Investigating parental involvement at beginning of elementary school

Abstract

There are many studies conducted in order to make the education given in the schools more efficient and wholly achieve the certain targets. When discussing students’ education as a whole, there are many factors having an effect on the students’ success apart from the education given at schools. The families also have an active part in these factors. Families involved in the education process of their children not only help themselves but also help their children and the educational institutions to be developed in a positive way. In this study, it is aimed to determine the level of parent involvement in their children educational process and to analyze these levels in terms of different variables. Working group of the study consisted of 211 mothers and 91 fathers whose child is a first grade student. Parents’ levels of involving in home-based, school-based and school-family cooperation based activities were determined. "Family Involvement Scale" was applied to the parents participated in the study. As a result, the involvement level of parents was often in the medium level, the mothers involved in the activities much more by comparison with the fathers, working parents showed more interest involving in the activities at school and in the classroom as comparing with the nonemployees. Besides, it was found out that 30-42 year old parents were more concerned with their children's education at home by comparison with 43 year old and older parents. Furthermore, parents’ income monthly income was a predictor of their family involvement. However, their educational status was determined as having no effect on family involvement.

Okullarda verilen eğitimin daha verimli hale gelmesi, belirlenen hedeflere tam olarak ulaşılabilmesi adına alan yazında birçok araştırma yapılmıştır. Öğrencilerin eğitim durumları bir bütün olarak ele alındığında okulda verilen eğitimin dışında başarılı olmalarında etkisi bulunan birçok faktörün olduğu, ailenin de bu faktörler içerisinde etkin bir yere sahip olduğu görülmektedir. Çocuğunun eğitim sürecine dâhil olan aileler hem kendilerinde hem çocuklarında hem de eğitim kurumlarında olumlu gelişmelerin olmasına yardımcı olmaktadır. Bu çalışmada ailelerin çocuklarının eğitim süreçlerine katılma düzeylerinin belirlenmesi ve bu katılma düzeylerinin farklı değişkenlere göre analiz edilmesi amaçlanmaktadır. Velilerin aile temelli, okul temelli ve okul-aile işbirliği temelli etkinliklere katılım düzeylerinin belirlenmesi hedeflenmiştir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu çocuğu ilkokul 1. Sınıfta eğitim alan 211 anne ve 91 baba oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmaya katılan velilere “Aile Katılım Ölçeği” uygulanmıştır. Araştırmanın sonucunda velilerin aile katılımlarının çoğunlukla orta düzeyde olduğu, annelerin babalara göre aile katılımında daha çok yer aldıkları, çalışmayan velilerin çalışan velilere göre okulda ve sınıfta yapılan etkinliklere daha çok katıldıkları, 30-42 yaş arası velilerin 43 yaş üstü velilere göre evde çocuklarının eğitimiyle daha çok ilgilendikleri görülmüştür. Ayrıca velilerin gelir düzeyinin aile katılımına etki ettiği tespit edilmiştir. Ancak velilerin eğitim durumlarının aile katılımına herhangi bir etkisinin olmadığı belirlenmiştir
