However, 20gkg(-1) allspice powder group had significantly lower values of respiratory burst activity and red blood cell count than other experimental groups (P<0.05). In conclusion, the results of the present study demonstrated that supplementation of allspice powder at 10 or 15gkg(-1) for 60days, had beneficial effects on improvement of some immunological and serum biochemical status of O. mossambicus. These findings suggest that dietary supplementation of allspice powder might further improve the resistance to fish pathogens.

    Biofloc System with Different Carbon Sources Improved Growth, Haematology, Nonspecific Immunity, and Resistivity against the Aeromonas hydrophila in Common Carp, Cyprinus carpio

    Biofloc technology (BFT) is one of the most sustainable aquaculture system, which is based on the principle of nutrient recycling and addition of carbon to enable heterotrophic microorganisms to the system. To evaluate the performance of the biofloc culture system for Cyprinus carpio fingerlings, a 60-day growth trial was conducted. The fingerlings (n = 600) of average body weight (4.92 g +/- 0.14) were stocked in 12 circular fiberglass tanks (300 L, volume 10.59 cft) to form three biofloc treatments (T1, T2, and T3) along with one control group. The carbon sources for treatments were sugarcane molasses, tapioca, and wheat. The C/N ratio of 15 was maintained for all treatments. After 60 days of rearing, the fish were challenged with Aeromonas hydrophila, and the relative percentage survival (RPS) was observed over 14 days. A haematological, nonspecific immune, and stress parameters were analyzed using blood and serum samples collected at intervals of 20, 40, and 60 days. According to the results, the carbon sources affected the water quality parameters but were still adequate for fish welfare. An increased biofloc volume was observed with tapioca. Growth performance and better feed conversion ratio were recorded in biofloc with the tapioca group. The hematological parameters, including haemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (HCT), white blood cells and lymphocytes were significantly (P <0.05) higher in biofloc-based tapioca group than in other treatments and control. Further, the serum protein, globulin, albumin, total immunoglobulin, and respiratory burst activity were also found significantly (P <0.05) higher in biofloc with tapioca as carbon source. However, the lysozyme activity was higher in biofloc with the wheat group. The RPS in tapioca was significantly higher, followed by biofloc with wheat. In conclusion, the tapioca-based biofloc can improve C. carpio growth, haematology, and nonspecific immune response under zero water exchange.

    Comparative study on haematological and biochemical parameters of two wild sparid fish species

    Different feeding habits may affect the blood parameters in fish species of the same family, even if they live in the same marine habitat. The aim of this study was to compare some haematological and biochemical parameters of two marine fish species of the same family, the saupe Sarpa salpa (Linnaeus, 1758) and the common two-banded seabream Diplodus vulgaris (Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, 1817), and to establish the similarities and differences between these species. For this purpose red blood cells (RBC), haemoglobin concentration (Hb), haematocrit (Hct), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (MCHC), glucose (GLU), triglycerides (TRIG), cholesterol (CHOL), serum total protein (TP), albumin (ALB), globulins (GLO), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) were determined for 30 fish from each species. Statistical analysis showed significant differences in some haematological and biochemical (RBC, Hb, Hct, TP, ALB, GLO, AST, ALT, ALP and LDH) parameters between the two species. Lower values of RBC, Hb and Hct were found in S. salpa in comparison with D. vulgaris. These differences could be attributed to the feeding behavior, life style and habitat adaptation of the different fish species of the same family and contribute to knowledge of reference values of blood parameters in Sarpa salpa and Diplodus vulgaris. No significant differences were found in MCV, MCH, MCHC and GLU, TRIG, CHOL.

    Dietary olive leaf (Olea europea L.) extract alters some immune gene expression levels and disease resistance to Yersinia ruckeri infection in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss

    The aim for the present study was to investigate the effects of olive leaf (Olea europea L.) extract (OLE) on the control of Yersinia ruckeri infection in rainbow (Oncorhynchus mykiss) trout and to assess the impact on the expression of immune-related genes in the spleen and serum biochemical parameters of rainbow trout. Five experimental diets were prepared by adding 0.0%, 0.1%, 0.25%, 0.50% and 1.0% of OLE. Each diet was fed to triplicate groups of fish (mean body weight 51.22 +/- 3.04 g) twice a day (at 09:00 and 17:00 h) for 60 days. The dietary supplementation of OLE did not affect growth performance and feed utilization (P > 0.05). Major changes due to graded levels of OLE in the diets were observed in blood biochemical parameters (P < 0.05). TNF alpha, IL1-beta and IL-8 gene expressions were significanity up-regulated in OLE 0.1% group compared with others (P < 0.05). Also, diet supplemented with OLE reduced mortality in rainbow trout fed with OLE 0.1% added diet. Present study suggests that OLE especially at 0.1% added feed may effectivelly enhance the serum biochemical parameters, survival rate and immune gene expression in rainbow trout.

    Dietary supplementation of olive leaf extract enhances growth performance, digestive enzyme activity and growth related genes expression in common carp Cyprinus carpio

    It is not desirable to use synthetic chemicals as growth promoters in aquaculture. Therefore, phytogenic compounds have been extensively studied in fish diets due to their growth promoter effects. Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) is widely distributed around the world and has been reared in Asia for several centuries. This study was conducted to determine the effects of olive leaf extract (OLE) (0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.50 and 1%) on the growth performance, digestive enzyme activity in the intestine and the expression levels of some growth-related genes in the brain. liver, head kidney and mucsle tissue of common carp C. carpio. At the end of the 60-day feeding period, there was a significant increase in growth performance in the OLE0.1 and OLE0.25 groups. Similar trends have been obtained for digestive enzyme activities such as a-amylase, protease and lipase. Morover, the expression of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I) was regulated by OLE supplemented by up to 0.25% in brain, liver, head kidney and muscle tissue. This study confirms that dietary OLE may enhance the growth performance of the common carp by activating the digestive enzyme activity in the intestine and increase the expression of genes (GH and IGF-I) related with growth in brain, liver, head kidneys and muscle tissue of common carp up to use 0.10% in diets.

    Dietary supplementation of olive leaf extract increases haematological, serum biochemical parameters and immune related genes expression level in common carp (Cyprinus carpio) juveniles

    The present study investigated the effects of dietary olive leaf (Olea europea L.) extract (OLE) on some blood parameters and immune (TNF-alpha, IL-1 beta and IL-8) related genes in different tissues (head kidney, liver and spleen) and resistance of common carp, Cyprinus carpio to Edwardsiella tarda. Five diets were prepared for fed fish (mean body weight 15.90 +/- 0.93 g) with different rates of OLE (0.0%, 0.1%, 0.25%, 0.50% and 1.0%). A control diet was prepared non-supplemented with OLE. Increased haematocrit ratio, serum myeloperoxidase activity, immune response gene levels (IL-1 beta in head kidney tissue and TNF-alpha in spleen tissue) and survival rate against E. tarda particularly in the 0.1% OLE treatment group. In conclusion, results of the present study show that feeding common carp with a diet containing 1 g/kg OLE over a period of 60 days might be adequate to improve fish immune parameters, and survival rate against E. tarda. Therefore, OLE can be used as a dietary additive to prevent E. tarda in common carp.

    Dose-dependent stress response of esfenvalerate insecticide on common carp (Cyprinus carpio): Evaluating blood parameters and gene expression

    Esfenvalerate is a pyrethroid insecticide used primarily in the agriculture sector for insect management. Esfenvalerate is effective against a wide range of harmful insects, including flies, cockroaches, locusts, and many other types of bugs. It is also known that esfenvalerate has toxic effects on aquatic organisms and poses significant environmental concerns. In this study, the aim is to subchronically examine the effects of sublethal concentrations of esfenvalerate insecticide on common carp (Cyprinus carpio) by assessing changes in blood parameters and resulting gene expression. For this purpose, common carp (Cyprinus carpio) were divided into 5 groups and exposed to 0.025, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15 & mu;g/L concentrations of esfenvalerate for a period of 14 days. Blood and liver tissue samples were collected from the fish that underwent weight and length measurements. The effects on gene expression levels of immune, antioxidant, and stress-related genes in the liver tissue, including SOD, GST, Cortisol receptor, HSP70, H+-ATPase, Na+/K+-ATPase, Catalase, and GpX, were evaluated, as were the hematological and serum biochemical parameters. Significant decreases were observed in the levels of hematocrit, hemoglobin, erythrocytes, triglycerides and total protein and catalase, H+-ATPase, and GpX gene expression. Glucose, cholesterol, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP), SOD, Cortisol receptor, Na+/K+-ATPase gene expression levels increased. As a result, it has been revealed that esfenvalerate insecticide causes oxidative stress in carp at all dose ranges.

    Ecotoxicological effects of polystyrene nanoplastics on common carp: Insights into blood parameters, DNA damage, and gene expression

    Plastics are ubiquitous in modern society due to their cost-effectiveness, lightweight nature, and versatility. However, their extensive use and inadequate recycling have led to a significant environmental challenge, with plastic waste accumulating rapidly and causing ecological and health problems, especially in aquatic environments. Nanoplastics, particles ranging from 1 to 100 nm, have emerged as a particularly concerning subset due to their ability to easily penetrate biological barriers and accumulate in tissues. In this study, we investigated the toxicity of carboxylate-modified polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) on common carp (Cyprinus carpio), a species often used in ecotoxicology research due to its ability to accumulate pollutants. The PS-NPs were characterized, and their effects on DNA damage gene expression related to oxidative stress and immunity were examined. PS-NPs with a diameter of 20-30 nm were found to possess a spherical shape and negatively charged surfaces. Exposure to PS-NPs led to significant DNA damage in the blood and brain cells of common carp, with higher concentrations resulting in more severe damage. Additionally, PS-NP exposure influenced the expression of genes related to antioxidative defense and stress response in the liver. Specifically, genes encoding superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) showed upregulation, while glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) exhibited downregulation at higher PS-NP concentrations. Furthermore, the immune-related genes interleukin-1 ss (IL-1 ss), interleukin-8 (IL-8), and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) displayed dose-dependent downregulation in the liver tissue. These findings suggest that exposure to PS-NPs induces oxidative stress, disrupts immune responses, and causes DNA damage in common carp. The results highlight the need for further research on the environmental impacts of PS-NPs and underscore the importance of proper waste management and recycling practices to mitigate plastic pollution. Plastics are widely used because of their affordability, versatility, and lightness. However, their inadequate recycling has led to environmental challenges, notably in aquatic ecosystems. Nanoplastics pose significant concerns due to their ability to accumulate in tissues. In this study on common carp, exposure to PS-NPs resulted in DNA damage, altered gene expression related to oxidative stress and immunity, and disrupted immune responses. These findings emphasize the urgent need for better waste management and recycling practices to combat plastic pollution.

    Effect of St. John's Worth Oil (Hypericum perforatum) on Growth Performance and Some Blood Parameters of Fry Carp (Cyprinus carpio)

    In this study, the effecs of centary oil (Hypericum perforatum) on growth performance and some blood parameters of fry common carp (Cyprinus carpio) were evaluated. For this purpose, 3 different experimental diets containing rate of 0 g/kg (SKY0), 5 g/kg (SKY5) and 10 g/kg (SKY10) centaury oil were prepared. The study consisted of 3 repetitions for each group with 3.07 +/- 0.02 g fry and in 40 L plastic tanks as 30 fish per aquarium for 60 days. At the end of the experiment, the live weight gain and specific growth rate of the fishes fed with SKY5 fed group were significantly different from the other groups (p <0.05). It was observed that centaury oil in different ratios added to the diet did not cause any difference in the amount of red blood cells, hemoglobin and hematocrit in fish (p>0.05). In serum biochemical findings of fish, St. John's Worth oil was found to be a significant difference among the groups (p<0.05). As a result of the present study, that can be suggested the centaury oil can use in common carp diets at the rate of 5 g/kg without adverse efects on growth performance, hematological and serum biochemical parameters of fish.

    Effects of a Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) Essential Oil Supplemented Diet on Haemato-Biochemical Parameters, Expression of Tissue-Specific Immune- and Stress-Related Genes, and Resistance of Cyprinus carpio to Aeromonas hydrophila Infection

    Plant-based additives or botanicals, have garnered considerable interest in the aquaculture industry for their multifaceted benefits in fish diets. In this study, a 30 days short term feeding experiment was designed to determine the effects of Myrrh (Commiphora myrrha) essential oil on hematological, biochemical parameters and tissue specific mRNA expression responses of common carp (Cyprinus carpio). Fish were experimentally infected with Aeromonas hydrophila and monitored for 20 days after been divided in four groups: a control group without C. myrrha and three experimental groups supplemented with 0.25%, 0.50%, and 1.0% C. myrrha essential oil (CMO 0.25, CMO 0.50, and CMO 1.0, respectively). Results revealed a significant increase in RBC count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit values compared to the control diet. Positive effects of C. myrra supplementation have been observed also in serum biochemistry parameters. mRNA transcripts of il-1 ss, tnf-alpha, il-8, sod, cat, gpx and gst genes significantly increased in spleen and liver tissue of fish fed with C. myrra supplemented diets. After the challenge with Aeromonas hydrophila, the survival rates were 60%, and 83.33%, respectively, suggesting enhanced fish resistance in the CMO 0.50 and CMO 1.0 groups compared to the control. The results suggest the immunomodulatory roles of C. myrrha essential oil.

    Effects of bergamot (Citrus bergamia) peel oil-supplemented diets on growth performance, haematology and serum biochemical parameters of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus)

    The present study investigated the effects of dietary Citrus bergamia peel oil (CBO) on growth performance, haematological and serum biochemical responses of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. Volatile content of C. bergamia peel oil used in study was detected with GC/MS. The 99.47% of the analysed volatile components were identified in decreasing quantities as limonene, linalool and linalyl acetate. The experimental fish were divided into four groups stocked into triplicate tanks (20 fish/tank), and fed daily with an additive-free basal diet containing 0% (CBO0), 0.5% (CBO0.5), 1.0% (CBO1), 2.0% (CBO2) of bergamot peel oil for an 8-week period. Results showed that dietary bergamot peel oil especially at 0.5 g 100 g(-1) significantly increased growth performance of fish (p < 0.05). The levels of haemoglobin and haematocrit significantly increased in fish fed with CBO0.5 and CBO1 compared with the CBO0-fed group (p < 0.05), despite no significant difference was observed in CBO2 group (p > 0.05). Highest haematocrit value was found in the CBO0.5 group compared with the control group. The serum glucose of the fish fed with CBO0.5 and CBO1 feeds decreased significantly compared with the control group (p < 0.05). The highest total protein, lowest cholesterol and triglyceride in serum were observed in fish fed with bergamot oil-supplemented groups. According to the results, it was revealed that 0.5% bergamot oil supplementation to Nile tilapia diets optimizes the growth performance, feed utilization and health status related with blood parameters of the fish.

    Effects of diet supplemented with ethanolic extract of propolis on growth performance, hematological and serum biochemical parameters and disease resistance of Mozambique tilapia (Oreochromis mossambicus) against Streptococcus iniae

    In the present study, growth performance, serum biochemical, hematological parameters and disease resistance against S. iniae in Mozambique tilapia were determined after 60-day feeding period with ethanol extract propolis supplemented diets. Growth performance increased (P < 0.05) in 2 and 4 g kg(-1.) propolis supplemented groups. There were no changes in hematological values between all treatment groups (P > 0.05). Total protein, values in serum found significantly higher in P-2 group (9.31 +/- 0.66 g dL(-1)) compared to the P-0 (7.49 +/- 1.66 g dL(-1)). The highest serum cholesterol value was obtained in P-4 (206.76 +/- 24.57 mg dL(-1)) group and found significantly different from P-0 (169.79 +/- 17.11 mg dL(-1)). The lactate dehydrogenase, lysozyme and myeloperoxidase activity significantly increased in P-1, P-2, P-4 and P-8 groups. The highest lysozyme and myeloperoxidase activity values were obtained in P-2 and P-4 groups (for lysozyme 255.44 +/- 3.41 mg L-1, 260.55 +/- 4.29 mg L-1 and for myeloperoxidase 145.01 +/- 3.82 U L-1 151.35 +/- 4.17 U L-1 respectively) and found significantly different from P-0 group. Propolis supplementation to the diets showed no differences on other serum biochemical parameters such as glucose, triglyceride, glutamic pyrivic transaminase and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase. After challenge with S. iniae, fish fed with 2 and 4 g kg(-1) propolis showed significant survival rates (72.55% and 68.63%, respectively) compared with other groups. This study indicates that growth performance and non-specific immune response of Mozambique tilapia can be enhanced by dietary supplementation with propolis and that the optimal level would be 2 g kg(-1).

    Effects of dietary allspice, Pimenta dioica powder on physiological responses of Oreochromis mossambicus under low pH stress

    This study investigated the effects of the supplementation with allspice (0, 5, 10, 15, or 20 g kg(-1)) on the haemato-immunological and biochemical variables in tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus under acidic stress condition. In a 60-day feeding trial, 15 aquariums (80-L) were stocked with 18 fish (20.05 +/- 0.10 g) each. Then, acidic stress was achieved by exposing the sampled fish to acidic water (pH 5.5) for 3 days. Allspice supplementation influenced the haematological indices, serum glucose, protein, globulin and innate immune parameters such as respiratory burst activity, lysozyme, and myeloperoxidase activities. In general, at acidic pH decreased circulating red blood cell numbers (RBC), increased mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and the innate immune parameters were observed. On the other hand, the inclusion of allspice prevented an increase in blood glucose MCV and MCH, decreases in albumin, RBC, lysozyme activity and respiratory burst avtivity. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that allspice supplementation at 10 g kg(-1) for 60 days, has adequate beneficial effects on improvement of haemato-immunological and biochemical status of O. mossambicus after stressful management.

    Effects of dietary Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) peel oil on growth, haematology and immune response of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) juveniles

    The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of essential oil extracted from bergamot (Citrus bergamia) peel on growth performance and health status of European sea bass juveniles (5.10 + 0.05 g). Test diets supplemented with 0.0%, 0.5%, 1.0% and 2.0% bergamot peel oil (BPO0, BPO0.5, BPO1 and BPO2) were fed to experimental fish for 60 days. At the end of the experiment, the best growth performance was obtained in the BPO0.5 and BPO1 groups (p < .05). No significances were found for haematological parameters including red blood cell count, haematocrit and haemoglobin concentration at the end of the feeding experiment. There were significant differences between the total protein, cholesterol, alkaline phosphatase and glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (p < .05) between the BPO0.5 and BPO1 supplemented groups and the control group with no BPO addition. The addition of BPO showed significant differences in immune parameters such as lysozyme activity, total myeloperoxidase content, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase activity between BPO0 and BPO supplemented groups (p < .05). It might be concluded that dietary addition of 0.5%-1% BPO could increase the growth performance and feed utilization with improved health status in sea bass juveniles.

    Effects of Dietary Tribulus terrestris Extract Supplementation on Growth, Feed Utilization, Hematological, Immunological, and Biochemical Variables of Nile Tilapia Oreochromis niloticus

    The present study was conducted for 88 days to evaluate the effect of dietary Tribulus terrestris supplementation on growth performance, feed utilization, and hematological, immunological, and biochemical indices of Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus. A total of 144 Nile tilapia, average body weight 2.61 +/- 0.35 g, were divided into four experimental treatments. There were three replicates of each treatment. Four isonitrogenous (40% CP) and isolipidic (10% CL) experimental diets contained T. terrestris extract at levels of 0, 200, 400 and 600 mg/kg respectively. Growth performance and feed utilization of Nile tilapia were significantly higher (p<0.05) in all treatment groups fed with T. terrestris extract supplemented diets than those fed the control diet. There were no significant differences between body composition of fish (p>0.05). Hematocrit, hemoglobin, mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), and myeloperoxidase variables were not significantly affected by herb extract (p>0.05). However, mean corpuscular volume (MCV) value and lysozyme activity increased with increasing T. terrestris extract (p<0.05). Serum albumin, total protein, and triglyceride levels were not affected by T. terrestris extract. Serum globulin and glucose levels increased and cholesterol levels decreased in Nile tilapia fed with herbal supplemented diets. The results of the present study suggest that Nile tilapia fed diets containing at least 400 mg/kg T. terrestris extract enhanced growth performance, feed utilization, hematological, immunological, and biochemical indices.

    Effects of Different Levels of Pomegranate Seed Oil on Some Blood Parameters and Disease Resistance Against Yersinia ruckeri in Rainbow Trout

    This study is aimed to assess the effects of pomegranate seed oil (PSO) supplementation on growth performance, some hematological, biochemical and immunological parameters, and disease resistance against Yersinia ruckeri in cultured rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss (Walbaum, 1792). 240 fish in total were randomly assigned into four triplicate groups (20 fish/per aquarium) corresponding to four dietary treatments: control (PSOo; no addition of PSO), 0.5% (PSO5), 1.00% (PSO10), and 2.00% (PSO20 ) of PSO, respectively. After the 60 day-feeding trial, fish blood samples were collected and compared. Statistical analysis (one-way ANOVA) showed a significant (P < 0.05) effect of PSO on red blood cell count, hemoglobin concentration, mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration, cholesterol, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, and alkaline phosphatase parameters in PSO5 and PSO10 with regard to control. Moreover, a pronounced (P < 0.05) increased in weight gain, growth and feed conversion was found in fish fed with PSO supplemented diets. After the feeding trial, fish were challenged with Y ruckeri and survival recorded for 20 days. Cumulative survival was 45.10% in fish fed with the control diet, whereas in fish fed with PSO5, PSO10 , and PSO20 supplemented diets, survival was 58.82, 56.86, and 56.86%, respectively. In conclusion, dietary administration of PSO induced a reduction in mortality of rainbow trout infected with Y ruckeri, intercalary significant differences occurred on growth performance and some blood values among treated groups. These positive effects of PSO could be considered for new applications in aquaculture.

    EFFECTS OF MONTEREY CYPRESS (CUPRESSUS MACROCARPA HARTW) LEAF ESSENTIAL OIL AS A DIETARY SUPPLEMENT ON GROWTH PERFORMANCE AND HAEMATOLOGICAL AND BIOCHEMICAL PARAMETERS OF COMMON CARP (CYPRINUS CARPIO L.)

    Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) is the most fanned freshwater fish worldwide. In recent years, use of natural products in fish diets has become popular in aquaculture, to improve fish health and growth performance. The present study investigated the effects of essential oil from the leaves of Monterey cypress (Cupressus macrocarpa; CMEO) on growth performance and blood parameters in common carp fingerlings. Identification of 96.1% of the CMEO total volatile components was achieved, with the highest contents for terpinen-4-ol and alpha-pinene, at 22.9% and 47.7%, respectively. After 60 days of feeding of the fingerlings with supplemented diets without CMEO (CMEO 0%) and with CMEO at 0.5%, 0.75% and 1%, the best growth performance was seen for those fish fed with the CMEO 0.5% diet. No significant differences were seen for the haematological parameters and blood cell indices versus CMEO 0%. Serum glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol and glutamic pyruvie transaminase were significantly reduced in the fingerlings fed with the CMEO 0.5% diet versus CMEO 0%. Thus, CMEO oil as a 0.5% dietary supplement can be used to improve the growth performance and health status of the common carp without any adverse effects seen.

    Effects of Partial or Total Replacement of Fish Oil by Unrefined Peanut Oil on Growth and Chemical Composition of Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio)

    Unrefined peanut oil was evaluated as a partial or total replacement of fish oil in diets for common carp (Cyprinus carpio) and growth performance, feed utilization, and biochemical status were examined. Three isonitrogenous (34.5% protein) and isolipidic (12.8% lipid) experimental diets were fed to satiation to triplicate groups of 10 common carp (29.57 +/- 0.44 g), each, for 60 days. At the end of the experiment, total replacement of the fish oil by peanut oil did not affect growth, feed utilization, or ash, protein, or moisture content in the carp body. Hepatosomatic and viscerasomatic indices increased as the content of peanut oil increased but did not significantly differ between treatments (p<0.05). Serum total protein, globulin, and triglyceride significantly increased as the content of peanut oil increased while glucose decreased. There was no definable trend in cholersterol. In conclusion, replacement of 50% dietary fish oil with unrefined peanut oil had no adverse effect on the growth performance, biochemical parameters, or general health (survival) of common carps.
