The presidential system, although its origins lies in European political thought, is an original political system. Some of the distinctive characteristics of the presidential system are the election of president directly by people, the division of power between president and parliament which depends on the balance and control of each other, and the authority of president for having the administration power. The problem for who tries to find a relationship between the political system and democracy is to diagnose the effect of the political system on the maturity of democracy. The focus of this study is the relationship between the presidential system and democracy. In the first section, the historical background of the presidential system is explained. In the second section, the institutional structure of the presidential system is examined. In the third section, some of the connections which can be constructed between the presidential system and the theory of democracy are argued, and the problems which the presidential system has for building a democratic system are discussed.
