A Contribution on the Diet of the Warty Crab, Eriphia verrucosa (Forskal, 1775) by Informative Bayesian Stable Isotope Mixing Models
(Maik Nauka/Interperiodica/Springer, 2022) Acar, Seçil; Ertürk Gürkan, Selin; Ateş, A. Suat; Yalçın Özdilek, Şükran
The present study aims to determine the diet composition of Eriphia verrucosa using an informative and uninformative approach in which the stomach content results were assigned as prior based on this model. A stable isotope mixing model and stomach content analysis were used together to determine the diet and prey-predator relationships of E. verrucosa. A total of 24 crabs and benthic material were collected from depths between 1.5 and 2 m in the Strait of canakkale in July, 2020. The contribution of two different diets was assessed both by prior assignment (informative) and uninformative. According to the stomach content analyses, among the prey, Echinodermata contributed 37% to the diet, followed by Mollusca, especially Gastropoda (18%). In the uninformative model without prior assignment and in the informative model (prior assignment), Gastropoda contributed the most to the diet (57, 66%, respectively).

Assessment of physical carrying capacity of a mariculture zone designated in the Aegean Sea
(Springer, 2024) Yiğit, Murat; Ergün, Sebahattin; Büyükateş, Yeşim; Ateş, Abdullah Suat; Özdilek, H. Göksel; Acar, Seçil
The present study was conducted to evaluate the physical carrying capacity in a mariculture zone designated for cage aquaculture in the Aegean Sea (Mersin Bay, Izmir, Turkiye). Rapid assessment of carrying capacity for the approval of new investments or capacity increase requests environment-regulated timely management procedures for the sustainable development of the drastically growing cage aquaculture industry in the Mediterranean. Hence, the mathematical estimations earlier developed for the Mediterranean area have been applied for the carrying capacity assessment using the data gathered from eight fish farms operating in the area. The data collected from the farms comprised the information such as current granted production level, surface area, location depth, current speed, shore distance, and coordinates of the farm sites. The results obtained showed an estimated carrying capacity for the investigated mariculture zone as 252,852 tons which is about 18 times the current production level of 13,500 tons that was granted in total for the sum of eight cage farms in the region with a total of 50.89-ha surface area. It can be concluded that, with the condition of periodic environmental monitoring to keep the marine ecosystem below eutrophication risk, the production capacity of farms in the designated mariculture zone, comprising a surface area of 50.89 ha, could be increased by 18-fold over the present production level, which is far below the risk threshold. The findings of this study provide important support for decision-makers in the management of intensive cage aquaculture operations in the Mediterranean region.

Epibionts of mediterranean green crab, Carcinus aestuarii Nardo, 1847 in Canakkale Strait: Based on seasonal, sexual and color variation
    (Springer, 2024) Acar, Seçil
Carcinus aestuarii is representative of lagoons and is currently defined as a cosmopolitan species across different geographical regions. The objective of this study was to ascertain the species composition, prevalence, density, sex, and seasonal distribution of epibionts hosted by C. aestuarii in the Canakkale Strait. Samples of C. aestuarii were collected seasonally in Cardak Lagoon (Canakkale Strait) summer, autumn, winter, and spring using a static traditional eel trap. It was observed that the crabs were extensively colonized with bivalves, barnacles, polychaetes, and amphipods, and carried epibionts in the carapace and abdominal region. Additionally, it was observed that males exhibited a greater prevalence of epibionts than females, and that the epibiont load on the crab increased during the winter season. This study reports the first recorded instance of Anomia sp. and Sacculina carcini on C. aestuarii. The study on the invasion of the green crab is of significant importance to gain insight into the behavior, dispersal patterns, and impacts of the species. The knowledge presented here may then be utilized in the development of strategies for the management and control of invasive species, thereby contributing to the conservation of ecosystems and the maintenance of biodiversity.

Evaluation of isotopic signature of mucilage in the benthic food web in the Çanakkale Strait
(Universitatea din Oradea, 2022) Gürkan, Selin Ertürk; Acar, Seçil; Gürkan, Mert; Özdilek, Şükran Yalçin
The mucilage formation, which emerged in the Marmara Sea in November 2020, was soon seen in the Çanakkale Strait and became effective in different locations of the strait in a short time. In this study, the place of mucilage in the food web as a food source and the percentage of mucilage in the food web of warty crab (Eriphia verrucosa), which is a benthic species, was determined by the stable isotope method. For this purpose, E. verrucosa was sampled from a mucilage-affected area of the Çanakkale Strait in July 2021. In addition, sediment samples were collected to sort out macrophyte samples and macroinvertebrate samples, which could be possible food sources of the species. Finally, the pelagic and benthic mucilage samples were also taken and brought to the laboratory in the cold chain. The stable isotope analyses of all samples were made and evaluated. The results showed that mucilage from both layers joined the food web and that benthic mucilage, in particular, contributed to the diet of a benthic species, E. verrucosa. The possible contribution of mucilage, which has been determined to be included in the diet of benthic organisms with its high bacterial density, is also a concern for the diet of fish species that are consumed more frequently by humans. © 2022 Universitatea din Oradea. Evaluation of the health of Mediterranean mussels ( Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck, 1819) distributed in the Çanakkale strait, Turkey
(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2024) Gürkan, Mert; Ertürk Gürkan, Selin; Künili, İbrahim Ender; Acar, Seçil; Özel, Osman Tolga; Düzgüneş, Zehra Duygu; Türe, Mustafa
The observation of mortality in Mediterranean mussels ( Mytilus galloprovincialis ) distributed in the Çanakkale Strait in recent years was influential in developing the research question for this study. In this study, the presence of bacteria ( Vibrio spp.) and parasites ( Marteilia spp. and Haplosporidium spp.) in mussels collected from Kumkale, Kepez, and Umurbey stations in the Çanakkale Strait was investigated seasonally. Microbiological findings, histopathology, oxidative stress enzymes and their gene expressions, lipid peroxidation, lysosomal membrane stability, and changes in haemolymph were examined. In summer samples, both the defence system and the extent of damage were higher in gill tissue. In winter samples, enzyme activities and lipid peroxidation were found to be predominantly higher in digestive gland tissues. Histological examinations and Hemacolor staining revealed the presence of protozoan cysts, and for bacterial examination, molecular analysis performed after culturing revealed the presence of 7 Vibrio species. While the total numbers of heterotrophic bacteria detected in all samples were at acceptable levels, the predominance of Vibrio spp. numbers among the total heterotrophic bacteria detected in almost all samples were noteworthy. The total hemocyte count was calculated as 5.810(4) +/- 0.58 (cells/mm 3 ) in winter and 7.210(4) +/- 1.03 (cells/mm 3 ) in summer. These factors are considered to be possible causes of mussel mortality.

Exotic Polychaetes of a Sewage Pollution Influenced Lagoon (cardak Lagoon, Turkish Straits)
(MDPI, 2023) Dağlı, Ertan; Ateş, Abdullah Suat; Acar, Seçil; Büyükateş, Yeşim; Dogan, Alper; Bakır, Ahmet Kerem
This paper includes three exotic polychaeta species, Hydroides dianthus (Verrill, 1873), Polydora cornuta Bosc, 1802, and Pseudopolydora paucibranchiata (Okuda, 1937), found during benthic samplings in Çardak Lagoon (Turkish Straits). The sampling was collected from the sandy and silty bottoms known to be polluted by sewage discharges. A total of 45 specimens of exotic polychaetes (H. dianthus: 1; P. cornuta: 4; P. paucibranchiata: 40) were found. The correlation values between the annual average values of the nutrients and the polychaeta abundance showed that the highest positive relationships with the abundance were between sand content, total phosphate, and pH. P. cornuta was the most observed species with a frequency index value of 75%, while H. dianthus was represented with a single species in the study area. Albeit the previous studies, P. paucibranchiata was observed most abundantly in the sampling station having low organic matter amounts. The study showed that opportunistic polychaetes observed in Çardak Lagoon mostly preferred organically poor sediments.

First observation of the zebra mussel (Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas, 1771)) on the narrow-clawed crayfish inhabiting in some water sources of Turkey
(Ege Üniversitesi, 2018) Berber, Selçuk; Ateş, Abdullah Suat; Acar, Seçil
The zebra mussel, Dreissena polymorpha (Pallas, 1771) is considered as a harmful invasive epibiont species for hydroelectric and nuclear power plants as it reduces or blocks water flow in the plant systems. Although D. polymorpha is reported that it cleans the water, increases water visibility, and filters out pollutants, it has likewise negative impacts on the population and size of some fish and aquatic species. In the present study, zebra mussels were observed for the first time. On the narrow-clawed crayfish living in some water sources in Turkey. Specimens were collected from two natural lakes (Cildir Lake, Egirdir Lake) and five ponds (Altinyazi Dam Lake, Keban Dam Lake, Kucukcekmece Lake, Karpuzlu Dam Lake, Kadikoy Dam Lake) in Turkey. Attachments of the zebra mussel to the different body parts of the narrow-clawed crayfish were documented in the present study. Cochran's Q test results showed that the numbers of mussels clinging to the different parts of the crayfish varied (P=0.000) (P < 0.001). The difference between the holding regions of zebra mussels on crayfish specimens may cause some adverse effects on the host. Particularly the intensive grip on the carapace partially obstruct the movement, feeding, mating, avoiding predators, and shelter. mussel individuals in the pleopodal region may have difficulty holding and transporting eggs. This study is the first report about the occurrence of D. polymorpha on Astacus leptodactylus in Turkish waters.

New species of freshwater molluscs from Gokceada (northeastern Aegean Sea), Turkey (Gastropoda: Hydrobiidae, Bythinellidae)
(E Schweizerbartsche Verlagsbuchhandlung, 2019) Odabaşı, Serpil; Odabaşı, Deniz Anıl; Acar, Seçil
For centuries, scientists have been inspired by island ecosystems in terms of their biodiversity and physical environment. Because freshwater and terrestrial ecosystems of the Aegean Islands have undergone processes of formation and geographical isolation differentiating them from the adjacent mainland, they have attracted many scientists. Although several papers describing the freshwater molluscs of these islands have been published, there is no such study about the Turkish islands of Gokceada and Bozcaada located in the northern Aegean Sea. This study describes the diversity of the freshwater mollusc fauna of Gokceada. Sampling of freshwater snails by kick-net and hand-collection was carried out throughout the island, covering diverse habitats including fountains, streams, and artificial ponds. The findings include the first records of Dreissena polymorpha and Pisidium subtruncatum from Gokceada and the invasive gastropod Physella acuta. Furthermore, we present descriptions of the anatomy and shells of four new species of freshwater snails: Pseudamnicola cirikorum sp. n., Pseudamnicola radeae sp. n., Grossuana kayrae sp. n., and Bythinella gokceadaensis sp. n. We compare these new species (except G. kayrae sp. n.) with previously described congeners from the Sporades, mainland Greece, and western Turkey. Because Grossuana had previously not been recorded from Turkey, G. kayrae is compared with Greek and Balkan (southwestern Thrace) Grossuana species.

Restricted effects of climate change on annual streamflow of Sarıçay stream (Çanakkale, Turkey)
(2016) Kale, Semih; Ejder, Tuba; Acar, Seçil; Hisar, Olcay; Mutlu, Fatih
The global warming and the associated climate change lead to significant problems related to sustainability of natural resources. The observations and research on this issue have shown that most of the water resources have been affected by this phenomenon. These effects of global warming on water resources can be listed as decreased amount of water and droughts in mid-latitude belt. In the current study the changes in the flows of Sarıçay stream in Çanakkale and the time series of the climate parameters related to the region were determined and trends of these variations were estimated. A 34-years data set regarding the river flows between 1978 and 2011 as well as some annual climate parameters such as temperature, evaporation and precipitation have been collected by three meteorological observation stations (Bozcaada, Gökçeada, Çanakkale) for 43 years were used. Pettitt change-point analysis was used to determine the change points for streamflow and climatic parameters. Box-Jenkins method and the ARIMA model were used for trend analyses. Results showed that there was a decrease in precipitation and streamflow on the contrary an increase in evaporation and temperature. However, these changes were statistically insignificant (P > 0.05). In conclusion, climate change effects on river streamflow could be unstable and many factors such as latitudinal location, anthropogenic effects, agricultural activities, population density and residential areas could affect the streamflow.
