dc.description.abstractMarina Carr'ın The Mai (1995), Portia Coughlan (1996) ve By the Bog of Cats... (1998) oyunları, bireysel, kuşaklar arası ve kültürel bellekten etkilenen travmaya maruz kalmış kadın karakterlerin kimlik oluşum süreçlerine ışık tutmaktadır. Midlands üçlemesi, çağdaş İrlanda toplumundaki kültürel dönüşüme odaklanmakla birlikte, ana karakterlerin (The Mai, Portia Coughlan ve Hester Swane) geçmişle olan bağlarının ve kültürel belleğin mevcut kimlikleri üzerindeki etkisine hontolojik bir bakış açısı sunmaktadır. Bu tezde, bellek, İrlandalılık ve spektralite kavramlarının Midlands üçlemesinde teknik ve tematik açıdan nasıl ele alındığı Dominick LaCapra'nın travma ve Jacques Derrida'nın hontoloji kuramları ışığında incelenmektedir. Bu kuramlar kapsamında incelenen oyunlar, yabancılaşma temasına ek olarak çağdaş İrlanda toplumunda geleneklere meydan okuyan kadın karakterleri de temsil etmektedirler. İrlanda kültüründe bireysel, kuşaklar arası ve kültürel belleğin kadın kimliğinin oluşumuna etkileri göz önünde bulundurulduğunda, bu tezde incelenen her bir tiyatro eseri, hatırlama, yeniden inşa etme, ve uzlaşmanın gerçekleştiği spektral bir alan oluşturmaktadır. Bu tez, çağdaş İrlanda kadın kimliğinin kültürel bellekle bağlantısını ve geçmişin hayaletlerinin şimdiki an ve gelecek üzerindeki tahakkümünü travma kavramına hontolojik bir bakış açısıyla incelemeyi hedeflemektedir.
dc.description.abstractMarina Carr's The Mai (1995), Portia Coughlan (1996), and By the Bog of Cats... (1998) provide an insight into the formation of contemporary Irish female identity through their representations of traumatised female characters haunted by their individual, trans-generational, and cultural memories. In general, Marina Carr's Midlands trilogy deserves a critical attention in terms of not only representing the cultural transformation in contemporary Irish culture but also creating a hauntological site of remembering and reconstruction in which The Mai, Portia Coughlan, and Hester Swane reconstruct their identities. In line with Dominick LaCapra and Jacques Derrida's theoretical stances, each chapter examines Marina Carr's exploration of memory, Irishness and spectrality, analysing both the form and the content of the selected plays. Carr's plays under scrutiny by the lens of these theories employ themes of displacement and alienation through the defiant representations of female characters who are self-destructively traumatised and haunted. Each theatrical work analysed in this thesis becomes a spectral site of remembering, reconstruction, and renegotiation concerning personal, familial, and cultural memories within the context of Irish culture. Thus, this thesis aims to establish a hauntological approach to trauma to explore how contemporary Irish female identity is reconstructed by mnemonic and spectral effects of individual, trans-generational, and cultural trauma as represented in Marina Carr's Midlands trilogy.
