(Sage Publications Ltd, 2023) Bülbül, Elif; Ayvaz, Meryem Yıldız; Yeni, Tuğba; Turen, Sevda; Efil, Sevda
Background: Arteriovenous fistula-related self-care behaviors, self-care agency and health literacy are important for vascular access patency, which is vital in the continuation of hemodialysis treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine the arteriovenous fistula-related self-care behaviors of patients receiving chronic hemodialysis treatment and the relationship between these behaviors and their health literacy and self-care agency levels. Methods: In this descriptive correlational study, the data were collected from 216 chronic hemodialysis patients. Results: The rate of the patients who had good self-care behaviors levels was 83.96%. The sociodemographic variables that were significantly related to AVF-related self-care behaviors were education, employment status and age. It was found that the patients who had had AVF for a longer time had better self-care behaviors regarding their management of symptoms and findings (p < 0.05). As the self-care agency of the patients (r = 0.612, p < 0.001) and their health literacy (r = 0.421, p < 0.001) increased, their AVF-related self-care behaviors also increased. Conclusion: Age, education status, health literacy and self-care agency were identified to affect AVF-related self-care behaviors.

(Elsevier Sci Ltd, 2022) Efil, Sevda; Turen, Sevda; Ayvaz, Meryem Yildiz; Bulbul, Elif; Yeni, Tugba
Objective: To examine the relation between burnout levels and caring behaviours in intensive care nurses in Turkey, and the affecting factors. Research methodology/design: The research was conducted as a descriptive, cross-sectional and multi-centred study. Setting: In this study, an online questionnaire was applied in April and May 2021, using Google Form. A total of 460 intensive vare nurses responded to the questionnaire. Main outcome measures: Burnout was assessed with the Maslach Burnout Inventory, and care behaviours with the Caring Behaviours Inventory-24. Results: The nurses reported a high level of emotional exhaustion (73.9%) and depersonalization (52.2%), and a medium level of personal accomplishment (40%). The nurses' levels of perception of care quality were high (5.4 +/- 0.6). It was found that their highest score on the subdimensions was on knowledge and skills (5.6 +/- 0.5), and the lowest was on connectedness (5.2 +/- 0.7). There was a very weak, respectively weak correlation, between nurses' emotional exhaustion (r = -0.1), respectively depersonalization (r = -0.2), and poor care behaviours. There was a strong correlation between low personal accomplishment scores and poor care behaviours (r = 0.8). It was found that the mean scores of the nurses' exhaustion and care behaviours varied according to many descriptive characteristics, such as education, age, professional experience, the unit where they worked, communication difficulties, living conditions and whether they had chosen nursing willingly. Conclusions: It appears that the level of personal accomplishment, is the only subscale reflecting risk of burnout, that strongly correlates with care behaviour.

Compassion, stress and coping strategies in family caregivers of patients with heart failure
(Mosby-Elsevier, 2024) Kalkan Uğurlu, Yasemin; Akaca Doğan, Derya; Efil, Sevda; Çelik Çaka, Hatice
The requirements of caring for individuals with diseases with excess care burden like heart failure (HF) comprise a source of stress for the caregiver. This situation affects the health of caregivers and may cause a reduction in their level of compassion. However, compassion is associated with psychological benefits and coping strategies like positive mood in caregivers. The aim of this study was to investigate the correlations between compassion, coping strategies and stress levels of family members caring for individuals with HF. We found that the dysfunctional coping strategies were determined to play a partial mediating role in the relationship between caregiver compassion levels and stress levels. Caregivers with higher compassion levels reported lower stress levels. This situation may be linked to their use of relatively fewer dysfunctional coping strategies. Findings help to examine the correlations between compassion, coping strategies and stress levels of family members caring for individuals with HF.

Social vulnerability and medication adherence in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
(Publishing Office of the University of Rzeszow, 2024) Efil, Sevda; Bükrük, Ceren Mina; Özen, Ebru
Introduction and aim. The association between social vulnerability and medication adherence in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is unclear. The aim of this study was to show the correlation of social vulnerability and medication adherence in individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Material and methods. Data collection was conducted by face to face interview in November 2022 and May 2023. Social vulnerability and medication adherence were evaluated using the Social Vulnerability Scale and the Medication Adherence Report Scale respectively. Results. The mean scores of individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease for social vulnerability and medication adherence were 20.02±6.69 and 22.76±3.29 respectively. Levels of social vulnerability varied according to comorbidity, hypertension, heart failure, visit to emergency service in the last three months due to COPD exacerbation, and using herbal products instead of medication (p<0.05). Mean scores for medication adherence were lower in women, never smokers, and those who used herbal products instead of medication (p<0.05). Conclusions. Having a higher level of social vulnerability is associated with worse medication adherence (r=-0.31, p<0.01). Individuals using herbal products are found to be at risk for social vulnerability and non-adherence to medication (p<0.05).

The correlation between nursing students’ levels of fear and stress related to the COVID-19 pandemic and their compliance with standard precautions
(Publishing Office of the University of Rzeszow, 2023) Kurt, Fatma Yilmaz; Alankaya, Naile; Atay, Selma; Efil, Sevda
Introduction and aim. University students have been demonstrated in the literature to be a group particularly vulnerable to mental health problems during the COVID-19 pandemic. The aim of this study was to examine the correlation between the fear and anxiety levels of nursing students regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and their compliance with standard precautions. Material and methods. The sample consisted of 509 volunteer students. Data were collected using a Personal Information Form, the Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCV-19S), the COVID-19 Anxiety Scale (CAS) and the Compliance with Standard Precautions Scale (CSPS). Results. The FCV-19S, CAS, and CSPS mean scores of the students were respectively 17.49±5.24 1.99±3.54 and 13.46±3.61. There was a moderate correlation (p<0.05) between the FCV-19S and CAS of the students, but no correlation was detected between CSPS and FCV-19S (p>0.05) and CAS (p>0.05). Conclusion. It was determined that students had a moderate fear of COVID-19 and a low level of anxiety over COVID-19. However, fear of COVID-19 and COVID-19 anxiety levels were not correlated with compliance with standard precautions. © 2023 Authors. All rights reserved.

(Yoğun Bakım Hemşireler Derneği, 2024) Temel, Gül; Efil, Sevda
Objective: This study aims to investigate the relationship between perceived spouse support, and medication adherence, diet, and fluid restriction as well as the factors influencing this relationship in hemodialysis patients. Methods: The research was conducted between November 2021, and January 2022 at a university hospital's hemodialysis unit. A total of 271 participants were included in the study. Data were collected using the "Patient Identification Form," "Spouse Support Scale," "Fluid Control Scale in Hemodialysis Patients," "Dialysis Diet, and Fluid Nonadherence Questionnaire,", and "Medication Adherence Report Scale." A total of 271 participants were included in the study. Results: Participants' mean scores for perceived spouse support, fluid control, dialysis diet, and fluid restriction nonadherence, and medication adherence were 57.64±20.14, 56.82±13.55, 16.91±10.31, and 16.56±6.18 respectively. The relationship between perceived spouse support mean score, and fluid control (r=0.99), and medication adherence (r=0.99) was in the direction positive, while the relationship with dialysis diet, and fluid restriction nonadherence (r=-0.91) was very strong in the direction negative (p<0.01). Conclusion: Know potential factors influencing perceived spouse support in hemodialysis patients may provide an opportunity to identify appropriate strategies to enhance adherence to medication, fluid control, dialysis diet, and fluid restriction
